CURTAIN AND SCREEN

Respected friends,

Most of the temples in Tamilnadu have a curtain infront of the sanctum.
Normally it is kept to one side.  For pooja, Nivedyam etc. the curtain is
pulledfully instead of closing the door of sanctum. But I have not seen the
curtain arrangement in Kerala temples. Theentrance door is 95% closed for
poojas and Nivedyams.

This curtain cloth is periodically replaced with awashed one, while the dirty
one is given for washing in Tamilnadu temples. These curtain clothes may be
either white or white with the print of deity onit.

Normally curtain cloth might be medium thick. Mostlywindows are provided with
curtain cloth in homes. Sometimes inner room doorsalso. Though opened, for
privacy it was/is provided.

According tovasthu, entrance door must not have curtain. But small homes may
have only one room, a hall andkitchen. There hall door may be opening   to
outside. In such homes also I have seencurtain before the hall door. Some
elders may be relaxing in hall.

A screen is provided for different purposes. We cansee screens in drama stages,
hospitals, theatres etc. A look in to differenttypes of screens and curtains
etc.

Sincerely,

Gopalakrishnan 18-12-2021
