VERY OLD ELECTRICAL ITEMS PART 3 Continued from part 2
18 Air conditioner connection sockets Before the availabilityof circuit breakers the windowair-conditioner units were installed using quality fibre 15 ampssocket with switch. Separate wiring was done with 14 gauge insulated copper wireto the socket. Normally 1.5 ton AC was used in homes in bed room or hall.Higher current (12 amps) is drawn while starting compressor. Running current is about 8amps. Without going tocalculations, if an Air conditioner unit (of 1.5 ton capacity) is installed andused during night from 9 PM to 6 AM, about 10 electrical units would beconsumed and approximately every day cost must be around Rs. 50-00. This is same with split AC also. Window AC is almostobsolete. Most haveinstalled split AC by the time in homes. On those days it was common to see thesocket pin connecting phase becomes burnt due to drawing of high current. Periodically it was replaced. Now split AC is used. Thecurrent is supplied through a 20 amps circuit breaker to the porcelain socket and highquality 20 amps wire is used from AC to the 3 pin plug point. If the pin is notproperly pressed onecould smell rubber/fibre burning smell of the wire used. In additionanother circuit breaker is provided in the distribution panel. 19 Importance of capacitors in the AC outdoor unit. This point is added here for reasons for higher currentchargesappearing in electricity board bill. The starting capacitoris small in size starts the AC unit. The running capacitor is above the size ofa large glass tumbler starts and stops the compressor. If either of them isfaulty, AC unit will not function. If they are weak- more current is drawn 20 Radio receiver and TV About Radioreceivers I had to write earlier. However I include here. By 1965 radios becamecommon in most homes. Murphyand Philips were the leaders in the field. The earliest types ofradios were valve type. Later version of radios used transistor circuits. Hearingsongs from radio was entertainment and news broadcast gave state news. Newspaperand radio receiver went hand in hand. Radio receivers require antenna. Tillabout 1975 we had to pay licencefee to keep radio and it was paid in post office. Post office issuedlicence book. Radios/transistor radios were seized by Licence inspectors for notpaying licence fee on those days!! Radio is almostobsolete except FM radios in cars and in remote villages in India. Dawn of TV receiver made the downfall of radio. Even in 1991’s I had a keltron transistor radio. The powerconsumption for picture tube, LCD, LED, plasma or android TV is low. Earlier TVs hadblack and white picture tubes. Colour picture tubes came later. The picturetubes were earlier oval and later flat. Many homes have TV receivers of colourpicture tube in perfect working condition even now. I am having a SONY TV in perfect workingcondition and used in Guest room. When the TVappeared there was only terrestrial transmission by Doordarshan. Private TVoperators were not there. Now also Doordarshan telecasts are watched by manyfor informative programmes. 21 Cable TV Earlier there was onlyterrestrial transmission and we had installed antennas on building top toreceive signals. Later cable TV came. Believe it or not Asianet was a cable TVdistributor in the beginning. I was having their cable TV. TV unitswere upgraded to receive more channels. On those days TVs came with remote toswitch on and switch off and to increase or decrease volume and brightness. 21a. TV card in computer. During 2000’scomputers came with spare position to keep additional cards. I felt I must haveit, and installed it in my HP computer in a spare card’s position. I took a separateconnection from Asia net to the TV. It functioned well. I could spare the TV tomy wife to watch whatever she desired and I used to see news etc. through mylaptop. 21b Cable TV A new unit called channel converter waskept over top and cable TV was connected to it. Using a remote for channelconverter, channels were changed. On those days most talked about TV serials, news readers etc. TV programmes were for limited time from early morning 6AM to10 PM. Electrical wiring was made to a low level toconveniently connect TV in a showcase. A show case in hall was common on thosedays. Now too in most homes TV isprovided in hall. Some kept TV in dining halls also. More than one TV was commoneven in yester years since even in the same home people’s desired separate programme. Cables to homes aredrawn in many areas through separate poles, most areas tying to electric poles. New TVs came with remote to changechannels also. If you observe the TV remote of the present days, you can seeprovision to change channels in it. 22 Set up box Cable TV operatorscame with set up box and remote. Even with private channels like Asia net andSun TV, for some period we continued with cable TV with setup box. 23. VCR, VCP At one time theywere VIPs with TV.VCR was more costly than VCP. VCP was a cassette player. VCR could record TVprogrammes. There were cassette shops renting cine films recorded. In 1997’smarriage programmes were recorded in cassette and were seen through TV later.Later recording in CD (compact Disc) also started. CD and cassette continuedtogether for a long time. Now VCR and VCPshave become almost obsolete in India. I will continue in next part. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
