QUES ANSW DIVINE 50
Q1 What is preta andghost? How do the astral body get form?
A1 The soul which passes out ofthe body after death is termed ‘Preta’,one that
is bound on its onward march to the Beyond. The soul in itsdisembodied form
hovers about its original and familiar places for ten days. Itis in the form of
a ghost during these ten days.
The astral body takesshape from day to day with the formation of the head,
eyes, and otherlimbs of the Linga Sarira, fed and nourished by the sesamum and
water pouredout in libation over the stones which represent the ancestors.
The soul is fullyembodied on the eleventh day. Itstarts on its journey to the
judgement seat of Lord Yama, the God of death. Ittakes one full year from the
time of death to reach Lord Yama’s place.
The ten days’ rites should not be neglected. The son should perform the
Sapinda ceremony on the twelfth day and thesixteen monthly offerings. The soul
is sustained on its onward march to thejudgement seat by the libations offered
to it by the son.
Q2 What is told by ourforfathers about dthe dog’s howling?
A2 Regarding dog howling, what we heard from ourforefathers/ancestors is that,
as and when Kalans (Lord Yama Dharmaraja’s representatives)start roaming in
search of lives in that particular area, the dogsin that area could see them
and start howling/crying for the reason that theyare taking away the human
lives.
They take it as per Lord Yama Dharmaraja’s directions.
My experience is thatas and when I hear a dog howl, I simply assume that there
might be a death inthat nearby area or I hear about death of a human being.
Q3From which word Mythology comes from ?
A3 Mythology comes from the Sanskrit word mithyaameaning not true. Therefore
all mythological stories are untrue stories
Q4 DO there was only one veda earlier?
A4 According to one view all the veda was classifiedearlier into one group,
but later divisioned redominantely based on prose(yaju),poem (rk) and
song(sama).
Also we can see from puranas that earlier only one yajurveda was thereand
yajnavalkya got sukla yajurveda from sun. (Ref.bagavtaham canto12-ch-6).
Thus krshna yajurvedapreceded sukla yajurveda and unfortunately many count
sukla yajurveda alone as yajurveda while describing the numberof mantras.
Q5 Do one year mourningis observed if a lady passes away in a brahmin house ?
A5 We (brahmins) should not visit any temple nor celebrate any festivals and
also not draw kolam (rangoli) atthe entrance of the house for one full year
until the first davasham is completed with due formalities.
This is true only if the soul which has passed away is directly related
to thehead of the house. No such formalities need to completed if thedeparted
soul is related to the lady ofthe house

Srutiliterally means what is heard, and Smriti means what is remembered.
Sruti is revelation and Smriti is tradition. Upanishad is a Sruti.Bhagavad Gita
is a Smriti.
Sruti is primaryauthority If there is anything in a Smriti which contradicts
theSruti, the Smriti is to be rejected
Q7 DO the practice ofTirumangalya dharanam has any vedic sanction?
A7 Nois the answer. Practice of Tirumangalya dharanam doesn't appear to have
the sanction of the Shruti.Search as you might, in the entireYaju: Samhita
or in the Mantra Prasna (which codifies the ritual-related mantras meant for
various occasions, auspicious and otherwise), you are unable to find a
single mantra for use during the occasion.
Pondering over the Sita Kalyana episode with a magnifying glass, we arestill
unable to find even a strayreference to the practice of tying knots It is
abundantly clear from all thenotable omissions as aforesaid, that Tying the
Knot was never an approved component of themarriage procedure, leave
alone being the highlight thereof, which it nowis.
ThAli might havebeen introduced to provide an instant identification to a
married woman, as ameasure of affording her additional protection from the
unholy-minded.
It would also be a constant reminder to the lady of her married state and the
necessity ofadhering to attendant norms of conduct.
Considering the special vulnerability of women, the Mangala Sutra was possibly
designed as a protective fence, entitling ladies for special consideration and
regard, prompting nothing but the best of thoughtsin the minds of the
onlooker.
The shloka is used at the time of tying the knot is -
maangalyam thanthunaanena
mama jeevana-hethunaa /
kanThe badhnaami subhage
tvam jeeva sardassatahm //
(I am tying themangalasutra on your neck which will protect my life.May you
live a hundred years.)
Here the groom is praying for the longevity of his wife. His longevityis
implied. As long as she lives withthe mangalyasutra on her neck, his life is
assured.
The first two knots are tied by the groom and the third by the groom'ssister.
(There is difference of opinion on this). It is to make her a VIP andhappy,
that she has been given the taskof putting the third knot.
Q8 What is the locationof the Mind? Where in the physical bodyit dwells?
A8 The Mind is nota tangible object nor has it any form. It is nothing but a
bundle of thoughts continuously flowingwithin. This is the surmise that we
have taken as the base while explaining about Mind.
In the head at the back is Oblongata, which is said to be the vital part
where all memories arestored and if it gets damaged, the person becomes either
thoughtless, speechless or mad, because thecells there get displaced
ormisplaced and the information reaching there or stored cannot be read
properly.

exactly is the division?
A10 Vadamas- This descriptionhas been given to theSmarthas who came to South
India later than some others who had migrated and settled there. For them
these were Northerners orVadamas.
These Vadamas came in various batches. Those who already had settled
earlierwere the Choladesa Vadamas.
Vadamas in General had migrated from somewhere on the southern bank ofthe
river Narmada.
According to Mahaperiyaval, they salute Narmada looking north when they do
sandhyvandanam.
There is a place called Broach on the northern bank of the river Narmada in
Gujrarat. This has come from the word Bhrigukaccham. Kacham means a river
bank. There is a temple dedicated to Brigu Maharshi at Broach. The
Bhrihacharanam or the disciples of Brigumust have migrated from this place
andsettled in various places in Tamil Nadu
They must be one of the earlier migrants to Tamil Nadu, after the Cozhiyans
because most of the landowners inthe Tanjore area were from thissub-sect. They
were those who called the later migrants as Vadamas.
It is interesting to observe that names of divisions of this sect arebased on
the places they settled, whereas the sub-sect names of Vadamas are based on
the place oftheir origin.
