Q1 Which sloka  in Devi-Mahatmiyam indicate that Devi is theGreat Goddess.?

A1 This echoes Devi-Mahatmiyam prayer:

By you this universeis borne, by you this world is created;y you it is
protected,By you it isconsumed at the end,O Devi! You are the Supreme
Knowledge, as well as intellectand contemplation...

Without the grace of Saraswati, or Saraswati Kataksham, as itis called, Brahma
cannot do a worthwhile job as the Creator. Any maintenanceactivity needs plenty
of resources, mainly fiscal resources. So Lakshmi, theGoddess of Wealth, is an
essential companion to Vishnu. Siva, as Destroyer, derives power and energy from
Parvathi, or Durga as she is called Sakthi. It isonly the Hindu tradition,
which provides, even at the conceptual level, thepicture of the male and female
principles working together, hand in hand, asequal partners in the universe.

Q2 What is the position ofRivers in Hindu life?

A2 Hindus hold rivers in great reverence. The rivers are femaledivinities, food
and life bestowing mothers. As such, they are prominentamong the popular
divinities represented in the works of art of the classicalperiod

The most holy of rivers, the best known and most honored, is theGanga or
Ganges. She ispersonified as Goddess Ganga. The river rises from an ice bed,
13,800feet above the sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas. The river Saraswati is
regarded as the mother god.

Q3 What were the rulings onwomen protection during vedic times?

A3 "Where womenare honored there the gods are pleased; but where they are not
honored nosacred rite yields rewards," declares Manu Smriti (III.56) a text
onsocial conduct.

Women must be honored and adorned by their fathers, brothers, husbands and
brothers-in-law, who desire their own welfare." (Manu SmritiIII, 55)

"Where the female relations live in grief, the familysoon wholly perishes; but
that family where they are not unhappy everprospers." (Manu Smriti III, 57).

"The houses, on which female relations, not being dulyhonored, pronounce a
curse, perish completely as if destroyed by magic."(Manu Smriti III, 58)

Hence men, who seek their own welfare, should always honorwomen on holidays and
festivals with gifts of ornaments, clothes, and daintyfood." (Manu Smriti III,
59)

"If a husbanddies, a wife may marry another husband."If a husband deserts his
wife, shemay marry another." (Manu, chapter IX, verse 77).

"A woman's body," says Manu the lawgiver,"must not be struck hard, even with a
flower, because it is sacred."It is for this reason that the Hindus do not
allow capital punishment forwomen.

It is the specialinjunction of the Vedas that no married man shall perform any
religious rite, ceremony, or sacrifice without being joined in by his wife; the
wife is considered a partaker and partner in thespiritual life of her husband;
she is called, in Sanskrit, Sahadharmini,"spiritual helpmate."

The husband should engage his wife in dharma, the collectionand expenditure of
his wealth, in cooking food for the family, and in lookingafter the necessities
of the household . . ..

THE MOST IMPORTANT- Afather protects his daughter in childhood, a husband
protects his wife inyouth, and the sons protect their mother in old age.

The father who does not giveaway his daughter in marriage at the proper time
is censurable; censurable is the husbandwho does not approach his wife in due
season; and after the husband isdead, the son, verily is censurable, who does
not protect his mother.

 Even against theslightest provocations should women be particularly guarded;
for unguarded theywould bring grief to both the families.

The epic Mahabharata says, "While a father issuperior to ten learned priests
well-versed in the Vedas, a mother is superiorto ten such fathers, or the
entire world."

Two thousand years ago Saint Tiruvalluvar observed:"What does a man lack if his
wife is worthy? And what does he possess ifshe is lacking worth?" There is more
respect in the Hinduism for women andfor their role in society

Women must be honored and adorned by their father, brothers, husbands, and
brother-in-law who desire great good fortune. Where women, verilyare honored,
there the gods rejoice; where, however, they are not honored, there all sacred
rites prove fruitless. Where the female relations live ingrief, that family
soon perishes completely; where, however, they do not sufferfrom any grievance
that family always prospers.

Q11 What are theregulations regarding the  flowerofferings , using the left
hand,  huggingand embracing and pointing with the forefinger ?

A11FLOWER OFFERINGS: One does not sniff flowers picked for offeringto the
Deities; even the smell is for the Gods, not for us. Flowers that fallto the
ground should not be offered.

THELEFT HAND: InHindu culture the left hand is considered impure because it is
used (withwater) in the place of toilet paper for personal hygiene after
answering thecall of nature. Handing another person anything with the left hand
may beconsidered a subtle insult.

HUGGINGAND EMBRACING:Hugging and embracing is found in Hindu culture; but it is
restricted to closerelatives, Guru/disciples and associates that too in a
private place. InMahabharatha and Ramayana we find this very often. Hugging and
Embracingimproves pranic energy and this practice is not allowed with strangers.

POINTINGWITH THE FORE FINGER of the right hand or shaking the forefinger
inemphasis while talking is never done. This is because the right hand
possessesa powerful, aggressive pranic force, and an energy that moves the
forces of theworld. Pointing the index finger channels that force into a single
stream. Theharshness of this energy would be severely felt in the nerve system
of therecipient.
