Q1           Beforewindow screens were invented in 1840, were people able to
keep flies out oftheir buildings? If so, how? Are people able to do it now who
don't have windowscreens, and how?

A1           Jay Snead Updated Oct23

Most people couldn't keep insects out of the house. Those that triedwould use
thin, looselywoven cheesecloth fabric that would let some air and light
through,but keep the bugs out.

But, compared to later metal screens, the cloth netting was flimsy andsubject
to wind and object damage and mildew.

Usually it was easier and cheaper to use a fly cloth to cover food ontables to
keep flies off and to use mosquito netting over the beds.

Q3         Whena guest leaves your home, do you stand outside your house until
they leave?

A3         Bhuvana Rameshwarmarried for three decades Fri

It depends onthe guest…for me the relationship with the guest matters more
thancultural norms or social etiquettes.

There are some I send off at the main door of the house,

some I send with small gifts, flowers, fruits, sweets, chocolates, toys, books
for children Kumkum, turmeric, a blouse piece or even a sari ,

some I go up to the lift to send off. We stay in the 4th floor.

Some I send off inthe lift but rush down the stairs to meet them in the ground
floor and bid goodbye . Our apartment lift can comfortably accommodate 4 adults.

Others I go right up to their car in the parking lot.

Once in while we send off people like relatives even upto therailway station or
airport.

And the last are the ones we wait to see them off until their car takesa right
or left turn onto the main road from our colony roads.

Yes, it depends onmy equations with the guests. One rule doesn't fit all or
rather alldon't deserve the same good send off.

My note-Practically sending guests following up to railway station is very much
reduced now.

Q4         Whenpeople say they take a cold shower, how cold is cold? What
degrees of watertemperature are we defining as cold?

A4         Tom Polic, Worker atFood (2000-present)Answered May 25, 2020

There's no exact temperature because that will vary on how high yourbody
temperature is. Acold shower would be when the water you're showering with is
colder than yourbody temperature.

If it feels that iscooling you down it is a cold shower. That's all to it. .

In places where is hot for example even warm water can feel cold. andin cold
places like north pole for example, the water that you would usuallydescribe as
cold can feel warm. .

So if your body temperature is less than the water temperature thewater will
feel warm and vice versa.

I would say 35 C°and under would be what we consider cold water when it comes
to showering. Not so much when it comes to drinking. Again depends from person
to person howcold or not is 30 C° to them .. it can be unbearable for some to
shower withroom temperature water while others may feel it as lukewarm .

The bigger thedifference between your body temperature and water the colder or
warmer it willfeel. So cold can be defined as a big or a slightly bigger drop
intemperature. Warm as a slight increase in temperature.. and hot as a
bigincrease in temperature.

Q5  Whatis the most expensive item you've ever bought?

A5         Anusha Shanbhag thegift of acceptance is the highest in its kindWed

It's been over 6years now that we purchased an apartment in Bangalore. One of
the firstmaterialistic things me and my husband invested in. He still remembers
the daythe kitchen tiles were fixed: a day before our house-warming ceremony.
Memoriesare still fresh. This apartment has not just cost us money but also our
health, time and huge amount of energy.

It has taught uslife lessons that no University could ever teach.

I, on my own, purchased a pair of gold bangles costing a whopping 1.9lacs this
year.

The one made of Goddess Lakshmi coins on the right:

It took me almost a year to save small bits of money to buy thisbeautiful piece
of jewelry.

P. S: I have new found respect for men who sacrifice their comfort toinvest
money for house and jewelry, all for their family. Many middle classfamily
fathers/husbands go through a great ordeal of pressure from their peersto spend
exuberant amounts of money on buying precious metals, or property. Itis not an
easy task to fulfill or yo refrain from getting influenced. Over aperiod of
time, it brings nothing but depression and a sense of failure.

I didn't have aspecial desire on gold earlier(before marriage) but when you put
a lot of hardwork and see the result shining brightly on your wrist, it
reallybrings immense joy.

Nowadays women whowork have the luxury to fulfill their family’s wishes and
empathize more totheir male counterparts leading to a happier and healthier
marital life. Womenare more aware of the consequences of spending money and
thus have betterfinancial knowledge and thus make better choices in life.

Q6         Whatare some psychological tricks that supermarkets use to get
customers to buymore?

A6 Suryakanth Read many books on psychologyOct 26

I am quoting a scene from an Indian movie where the hero explains
thepsychological hacks used by supermarkets.

One:     When you enter thesupermarket, they give you a basket. If you have
come to buy one item, you unconsciously end up buying more things due to the
basket. Plus, buying oneitem in a big basket doesn't look cool.

Two:There is nowindow, no clock and no external light coming inside the
supermarketbecause customers tend to leave when they become conscious of
enormous timespent in the supermarket.

Three:Kid itemslike chocolates and toys are usually kept in the lower section
of therack so that small kids notice them. Once they see, they can ask their
parentsto buy them.

Four:Essentialitems like dal, flour, etc., are kept far away from the
entrance.Because they are essential items, people eventually find and buy them.

If the essential items are far, people will glance at other items whilegoing to
the essential items section. Hence, they tend to buy things they donot intend
to purchase.

Five:At thebilling counter, they keep items that lure adults and as well as
kids.So that they can add these items to the basket and buy them.

Source:Note: Thecredit goes to the makers of the movie and marketing geniuses
who cameup with these concepts.

My note- Certain things like gooseberry dried in honey is fast movingin  near
by supermarket. They mostly keepin a back shelf except one packet in front
shelf. Reason- People would ask forit. Front Shelf can be used for other not
moving item

Q8         Whatis “sick food” in your culture?

A8         George DominicLives inKerala, IndiaOct 23

If a Malayali falls sick medicines alone won't do any better, but abowl of hot
Kanji along with medicine will do the magic.

In Kerala (India),the ultimate cure for any sickness is a bowl of hot cooked
soupy rice known asKanji.

And usually it is offered along with dishes like Payar (Gram dish),Achar
(Pickle) and Pappadam. The trio of Kanji, Pappadam and Achar is oftenregarded
as the traditional sick food in Kerala.

And this is not just "sick food" but a traditional dish ofthe State and people
do have Kanji whether they are sick or not.

Kanji is healthy and light and more over a ‘feel good' food.

And definitely, Kanji do come in different forms and a popular avatarof Kanji
is Pazham Kanji which is the fermented cooked rice of the previousday.

Any how Pazham Kanji is a popular breakfast dish and not usually a"sick food".

Since this isabout “sick food”, I guess I should also mention about Kerala's
immunitybuilding dish which is also a varient of Kanji known as Karkidaka Kanji.

Karkidaka Kanji (medicinal porridge) is one of the special therapeuticAyurvedic
diets that is prescribed during Karkidakam season to overcomediseases caused by
the monsoon and to improve one’s immunity.

So I guess the 'feel better' ‘sick food' for a Malayali is Kanji.

Q10       Whatis the airflow pattern of a ceiling fan in a room?

A10       2 Answers Paul Menconi, former EnergyAuditor, Residential and
CommercialAnswered 3h ago

If the fan is operating correctly, blowing air down, then the air flowsdown to
the floor and spreads to the walls. If the room is small, the air flowspartway
up the walls; in larger rooms the flow runs out before it encountersthe walls.

Meanwhile, the fan pulls air from 8–12” behind it. Since the ceiling isthere,
the effect is to pull air from along the ceiling towards the fan.

So overall theflow is down to the floor, across to the walls, and up to the
ceiling and towards the fan.The actual flow depends on room size: in a huge
room the circulation may not becomplete; in a small room paper… (more)

For a long time, ceiling fans have been widely utilized as an excellent cooling
device fordeveloping a comfortable interior atmosphere. Through convective
heattransmission and sweat evaporation, a ceiling fan may improve human body
heatdissipation, offering greater thermal comfort perception under hot
situations.

Because ceiling fans play such a vital part in establishing asustainable indoor
environment, it's critical to have a deeper understanding oftheir airflow
pattern in order to improve layout design and operation.
