Q1  Namethe Goddess worshipped during navarathri
A1 TheNavratri is observed during the nine days period from, pratipada (1st
tithi) toNavami (9th tithi) of the bright fortnight of the month of Ashwin
(September-October).During this period Goddess Durga, the embodiment of might
and maternal care, is worshipped with almost devotion
Thelegend is that two demons Shumbh and Nishumbh, became so powerful that
theiratrocities made the gods leave their seats of power and flee for life.
With nosolution in sight all the gods got together and prayed to the primordial
powerto save them. They continued to worship & prayer for nine days, where
onthe primordial power (AadiShakti) appeared in the form of Durga and took upon
herself the combinedmight of all the gods and annihilated the demons.

On the concludingday, the Goddess is given devotional adieu, beseeching to
visit again nextyear. Itis believed that the Pooja and Anushthaan performed in
this duration is highlypropitious, to get over the evil forces and to sail safe
through the turbulentlife.

Q2 What is Thiruvadippooram: ?

A2Thiruvadippooram: Sri Andal, daughter of Peri Alvar, had devoted herself
toLord Ranganatha and is considered to be Goddess Mahalakshmi. She was bornin
Pubba (Pooram) nakshatram in Adi month and hence on that day we
celebrateThiruvadippooram. On that day women recite Sri Andal’s composition
“Naychiyar Thirumoli”. On thisoccasion Maapanyaram or Puttu ( a sweet dish made
of rice floor friedand steamed.)

Q3 What is the importance of MahalayaPaksha ?

A3 MahalayaPaksha (Fortnight): The fifteen days after the Full moon day in
Bhadrapadamonth of the Lunar year, (Krishna Paksha), is known as Mahalaya
Paksha. Itusually falls in September-October each year.

A Ceremony (Shradha) is performed during these days, either on the Thithi day
(day corresponding to the death) of the Parents or onthe Mahalaya Amavasya day
(New Moon Day),.

Thispractice is prevalent among all Hindus, all over India, irrespective of
theirsub-castes. It is generally believed, that performing Shradha during this
period, can evensubstitute the annual Shradha performance, on the exact death
day.

During thisfortnight no auspicious function should be performed.

Mandyam Iyengars perform this on the particularThithi day of the death of their
parent, with usual Tharpanam.A Brahmin Bachelor boy ( Brahmachari) is invited
to partake the food and ishonored with Sambhavanai. The Paksha ends on the day
of Mahalaya Amavasya (Newmoon day at the end of this fortnight)

My note- This Mahalaya paksha is notobserved in central Kerala according to my
information.

Q4 Do the gayathri is related to the organsof the body?

A4“Tatsat------Prachodayaat” : These 24 letters in Sanskrit, are the
mostimportant utterances of the mantra. I pray to Him, the Creator of the
universe, who orchestrates our life, who controls our every activity, who is
liked byeveryone, who has a aura of knowledge, who has a Poorna Roopa, who
givesEternal Peace(Moksha).

The twenty four letters also represents twentyfour important parts of the human
body. They are toes, feet, ankle, knee, urinary tract, sex hormones, hip, naval,
stomach, breast, lungs, heart, veins, neck, face, jaws, nose, eyes, arms,
forehead, ear, scalp,nerves, brain,

Gayathri is a goddess, with five heads, tenarms. The heads represent the Five
main needs of life (Pancha Bhoota), such asEarth, Water, Fire, Air and Cosmos
(Bhoomi, Jala, Agni, Vaayu, Akasha).

The ten arms are meant to control the Cosmicrays emanating in the universe,
from all the ten directions, to protect thehealth of the living beings. There
is also an effect of the nine planets on us.The twenty four letters in the
mantra represent the five heads, ten arms andnine planets.

It is usual practice to do Panayaama (breathcontrol), before uttering
Gayathrimantra. Repeated recitation of the Mantra, with proper timing, is a form
of meditation which ensures peace of mind, exercises the nerves and encourages
blood circulation.

Karnataka, India, and this placeknown as Thalakaveri. It is believed that a dip

Shatsram:(Pooja for Oil Bath):

My note- Day is not mentioned. Learnt readerscan respond. Somehow now only dip

theroyal and solid gold elephants, to exhibit her power and riches, ignoring
toinvolve Kunti, mother of Pandavas, for the ceremony. Arjuna observing his
depressed mother, broughtIravatha (Devendra’s royal white elephant) to earth,
through a laddermade with his arrows. Kuntiperformed Pooja happily. As a mark
of this we perform Pooja to a clay elephant

Q8 What is Margazhi thingal?

A8 MargazhiThingal (Dhanus month): Based on a recording by Sri Sriram Bharathi.

InBhagavadgeetha, Sri Krishna says, “I am Kalpavriksha in trees, I am Samaveda
in Vedas, Margazhi inmonths”. (Masanam Margashirsho-aham) We complete a day in
24 hours, whenearth revolves around its own axis, whereas, it is one day for
the Devas, whenEarth goes around the Sun in twelve months.

In the 24 hours of the day early morning 4to6hours, iscalled Bramha Muhurtham.
At this time when the Sun is rising in the horizon, there is no angular movement
and there is stillness.

At this hourour mind will be in Satvagunam(Calmness) and it is in Rajoguna in
the day andTamoguna in the night. The brain will be sharp and there will be
full clarityof perception. Similarly, for the Sun, who transits from
Dakshinayanawhen he is in Rajoguna, to Utarayana in Tamoguna, the month of
Margazhi, is thetransit month and there is stillness. This is the Bramha
Muhurta for the Devas. Therefore early morning hours of 4to6AM, in Margazhi, is
Bramha Muhurtam inBramha Muhurtam. This time is therefore preferred to wake Him
up andpray. For this purpose SriAndal has composed Thiruppavai, at the rate of
one sloka for everyday of the month.

Srivaishnavaites considerMargazhi as a very sacred month and go to Vishnu
templeeveryday, in Brahma Muhurtham, for reciting Thiruppavai (Devotional songs
bySri Andal) and offer prayers.

Q9 When did deepavali originated?

A9 Manypeople think that the Deepavali festival started in the Dwapara Yuga
duringKrishna’s Incarnation, butBhagavan says that Deepavali was in existence
even before the Dwapara Age.

On Deepavali day, Lord Rama was coronated.Rama, along with Lakshmana and Sita,
returned to Ayodya after killing Ravanaand all his associates in Lanka.

Rama’s coronation took place on Deepavali day LordKrishna killed Narakasura
with the help of His consort, Sathyabhama.

It may lookrather silly because Krishna could have killed Narakasura straight
away. Whydoes He need Sathyabhama, His consort? If Sathyabhama is needed it
means thatshe is more powerful than Krishna Himself, which is an insult to the
masculinepart of society.

Deepavalialso happened to be the day when Emperor Vikramadithya ascended to the
throne.Emperor Vikramadithya is known for his scholarly qualities. He was a
greatpatron of literature and music. In his court, He had nine great scholars
calledNavaratna.

Q10“In a family situation, if the parenthas done wrong, will the child suffer
the bad karma, resulting in the death ofthe child?”

A10 Nothingdoing. In the Divine calculation, each has to suffer the
consequences of hisown karma. Thefather’s karma is not brought forward to the
son. The son’s karma isnot brought forward to the grandson. No, it is not like
that. If it were likethat, we would not be here

Q11 Do any traditions followed inconstruction of the temples?

A11 MostHindu Temples are built following some traditions as stated in Agama
texts, to locatethe Sanctums of various Deities. However, the rules change with
certain Puranastories of the city called “SthalaPuranas.”

The rulesalso could not be followed when a new Sanctum is built much later
after themain temple. Some rules of “seniority” is always followed. The main
Deity ofthe temple and most others face east. In all Siva Temples, the main
Deity isfound as Siva Linga. Only the sanctum of Sri Ganesha is built to the
right sideof Siva and all others including Sakthi [Parvathi] and Vishnu will be
on Hisleft side. However, in Madurai where Sri Meenakshi is the queen of the
land and Siva being theguest, Siva Sanctum is on the north side, to the left of
Meenakshi

Q12 Where do we have Mahavishnu temple?

A12 The only Temple for Sri Maha Vishnu in the world [alsothe largest] is
AngkhorVat in Cambodia. AllVishnu temples in India are for one of His
Avatharas. Most of the times, the sanctums of Lakshmi is in the outer circle of
temples. Until about 600years back, there were few sanctums built for the
female Deities in maintemples of Siva or Vishnu, when a movement of Sakthi
worship became popular andthe sanctum for Parvathi and Lakshmi were added to
the existing temples insouth India.

In Srirangam, the main Deity SriRanganatha faces south due to the story of
promise to Vibhishana that He willface the kingdom of Sri Lanka

MY note- There are manytemples where Vishnu is in Lying position over anatha in
Kerala and Tamilnadu

Q13 Do there is much to get excited on theladies permitted to wear Churidar in
the temple?

A13 It is atemple custom imposed just like gents have to wear Dhothi in
Padmanabhaswamytemple in Trivandrum. The Badrinathan or Pandharpur Vittalan or
TirupatiVenkateshwaran or Udipi Srikrishnan who are none other than our
Guruvayurappandoes not object to ladies coming in Churidar.

Q14 Do karthigai deepam is an extension ofDeepaval?

A14Kaarthigai Deepam is a festival of lights, celebrated in the Tamil  month
of Kaarthigai. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the Kaarthigai   month
which coincides with Krithikai star. It is also considered as the extension  of
the Deepavali festival. In some houses, they double thenumber of    lamps
every day from the day of Deepavali and thisway, they end up witha   number  of
lamps on the day of Kaarthigai Deepam

A15Nakshatra means "thatwhich never decays." It is the name given to the
asterisms or mansions of the Moon. Vedicastrology uses 27-fold division  of
thezodiac called Nakshatra (constellations)

Q16 When did Ramayana was written?

A16 Thestory of Shri Ram's life was first narrated by Maharishi Valmiki in
theRamayana, which was written after Shri Ram was crowned as the king of
Ayodhya.Maharishi Valmiki was a great astronomer as he has made sequential
astronomicalreferences on important dates related to the life of Shri Ram
indicating thelocation of planets vis-a-vis zodiac constellations and the other
stars(nakshatras)

MaharishiValmiki has recorded in Bal Kaand sarga 19 and shloka eight and nine
(1/18/8,9)that Shri Ram was bornon ninth tithi of Chaitra month when he
position of different planets vis-a-viszodiac constellations and nakshatras
(visible stars) were

This data, was fed into the software. The results indicated that this was
exactly thelocation of planets/stars in the noon of January 10, 5114 BC. Thus
Shri Ram wasborn on January 10, 5114 BC (7121 years back).

As per theIndian calendar it was the ninth day of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra
month and thetime was around 12 to 1 noon time. This is exactly the time and
date when RamNavmi is celebrated all over India.

Q17 What is the location of Ayodhya?

A17 Ayodhyawas located on the banks of the Saryu river with Ganga and Panchal
Pradesh onone side and Mithila on the other side.

Q18 What was the age of Srirama when he gotmarried?

A18 Shri Ramwent out of Ayodhya in his childhood (13th year as per Valmiki
Ramayan) withRishi Vishwamitra who lived in Tapovan (Sidhhashram) . From there
he went toMithila, King Janaka's kingdom. Here he married Sita after breaking
ShivDhanusha. Researchers have gone along the route adopted by Shri Ram as
narratedin the Valmiki Ramayan and found 23 places which have memorials
thatcommemorate the events related to the life of Shri Ram. These include
ShringiAshram, Ramghat, Tadka Van, Sidhhashram, Gautamashram, Janakpur (now in
Nepal),Sita Kund, etc. Memorials are built for great men and not for
fictitiouscharacters.

on the January 5, 5089 BC,and it was on this day that Shri Ram left Ayodhya for
14 years of exile. Thus,he was 25 years old at that time (5114-5089). ).

There aew  several shlokas in Valmiki Ramayan whichindicate that Shri Ram was
25-years-old when he left Ayodhya forexile .ThusShri Ram had come back to
Ayodhya at the age of 39 (5114-5075).

My note- There are different versions about periodof Lord Rama in Thretha yuga.

Q19 What are the periods of Sri rama, jusesand Profet Mohammed?

A19 ProphetMohammad was born 1,400 years ago. Jesus Christ was born 2,000 years
back.Gautam Buddha was born 2,600 years back, whereas Ram was born 7,000 years
back.
