AVALOSEUNDA- ROASTED RICE POWDER SNACK

Dear friends, 

Normally I prepare CulturalQA keeping TV switched ON and volume kept medium. 
Rather than watching, hearingsoaps I prepare and finish the QA for next day 
posting. Mostly the QApreparation might be over by 9PM starting at 6 PM.

I was watchingserial Amma- Makal (Mother -daughter) in Zee TV at 9 PM on 
16-11-2021. I wasvery much attracted to the conversation of a Dubai returned 
middle aged  man to his wife in an occasion. The wife askswhat wrong has 
happened to you living with me all these years.

The husbandreplies- Onus parayanda, jnam ippol aana methichha avalosunda polae 
aayi (Living with you, now I am likethe roasted rice powder round snack thrash 
by an elephant). I could not controlmy laugh. 

Avaloseunda is arice powder preparation added with crated coconut flush and 
jaggery/sugar and preparedin spherical shape, mostly by Christians.

My thoughts went tosome Hindu spherical preparations. I requests readers 
respond with additionsand corrections.

1Kozhukkatta

There are two typesof preparations, one is rarely and another occasionally 
prepared. Thedifference is getting narrowed nowadays.

Kozhukkatta is a rice preparationmade out of roughly ground rice dough added 
with crated coconut meat,  boiled slightly and made to the size of anorange and 
again boiled in water. Slight salt is added. Mustard and curry leavesis fried 
and added for taste.   

The dough  also can he held in fist and made asPitikozhukkattai . 

For Amavasi(dark moon) manyBrahmins have the preparation Kozhukkattai in orange 
size in night instead ofrice. Nowadays many children like Kozhukkatta, it has 
become a weekly nightsnack in many homes. 

Cannot talk keepingeven a bit of kozhukkattai in his/her mouth. So a person not 
answering aquestion is asked- Are youhaving kozhukkattai in mouth?

I recollect alegend told by mother in childhood days. One recently married man  
went with his wife  to her  home and stayed a week. Mother in law preparedand 
gave different snack items. One of them was kozhukkattai which he tastedmuch.  

On return he askedhis wife to prepare thatitem. He forgot the name of 
kozhukkattai. Wife began to cry on hishitting her for not preparing that in the 
evening. She started crying. Hearing  the cries next house mami came and 
seeingbulged portion of body by hitting said- See-it appears like kozhukkattai. 
Then he gotthe name and next home mami herself prepared and gave Kozhukkattai.

2. Rava Laddu.

Rava laddu isanother preparation, using wheat rava, adding sugar and spices 
like cashew,cardamom skin removed, raisin etc. Mostly prepared  during festive 
seasons. It is mostlyprepared  about the size of a lemon. This would also 
expandwhile putting in mouth. 

3. Maladu

It is preparedusing Bengal gram powder, adding slight oil, and sugar  and 
spices. It would expand very much and cutto pieces and eaten or bitten as small 
pieces. Unlike rava laddu it is sticky. 

5. Ganapathi khoukkatta.

Batter is prepared thickwith raw rice, slightly boiled in a    similar manner 
like Kozhukkatta, but  it is spread on leaf, a jaggery added coconutpoornam is 
made to gooseberry size and covered with a layer of the dough andagain boiled 
.During Vinayakachathurthi, in all Brahmin homes, this kozhukkatta is prepared 
asnivedyam. 

However thiskozhukkatta is prepared during srardha also to serve Bhokthas. 

Though not preparedin homes regularly, many restaurants like Adyar aanada 
bhavan, Grand snacks etc. Prepare it as evening snack. Size abouta big onion. 
They prepare it in mould.  

6. Laddu

This is made usinggram flour made to semi liquid form making as boondi frying 
in oil, mix with hotjaggery-ghee mix and add spices like cashew cardamom, clove 
etc. and preparedto the size of a   small ball. It isprepared for marriage as a 
seer item in different sizes. For sambandhies,large, added with more spices. 
Guests smaller, with few spices. 

Nowadays Laddu isavailable in tea shops also in Kerala. I could listen to a 
doctor telling aboutnature of diabetics in Kerala.- Give two laddus, and one 
tea without sugar.What is the purpose of drinking a tea without sugar after 
consuming two laddus,full of sugar.

7a. Tirupathi Laddu.

Tirupathi laddu isvery large in size. Devotees taking darsan tickets are given, 
free laddus.Tirupathi laddu is to the size of a skin removed coconut. 
Ingredients likeghee, spices etc.  are much more. Normallydevotees distribute 
the laddu to neighbours also. Small kids appearing verysmart are compared to 
Laddu.  

7. Ellurunda,

In earlier days itwas prepared with black sesame.It is added to jaggery  boiled 
addingghee and made to small balls to the size of gooseberry. Somehow even 
duringsrardha the quantity prepared was slightly more than serving to bhokthas. 
If afamily member ask for more ellurunda after srardha is over, it was common 
totell- Go as bhokhas for  srardha. Now it is available in packsin provision 
stores probably prepared from Kovilpatti in Tamilnadu. Ellurundais also 
available as candy after skin removed black sesame or using white sesame.
