| Exactly 59 years ago - 18 November 1962 is a day that will live in infamy in
Indian military history. On this day, Major Shaitan Singh and his men of
Charlie Company, 13 Kumaon, fought the invading Chinese forces - literally - to
the last man and last bullet at Rezang La.
When their bodies were recovered some months later, many soldiers' fingers
were still on the trigger, and many were killed in trying to bayonet Chinese
forces. Their wounds showed that they had taken the bullets on their chest and
had never turned their backs to the enemy.
Some of the men had actually been airlifted straight from the plains into
Chushul - 14,500 feet above sea level, and after a brief rest inducted into the
frontline at Rezang La - 16,420 feet, without the mandated acclimatisation
period.
The battle made the company one of the most decorated in the entire army: 1
Param Vir Chakra, 8 Vir Chakras, 4 Sena Medals, one mention in dispatches -
nearly all of them posthumously.
More than a hundred Indian soldiers died on this day in 1962 fighting at
Rezang La.
