Today I was returning after purchasing a refill pack of boostfrom provision stores. The pack was different from normal carton, in the formof a small pouch. I gave to my wife to fill in the plastic boost tin. Mythinking went to filling and refilling. The outcome is this write up. Sincerely, Gopalakrishnan 25-12-2021. 1. Funnel and fillingliquids in bottles. Earlier days Kerosene was stored in bottles and it wastransferred to lamps and stoves using metal funnel. In shops also kerosene waspoured to bottles using large metal funnel. Later spare Engine oil tins frompetrol bunks could be obtained from tin shops and kerosene was stored in it.Fear of breakage of glass bottles disappeared. Most of the oils were stored and kept in transparent glass bottles.Now oils come in plastic bottles as well as refill packs. Refill packs arepriced considerably low. So most purchase refill oil packs and fill in the oldbottle. New bottles are obtained only when the bottle becomes old. 2. Solid items andstoring in bottles In Olden days items like Horlicks came in glass bottles.After use the spare bottles were used for keeping oil, powders, spices etc.Even after Horlicks bottles changed to plastic, still it was continued. 3. Appearance of plasticbottles With the appearance of plastic bottles for storage in shops,most of the kitchen items are stored in them. However women always want change,they might change storing items to stainless steel containers, then to plasticcontainers, again change to colour plastic containers, there is no end forchanges. As read from one Sujatha’swriting before years, by the time husband search and found coffee powder, water boilingin the saucepan would have evaporated most, if wife was absent for one day fromthe home. Now convenient size plastic bottles are available for storingdifferent items. Now most of the powdered maslala items, parippu poti, sambarpoti etc. comes in packs. They also sometimescome in bottles for convenient storage. 4. Ink filling On those days large ink bottle was purchased and filled andgiven to all children writing with pen, in small bottles by parents. Expertstudents could fill ink from small bottle to pen without ink filler when theink was only half/quarter of capacity of bottle. Earlier ink bottles came inglass bottles, later in plastic bottles. Later the plastic bottles itself camewith a cap fitted with a filler. Just pressing the bottle, ink would come fromfiller and could fill in the pen. 5. Ball point pens andrefills At one time refills came with ball point pens. Once the inkfilled in the plastic tube was exhausted, the refill could be inserted removingthe top cap of the ball pen and used. As ball point pens started manufacturing by manycompanies, its price came down. Refills cost and pen cost became same. Now refillsare not available. Now ball point pens are available from Rs 05-00 to Rs 70-00.Most purchase pens costing around Rs 20-00. At the time ball point pensappeared, refill meant ball point pen refill in stationary shops. 6 Other refills fromsupermarkets Instant coffee is costly and mostly it comes in glasscontainers. Refill pack is available now and price is only about 75%. Mostpurchase refill pack and transfer to bottle. Instant coffee is used mostly whenguests come suddenly without intimation. Shaving sets with one side blade comes with spare bladeswhich is also a type of refill. Old blade can be removed easily and new oneinserted. 99% of biscuits and cookies come in tight paper packs. Inhomes they are immediately transferred to air tight containers. Especially fordiabetics, blood sugar can come down sometimes without reason, keeping a small tin of sweet biscuitsclose to them is best. Just eating 4-5 biscuits and drinking water, blood sugarwill rise up to normal level. 6. Refill ink ofcartridges. With computer printers, earlier printer cartridges had to beremoved and provided with a new one. Recently I read about original refill ink is also supplied torefill cartridge by HP company. 7. Insulin refills Earlier insulin pen came as use and throw type. Cost washigh. Now the same companies have manufactured pens in which refills units canbe easily inserted and when exhausted new refill can be inserted.Similarly needles can be replaced easily. Though still costly, gooddifference in price is there for refill units. During travel most use and throwpen for convenience. 8. RO system paper filters With the present RO systems replacement of paper filters arevery easy and most companies give to homes spare filters and show how toreplace units. This avoids their coming for just replacing filters. 9. Detergent powder refill backs Though detergent powder comes in refill cartons/ plastic pouches,detergent liquid has not come in pouches so far.
