GRILL WORKS Dear friends,
Today my posting is about the grill works in a home.When I joined duty in 1967as junior engineer in Ranipet, it was in a newly constructed building with gateand windows fitted with grill works. At that period grill work was not commonin Kerala. Though my office had grill works, most new homes had no grill works atthat time. Memories of the grill work in windows, gates and front compound wall,terrace etc. came to me. Nostalgic lookin to grill works. Sincerely, Gopalakrishnan 16-1-22. 1Grill material Today window grills are generally made of steel i.e.Bright Steel or Mild Steel (MS) because of its durability and sturdiness.Bright steel grills have become a fad for modern home windows and balconies. 2. Grill work In the lathe, different designs are drawn and kept ina note for the grill work in windows, gates etc. One can select the desiredone. Mostly for all designs irrespective of labour standard rate is told forthe finished work per kg.In a grill work grill rods of different thickness are cut and weld as required. Eitherthe grill man or engineer gives specifications. Once the grill is made, it cannot be resized.It is very difficult to remove the welding by thieves. Especially in the gatedesign, flower type welding is done in specific locations which not only givesbeauty, but adds obstruction also for animals squeezing through the frame work.Present day grill gates have spikes provision at the top. Grill works are heavy. 3 Screwing ofgrill work Normally the window frame work is completed afterinserting grill in to it. Some construction it so happens, window wooden frameis fitted and grill work tight with inner side of wood work frame is inserted and screwedwith lengthy screws. 4. Mufflingscrew head. After inserting the grill work in to frame and screwsfitted, to avoid unscrewing the screwing head is muffled/ damaged. For somemore security, by suitable lathing, screws head will go in to grill frame andwhen screwed, it will be in plane with grill frame and screw head punctured andwaxed so that screwing may not be visible. In many flats we can see this method of grill fitting.In many flats there is only window pane in flats. I do not know why the builderprovides the widow so. Many fit grill frame screwed to window after purchasing. 5. Insertingthe grill to window frame. In this case the outer frame is provided withprotrusions at least 2 numbers at top and two numbers at bottom and 4 numberson both sides. While the window frame is assembled, cuttings are made to insertthe protrusion of grill work and with grill the frame work is assembled. Thoughone is more happy seeing protrusion going in to frame, caring the wood, protrusion mayenter maximum one Inch only in to the frame. Special grill work isdone to the frames of windows in kitchen so that cat may not squeeze in to. 6 Grill frame incompound wall Above the front side compound wall brick work, forattraction than obstruction grill frame is fixed. The frame work protrusions onthree sides are inserted in to brick work and plastered. 7. Grill workdoors. In the home in addition to the sturdy door opening to outsidegrill door is also provided, which is locked using a padlock. Padlock rod willenter in to a GI pipe hole fixed in the building wall for about 3 inches. 8. Cleaning ofgrill work. While Painting usually different colour paints areused for grill work for beauty. Using dry and wet cloth or using brushescleaning is done once a month. If not dust might settle which require toughcleaning. Normally bottom half of the grill work become dirtier. 9. Stair casesand artwork in terrace in place of parapet wall. Normally for staircase in the outside grill work fittedto GI Pipe is provided as support frame. Bottom is fitted to the steps itself.
