Q1   If a light bulb is dead, does it stillconsume electricity if the switch is
on?

A1            Loring Chien electrical engineer for45 years Oct 24

It’s used to beassumed, that no, adead bulb consumed no energy.

But that was whenbulbs were simple and incandescent. They basically only had a
glass envelope, leads and a filament. Failure of any one of those resulted in
the filamentbreaking and becoming open. If it emitted light the bulb was on and
used energy. No light, it wasdead and consumed no energy.

Todays bulbs aremore complex, with CFLand LED replacing incandescents in most
applications. They are actually systems, ineach bulb there is a power converter
and some drivers and then the actual lightemitting components.

It is now possiblefor one or more parts of a subsystem to fail and cause the
light to stop, while the subsystem or othersubsystems continue to draw power.

I found such abulb the other day, it had failed making light but was still warm
sometimeafter. I checked with power monitor and it was stilldrawing a fair
amount of its rated power.

Q2            A doctor's salary is much higherthan any engineer, but why do a
lot of students choose engineering althoughthey get the opportunity to admit to
a medical college?

A2            Himank Gupta Oct 29

A higher salary isn't always ‘better'.

Take a MBBS doctorfor example. If I am working in a govt hospital in
Delhi/central institutes asMO/JR, I would get approx 1lk/month or after taxes
like 90ishk a month.

We doctors rarelyhave stock options or such things in our pay so we don't
really have thatsituation where our CTC looks huge but our in hand pay is
small. In that respect, yes, a doctorearns more after graduation compared to an
average engineer

However, whatpeople don't see is the huge amount of stress and
responsibility/accountabilityaccompanying the job. Heck, many mbbs doctors get
duty in casualty where they are in constant fear ofgetting beaten/abused by the
patient and relatives.

Also, a doctor hasto prepare lot of medico-legal documents as well ( MLCs) and
holdresponsibility for many things since our profession is closely tied with
law.Basically, there is a lot of responsibility as well ( And of course,
youactions can decide life and death at some crucial moments).

This is why the pay is higher and should remainhigher. It is a stressful job.
Also-

Pay is noteverything. Stress matters alot as well. A high paying job with huge
stresswill wear you down much faster than a normal paying job with limited
stress.

Note- A lot ofpeople have been messaging me over the past few days, especially
regarding UGcolleges and everything. You guys need to turn on your messaging
option thoughotherwise I can't reply and help you

My note- Number of seats for MBBS is lesser. Forengineering seats are more was
a reason before 30 years. More engineeringcolleges came, more engineering
graduates came out, but jobless.

A doctor canpractice after himself alone, but an engineer cannot.

Even today- Many OCprefer MBBS, but due to reservation, without very high rank
above 98% , an OCcannot imagine in the normal course. But though marks are low,
some fare high in entranceexamination and get selected for MBBS. It depends on
LUCK.

Q3            How much unit does a normal fan andsingle tube light consume if
it runs for 3 hours per day?

A3            Gopala Krishnan, former RetiredAssistant General Manager
1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004) Answeredjust now

Wattage of a normalceiling fan is 65 and that of a tube light is 45. So one
hour consumption is110 watts. For three hours 330 watts. 1000 watts is a unit.
Normally in Chennaione unit of electricity is charged about 5 rupees.

Q4            Why do agents get percentage-basedcommission? Is buying/selling
linearly difficult as price goes up?

A4            Prasanna BhaleraoI have someexperience in real estate deals. Thu

In India, the standard commission or brokeragerate is 4% shared equally at 2%
by buyer and seller. This can be negotiated. Why do agents charge percentage
based brokerage?Because, it is easy and fair. Of course, buying and selling
will beprogressively difficult as the price moves up.

Q5            Is white rice bad for you if you aretrying to lose weight?

A5            Rohan Monga Mon

No one food is badfor you whether you want to stay healthy or want to lose
weight as well.

On the other hand, white rice is perfectly healthyfor you even if you want to
lose weight as well.

There is a very bigmisconception in people's minds that they have to leave
carbs or specificallywhite rice as it makes people fat.

One thing for sureis that these myths or fear from carbs would definitely make
you fat or build avery negative relationship with food and that stress can
possibly make you fat.

Now coming to theanswer,

No White ricecannot make any person in this world fat if you have any medical
condition/disease such asdiabetes then it is advised to consult your doctor or
a medical professionaljust to be on top of your health, otherwise white rice is
just perfectfor everyone.

As it is easy todigest, blend great with lots of dishes such as
dal/legumes/chicken/eggs/curry,etc.

And yes you canconsume white rice in your fat loss phases or weight loss phase
or just as itis to stay healthy too

Just make sure thatyou blend it with good fats and protein, like dal made using
ghee and eatenwith rice.

Things to be noted,

1. White rice doesnot make you fat, if you eat more white rice or any other
food for instancethan what your body demands, it will be stored as fat

2. Carbs does notmake you fat

3. People who saycarbs make you fat, block them

4. If you consumethe healthiest things in the world more than the usual it
would harm you, asthey say, moderationis the key to everything

You balance out thefoods that nourish your body and the foods that make you
happy.

Just strike the right balance.

Don't fear whiterice, they are just perfect and healthy for your body, they are
light to digestand can surely be consumed while losing weight too.

When you eat anyform of food more than your body would require, it will get
stored as fat, thuseat mindfully, don't eat to make yourself full to your neck,
and have a goodtime.

Also, you don't need to eat brown rice to lose weight!

Q6            What do you need to know beforereplacing your air conditioner?

A6            2Answers Liam Hines, Retired from Public life after60 yrs working
,college LifeAnswered Thu

If you were tochoose repairs over replacements, how much would it cost? Is it
as simple as aclogged component? Or is the entire outdoor unit malfunctioning?
Consider alsothat if your aircon is having major trouble, it might not just
need a majorrepair, but multiple ones. These can be as expensive as buying an
entirely newunit.

A good rule ofthumb is that if your aircon is nearing the end of its lifespan,
and if therepairs cost over 50% of the aircon itself, it’s time to replace
it.LiamHines's Space for all house 🏡 cleaning tips.

Size of opening ifwall or window unit. How powerful your needs require. If
central pad mount unitcan you replace a part or recharge it.

My note- The problem is spare parts. New models with addedfunctions appear and
companies want to sell them. Without spare parts we haveto purchase new models
when problem arise. Old units are valued just 2000-2500rupees which are
purchased before 6-7 years. Probably it is a marketing technic.

Q7            Why do so many carvings of ancientHindu humans and gods depict
them as bending right or left from the waist?

A7            Rami Sivan Oct 29

Well noticed.

This is calledTribhanga - “three-bends” and is a soft and relaxed posture much
appreciated inthe Hindu texts on Aesthetics. It is often used in icons of women
and youthslike Krishna or Muruga and those of devotees and patrons.

There is no higher meaning to it other than aestheticand artistic value.

The High Gods are mostly depicted as standing straightup - sthānka.

Q8            Is there any real wilderness left inthe British Isles?

A8            Claire Jordan Oct 29

The British Isleshave been inhabited by humans and proto-humans for close to a
million years, sothere’s probably nowhere that hasn’t been affected by Man at
some point. But there’s a large area in themiddle of Wales which is actually
called The Desert of Wales because hardlyanyone goes there except forestry
workers, and a fairly large areanorth of Lochalsh in Scotland which is so
uninhabited it doesn’t even have a name, and no-one goesthere except climbers.

Q9            Why did hominids like caves so much?

A9            MattRiggsby MA Archaeology, Boston University Mon

They didn’t.

Contrary to well-known documentaries like TheFlintstones, nobody lived in
caves. Caves aredark, they can be clammy and uncomfortable, and they can harbor
unfriendlyanimals. They typically have poor air circulation as well, so if you
bring firewith you to fix the first two points, you can smoke yourself out
prettyquickly. And, of course, many regions have few or no caves anyway.

This is not to saythat people didn’t use caves from time to time. The mouths of
caves were sometimes utilized justlike any other natural shelter, but basically
no further back thannatural lighting allowed. They might also be used, for
reasons beyond ourcurrent understanding, for burials and art. But caves do
notshow evidence of regular occupation by humans or our earlier hominid
ancestors.

To the extent wehave archaeological remains in caves, it’s something of a
result of survivorbias. Caves shelter their contents from the elements. It’s
possible that ourPaleolithic ancestors painted the entire landscape, but we’d
never know becausethose materials are easily wiped away by the action of wind,
rain, and sun. It’s not that our ancestors liked caves so much as we have
adisproportionately high level of evidence from caves.

Q10          What is the difference between humansand animals when it comes to
hearing?

A10          Ken Saladin Former professor of animalbehaviour Oct 25

A thing I findinteresting about the hearing of many animals is that they can’t
hear over a broad spectrum offrequencies like we can, but have ears tuned only
to specific frequenciesbiologically relevant to them.

They’re like aradio tuned to one AM or FM frequency, so that’s all you hear,
even though youknow a myriad other frequencies are out there “in the air.”

For example, some tree frogs in the genus Hyla canhear only two narrowfrequency
bands—one corresponding to the frequency (pitch) of their ownspecies’ mating
calls and another corresponding to the sounds made by theirmost important
predators, such as frog-eating bats. Outside of those two frequency bands,
they’redeaf.

You or I might goout to a woodland pond at night and hear a riotous cacophony
of frog, toad, andinsect calls of many species, but any one frog, toad, or
insect out there is deaf toalmost all of that—filtering out everything but the
sound of its own species.

Another interestingimplication of this is that frogs, birds, and other calling
animals “speak” inregional dialects and can’tunderstand (or even hear) members
of their own species from a differentgeographic region.

For example, femaletree frogs of the species Hyla cinerea in Florida have ears
tuned to hear themating calls of Florida males, but they’re deaf to the mating
calls of the samespecies of males from Texas. And conversely, the Texas females
can hear thelocal males, but can’t hear the same species of males from Florida.
(Femaletree frogs found to use their lungs for noise cancellation)

There’s a very similar study, with similarresults, on the Hyla of Australia.
The females of New SouthWales and Tasmania can’t hear the calls of same-species
males of Queensland, orvice versa.

I think thisphenomenon might explain a lot about my earlier dating life.
