Q1 What is theinteresting story of White Rishaba in vadakkumnatha temple?

A1 There is another amusing story about the origin of the white rishabhaor bull
at the main entrance to the nalambalam from the west.

Once a Young and strikingly hand-some saint came to the temple. He saton the
mandapam, in front of the sanctum and meditated for hours together.

He disappeared the moment thetemple was closed and appeared again when the same
was reopened. He was so attractive that many people especiallywomen who came to
worship stood and stared at him.

After a few months the children born toseveral women in this place resembled
the saint. The men became angry at thisand wanted to drive him away.

The saint understoodthis. So he brought skilled artisans from Tamil Nadu and
had a beautiful bullmade and installed it at the entrance to the temple.

Now several cows grazing in thetemple yard came near the bull and stood as
though admiring the beauty of thebull. The newly born calves also had
resemblance to this bull.

It was then that the people realized that onwhichever object pregnant women
concentrated during their pregnancy the childwould resemble that object.

Q2What is Brahma and Rengavimanam story connected with Trichy Srirangam?

A2Once Brahma was doing a penace to get appraised by Lord Vishnu in
Rengavimanam.Devas do not like it . Theyattempted to spoil the penance by
deputing Maninatha and the celestial nymphsto distract his attention

Ranganathaappeared and  consoled Brahma byexpressing his desire to go to
Ayodhya where he would be worshipped by the descendant of theSolar dynasty for
four yugas, and at the end of the fourth yuga he would go to the kingdom of the
Cholasin the South, on the banks of the Kaveri, where he would stay for 700
years.

At theend, of this period he would return to
Brahmaloka. Brahma was directed to part with the Ranga Vimanam to Ikshwaku.

AccordinglyBrahma placed the Ranga Vimanam on the shoulders of Garuda who
delivered it toIkshwaku at Ayodhya. Ikshwaku erected a big temple in between
the rivers Sarayu and Dhamasu, and installed the Ranga Vimanam therein.

Ceremonial rites and ritualswent on for ages. Ikshvaku’s sonDasharatha ruled
the country in the Tretayuga and he, being childless, performed a great
sacrifice,Putrakameshti Yaga, and got four sons.

Duringthe performance of the great Yaga all the celebrated kings of the
neighboringcountries attended the function. Among them, Dharma Varma, a Chola
prince,was also present.

After visiting the Ranga Vimanam, he desiredto have it in his own country on
the banks of the Kaveri.

On return from Ayodhya, King Dharma varma  started a severe penance to get the
RangaVimanam in his country.

As Vibhishana helped Rama toannihilate the demon Ravana, his service was the
greatest and he was presented with thehighest gift namely Ranga Vimanam.

Vibhishanakept the Ranga Vimanam on the bank and had his holy bath in the river
Kaveriand started worshipping the Ranga Vimanam. He stayed there for the day at
therequest of the Chola king and wanted to start next morning to perform the,
AdiBrahmotsava at his own palace inLanka.

The Chola king and the Rishis presentrequested Vibhishana to perform the Adi
Brahmotsava there itself. Vibhishana agreed to this request and in greatpomp
the Adi Brahmotsava was performed on the banks of River Kaveri.

Incommemoration of this incident, the Brahmotsava is performed on the day of
thefull moon in the month of Panguni, Uttaram day. When the celebrations
wereover, Vibhishana started to carry the Ranga Vimanam to his kingdom, Lanka.

To his utter dismay, he foundthat the Vimanam wouldnot move. This must have
causedalmost heartbreak to Vibhishana who wet on praying to Lord Ranganatha to
savehim from the situation.

Ranganatha advised him that he (the Lord)desired to stay there for some time,
looking towards South, to bless an including Vibhishana and Lanka, andasked
Vibhishana to go back to his principality.

The desire of Dharma Varma, the Chola prince, was fulfilled in thismiraculous
way. He started constructing a gigantic structure forinstalling the Ranga
Vimanam. Dharma Varma worshipped the Ranga Vimanam for along time and attained
salvation.

Q3 What is Nanda chola incidentrelated to Sriranganatha swamy?

A3 Anotherinteresting incident happened during the period of Nanda Chola.

Nanda Chola was childless. He started penance for getting it so happenedthat he
once found in his lily pond a heavenly child floating on a lotus. Theindication
was quite enough for Nanda Chola for rearing the child as his ownand a gift
from God Almighty. Because he found the child lying on the petals ofa lotus
flower, shenamed Kamalavalli.

When Kamalavalli, theheaven-born daughter of Nanda Chola, was taken inside the
sanctum sanctorum, she merged with Lord Ranganatha in a blaze of light.

Tocommemorate the marriage of his daughter, Nanda Chola constructed two
temples, one for Kamalavalli his heavenly daughter and the other for Alagiya
Manavala(charming bridegroom), at his capital, Uraiyur. The temples are still
existing.

Srirangam is spoken of as aparadise on earth (Bhoolokavaikuntham). Somefestival
or other is taking place throughout the year. The idol of Ranganathais very
impressive and one who worships Him gets all his desires fulfilled andattains
moksha.

Abhishekam is being done tothe deity daily with Kaveri water brought in a
silver vessel placed on theDevasthanam elephant in a procession accom-panied by
pipers.

Learned Brahmins chant Vedas and Mantras whenpujas and abhishekams are
performed.

Srirangamis considered as the capital of vaishnavas. To add to its pride this
temple hasthe tallest temple tower in the World, the Rajagopuram of this temple
was builtob 1983 and its 236ft tall.

Q4 What are thespecial attributes of Tiruvanaikkavil?

A4 Thiruvanaikoil and Srirangam are in the banks of riverCauvery. Literally
these two places form an island, surrounded by river Cauvery and river Coleroon.

Asthis temple represents water this is also called as 'Appu sthalam' and the
Shivalinga ('Swami')here is called as 'Appu Linga'.Even today you can see water
oozing out near the Shivalinga idol in the temple.

ParvathiDevi once  made a Lingam out of water of river Cauvery(also called as
river 'Ponni')under the 'Venn Naaval' tree (the Venn Naavaltree on top of the
saint Jambu) and commenced her worship. So, the Lingam is known as 'Appu
Lingam' (Water Lingam).

Chola King “Ko Chengot Cholan”(He is also called as Chenkannan)constructed this
temple in1st Century B.C

. Ko ChengotChola had built 70 other Shiva temples all over Tamil Nadu and he
is one amongthe 63 “Nayannmars”(Holy Saivite saints).

Thiruvanaikoil temple was built according to 'Saiva Aagama Sasthra'. According
to Saiva Agamam, the temple reflects the humanbody and the idol of Lord Shiva
is considered as the soul. Many other kings like Pandiyas and Nayakars of
Madurai later renovated thistemple.

Thereare many interesting legends in this temple. When the king “Thirruneetru
Sundara Pandiyan” was constructing the 5thPraharam wall on the East Side, he
was running out of money to pay tothe laborers for the next day of work.

On that night in the Kings dream Lord Shivaasked him to continue the work.  As
per the Lords wish the King continuedthe construction and at the end of that
day a Sanyasi (saint) came there and he gave thelaborers pinches of sacred ash

That sacred ash turned into gold equivalent to the work done by them. Thenonly
the King and others came to know that the Sanyasi is none other than theLord
himself. Because ofthis instance the East Side praharam is known as “Vibhoothi”
(sacred ash) praharam.

Adjacent to Lord Muruga is the Sannadhi forLord Sanishwara (Saniswarar –
Saturn) with Neela devi.

Thiruvanaikoil is one of thevery few temples where you can find a separate
sannadhi for Sanniswarar that towith the goddess Neela devi.
