FILTER AND NET PART 2

 Dearfriends,

This is 2ndpart of my posting about filter. Here I cover filters which may be
moreinteresting.

Sincerely,

 8. Vatti, kotta and Muram

These areall made using splitting bamboo /cane as thin lengthy pieces and
braided to theform different items. The thickness varies between items.  Cane
made items are costlier.

The vatti(small size basket) to handle light weight items has lesser thickness.
Muram (winnowingsieve) has thicker strips braided in different forms depending
on the states.  Kutta (large size basket) is made usingthicker strips and used
for carrying things in addition to sieving purpose. Cowdung is applied to
winnower.

Earlier vattiwas used as a filter for cleaning cut vegetables. Cut vegetables
were put in toit and water is added and moved using hand.  Washed water was
drainedimmediately through the gaps in braiding. In the cooked rice vessel
fordraining starch water, vatti was kept in middle and starch water
enteringthrough braiding was taken out from it. Now metallic and plastic made
sievesare used.

Kotta (Basket)is used as a filter by workers while collecting sand from river
water. Thediving man will take the sand with water and come up .The water might
drainthrough the braiding and wet sand is loaded in country boats.

Duringfeasts light weight kotta is used to keep fried papads after placing
tissuepaper at bottom. The oil will   be absorbed to the paper. In present
dayfeasts many items are served in the plantain leaf, before guests enter
foreating meals. Two of the items are plantain and papad.

Winnower isused as a filter in two ways. One is by blowing it over paddy and
wheat. Thepathir (not fertilised light weight paddy) might blow off. During
yester years duringmanual rice preparation, winnower   was used for removing
husk and bran from rice. Slightly hammered paddy was placed onthe winnower and
it is moved with both hands up and down with speed. Thecoverings husk and bran
might fly off during the moving.

Sasthrikalrequire a winnower to keep things handy during all functions. For
srardha, thevegetables are arranged and kept in a winnower, the previous day.
Winnowerfinds a place in kitchen also on the srardha day. Winnower is used
forauspicious, semi auspicious and inauspicious functions among Brahmins.
During srardha day waste of vegetables arenot thrown out till srardha is over.
It is believed the pithrus coming mayconsume them. Mostly it was kept in a
corner of home in the winnower.

 9. The EEreasha thorthu

Thedouble weaved semi tight towel with small square holes is the favourite
item ofall cooks. The coconut milk is obtained after placing the ground coconut
meat inthe towel and squeezing. Milk will fall through the tiny holes in the
weaving.Nothing can replace the towel for squeezing and getting coconut milk.

 10 Metal sieve- arippa

It is oneof the kitchen items. Though the side is metallic round the bottom is
tiny netusing fibres. Different types of bottom are provided, with ease of
replacementas required. Normally I see my wife filter the wheat flour, rava
etc. usingthis sieve. For preparing the appam, the rice flour is filtered using
arippa.

When Iask for ginger use for my stomach uneasiness mini sieve (vati ketti) is
used bymy wife to filter ginger juice from ground ginger slightly smashing it.
The tea filter is slightly loose fibre or nylonweaved and fitted to metallic
framework.

11. Decoction percolator.

I have notconsumed decoction coffee in my boy hood days. On those days in
boiling watercoffee powder was added and covered with a plate. After few
minutes, the powdermight settle at bottom after essence mixing  in the water.
This was simplyadded to milk for milk coffee. Sugar was also added for milk
coffee. For blackcoffee it was diluted, added with sugar or karupetti. Even now
tea shops of Keralado not use decoction percolator.

Now mosthomes have decoction percolator. The coffee powder is supplied in
packs ground todecoction coffee form. It is placed in the filter, pressed a
little and boilingwater is added. Here too essence goes to a bottom vessel
through the percolatorand the coffee powder remains in filter. But there is a
big deference in the coffeetaste- of the decoction and coffee water added in
milk and prepared coffee.

A slightside track- I recollect a news item appeared in newspaper before
years.  It occurred when Late Rajeev Gandhi visitedChennai while he was prime
minister. He asked for famous decoction coffee. Theattending persons were least
prepared for it. They had only kept Nescafe. The newsitem read he became
impatient over the delay in providing coffee.

Somehowhe was supplied with decoction coffee getting coffee decoction from
famousrestaurant.  Other than news item, nothing more about year, time etc. is
in my remembrance.

 12. strainers in bath room and wash basins

Theshower employs a tiny holed filter. The waste water lines are connected to
thepipe line through a strainer with medium holes for air entering the pipe
line. This avoids foul smelling as well as water easy going to waste line. Bath
roomcleaning liquid/Dettol is used to clean the flooring after shower or bath
byall taking bath.

 13. The filters in the air conditioners.

Ourwindow air conditioners employ air filter. These filters are easily
removableand washable. Periodically they have to be cleaned and washed for
removing ofdusts. We can clearly observe freshness on the day filters are
cleaned andplaced. These filters are fibre filters.

14. Netting in the windows for preventinginsects – insects screen or simply
mosquito net

In simplelanguage though we say mosquito net, it is not permitting large
insects also.Various forms are there with fibre or metallic mesh. Mostly
opening and closingtype frames fitted with metallic mesh are provided inside of
windows in thehouses. Surely it is a dust filter also. This also requires
periodic cleaning.Normally a brush for mesh cleaning is supplied along with.
Just brushing, wecan observe tiny particles of dust falling down filtered by
the mesh. Once amonth cleaning is sufficient. Earlier the mesh was fixed with
windows in thepressing type  arrangement.

 15. Filters for extracting

In allayurvedic preparations of oils, the extraction is made using filter.
Thepreparations are made using various herbs and plant leaves etc. They
areremoved off after taking essence by filtering. Staining type filtering is
used

 16. Nets for fishing, over the open wells

Fibrenets are used for fishing. In open wells nylon net is provided to avoid
fallingof leaves. Nowadays metallic net is provided with fitting arrangement,
andopening provision. Motor is fitted to lift water. When necessary opened
thesmall provision, and water is fetched using bucket and rope.

Metallicnets are provided in fencing by many. Above the grill work net is
provided  to avoid the entrance of cats to porticonowadays.  In olden days
metallic net wasfitted over window air conditioners in buildings.

17. Water filters.

Earliertype water filter drums had either one or two filters fitted inside.
Water was filledand after sometimes collected through a tap. Impurities were
absorbed tofilters. Once in three days the filters were cleaned.
Now mosthomes have ROS system deploying paper and carbon filters.
Now inChennai many places have ROS water supplied by municipality free of
cost. Oppositeto my home about 20 metres away one unit is there. Servant lady
brings water inpots. Quality is found very good.

 17. Filtering in selection etc.

Allinterviews, tests are filtering to get the best suited condition for
theirrequirement. In the selection two IAS IPS etc. three types of filter
isemployed, First exam, 2nd exam and then interview.

I havenot covered the different types of filters employed in factories in
production of cotton, cement, wheat flour etc.In large temples the hundiyal
coins are separated using sieves.
