Q1 What is the lgegend behindvellai pillayar?

A1 Refer Palazhi manthanstory…The churning staff, Mount Meru, gradually sank
down, making further churning impossible. The devas realised that theyhad not
worshipped Lord Vinayaka, the God of Success.

Theywanted to appease Vinayaka for attaining their desires; but the problem was
howto get a Vinayaka in the Milky Ocean. To overcome this difficulty,
theycollected the foam caused by the great churning of the ocean and compressed
itto make an idol of Lord Vinayaka. They did so and propitiated him. Then
onlycould they get the pot of nectar after further churning.

Vinayaka made of this whitefoam is known as Vellai Pillaiar (Vellai means white
and Pillaiar, Vinayaka.).

This isa very rare color for Vinayaka, probably the only instance.

A13  A prince of this part of the country had adaughter. She was very beautiful
to look at, but there was a bodily deformity. The girl had three breasts

This unusual addition made the beautiful girlugly. Her father, the ruler of
the place, being anxious about her future, prayed to God for help.

God heardhis prayers and declared that as soon as his daughter met her
ordained husband, her extra breastwould disappear.

When shecame of age, her father sent her with royal attendants to discover
where herhusband was. After visiting many villages, towns and cities, her
palanquinarrived at the spot where we now find the temple of Soundara-
rajaswamy. Nagaraja was doingpenace here.

Q14 Every body would have heard of Tirukkadayur-temple. Whatare the special
attributes of the temple?

A14 Tirukkadayur-The temple is of hugemeasurement, probably one of the best in
the South, both for sculptural andartistic beauty. Avisit to it is considered
to be equal to the performance of 100 AshwamedhaYagas (Horse sacrifices). So
sacred is the place

All men are subject to death. LordSiva punished Yama Dharmaraja, who is the
custodian of the life-chart of eachman, at this place for his indiscreet
action. It is believed that whoever visits this temple may getrid of the
torments of Yama Dharmaraja, which invariably awaiteverybody after death.

Lord Brahma wanted Jnana-Upadesam.He prayed to God. The Lord gave him some
Vilva seeds and told him that he mightsow the seeds anywhere he liked and, if
they sprouted, then the Lord wouldappear there and give him jnana- upadesam.
Brahma tried it at Tiruvengadu and other places, butcould not succeed till he
came to Tirukkadaiyur.

At Tirukkadaiyur, immediately onsowing the seeds, the Vilva trees grew like a
forest. Then the Lord appearedand imparted wisdom. Sothe Lord is known as
Vilvavaneswarar and this place is also known asVilvavanam or forest of vilvam.

It is said that at this place theLord granted Santana Bhagyam (fortune of
having a son) to Mrikandu Maharshiafter his long penance, and Markandeya was
born

ReferMarkandeya story…. Markandeya used to worship Godby bathing at the Ganges
at Banaras and bringing the water for abhishekam tothe Lord. Banaras being far
away, an underground passage was created from thetemple to the Ganges. Evenif
the water is brought from Banaras, it will not be used here

At the time when Markandeya was todie he was clasping the Sivalingam of
Tirukkadaiyur. Yama threw the noose forcatching hold of Markandeya, which
encircled the Sivalingam also. Siva gotannoyed, and assuming the Samhara-
swarupam with trident in hand, killed Yama.

The mark of this clasp is visible, together with the mark of the rope of Yama,
which tied both Markandeya and theLinga. As Yama was dead, there was none to
bring about the death ofthe persons inhabiting the earth. Life prolonged with
the continuous creation

Seeing the presence of Brahma andVishnu, Siva appeared withfour hands and
touched the body of Yama with his trident and brought back lifeto the dead
body. Yama got up as if from a slumber.

As Yama was vanquished for hisindiscreet action and again brought back to life
at the request of the Devas, Siva is called Mrityumjaya-He whovanquished Death.

This is a place frequently visited by peoplewho pray for longevity. People in
the temple premises celebrate Shashtiabda-poorti (60th birthday) and people in
the temple premises celebrateSatabhishekam (80th birthday) functions.
