Q1 Is it healthy to eat potato skin? A1 Lucia Garcia Worked atHospitals Sat Potatoes are considered to be one of the greatest foods in the world dueto their high nutritional value and low price. Some surveys have found that in Russia, Bulgaria, Ecuador and othercountries, there are several famous "Village of Longevity", wherepeople's staple food is potatoes. Potatoes are rich in starch, vitamin C, vitamin A, B vitamins, dietaryfiber, pantothenic acid, and minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The vitamin content of potatoes is 2.5 times that of carrots, 3.3 timesthat of Chinese cabbage, 4.2 times that of tomatoes, and the content of vitaminC is the highest in vegetables. Studies have shown that thevitamin content of potato skins is as high as 80%, which is much higher thanthat of potatoes. Potato skin contain solanine which is aglycoalkaloid, also a toxic substance in potatoes. However, the solanine contentof potatoes is negligible. Theexperimental data shows that 100 grams of potatoes with skin contain only 0.025grams of solanine. An adult weighing 60 kg eats 15 kg of potatoes with the skin on forseveral days. Ingested solanine will harm his body. However, no one can eat 15 kilograms of potatoes. Therefore, potatoes are still quite safe, as long as you don't eat potatoes with the skinon in large quantities over a long period of time. Q2 Does an armored cable need to be grounded? A2 Gopala Krishnan, formerAssistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004) Answeredjust now Once it was so in telecom department in India. In addition marking brickswere laid above it. On earlier days there were rare cables used by electricitydepartment. Now telecom department lay PVC cables , in many places through PVCducts. Electricity cables are simply laid at depth as I have observed. Theyhave thick PVC sheath. Q3 Is it safe to use a water heater, while the power isswitched on? A3 Gopala Krishnan, formerAssistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom(1966-2004)Answered just now There is a saying- Prevention is better than cure. In my opinion, electronic and electrical items canfail at any time. So keepthe water heater switch outside. Ensure it is switched off before entering bathroom. Place arubber mat or rubberized coir matter before the Heater switch.Exceptionally aged may fail to keep 100% damp the finger while switch isoperated. Better follow safety measures. 2nd answer- PradeepRathi, Water HeatingConsultant from past 13 yearsAnswered May 17, 2018 Yes - If your heater is of areliable brand. Also if you have good earthing arrangement, you are safe. The electricity does not touch the water at all. Current does not passthrough Steel pipes what you see in an heater. That is covering for theelectrical coil/element inside through which current passes and is wellinsulated. Only if the coil punctures and the current leaks, you are at risk. But if your earthing is good, the leakage current will pass to earth. Moreover if you have right ELCBinstalled, it should trip as soon this leakage happens. 3rd answer-KiranPatil, Electronics engineer AnsweredMar 4, 2015 Now a days, most water heaters have advanced features like automatic turnoff, precise temperature control etc so they are more safe to use while they are ON but you should take care about earthing of waterheater to avoid shocks. Make surethat you have proper earthing. Also water heaters draws more current comparedto other appliances so avoid switching it using wet hands or frequently turningon and off. Also make sure that the socket you are using to plug in the heaterhas specified current rating for heater. 4th answer- VikrantKembhavi, Bibliophile, World-Music Enthusiast, Ambivert, Grammar Nazi! Answered Mar 4, 2015 Yes, make sure that you electric heater has properearthing. Avoid touching its switches with damp hands, No. Noteven slightly damp. Use awooden ruler for switches if you wish. For CNG-run water heaters, take extra care or else the extremely hotwater may scald your skin. Keep the water flow at an optimum level so that much steam does not formwhile heating. Q4 How do I know if my air conditioner needs a gas top up? A4 Gopala Krishnan, formerAssistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004) Answeredjust now Very simple. If it is hot air it is sure no gas in compressor.Call AC technician of the company. He would fill gas, check for leak, andcollect correct charges for gas. About Rs 2000–00 for 1.5 ton AC compressor. Q5 How long do apartment buildings last? A5 Steven Haddock Studiedat York University (Canada)Sat There really isn’t a set lifespan. Lots of luxury New York City apartments were built in the1920s and still work great. I have a lot of small 1930s eraapartment buildings in my neighbourhood and they’re all in great shape andfully occupied. In my old neighbourhood, the 1950s era apartment buildings nearwhere I lived are probably in better shape now than in the 1960s when I visitedthem. 2nd answer- “The Century”, Central Park West, Manhattan.Finished in 1931. It’s really a matter ofmaintenance. The only really problematic system is the elevators - they pretty much have to be fully replaced every20–25 years. Pretty much everything else that can break can be replaced aswell. Q6 Can the police find out all our registered mobile numbersfrom our Aadhaar number? A6 KanthaswamyBalasubramaniam Lawyer Sat Nopes .Under the Present Law:- The Aadhar Number contained in the UIDAI Database contains only EightRecords per Person A. Name B. Date of Birth C. Biometric 1 (Fingerprint) D. Biometric2(Iris) E. Address F. RegisteredPhone Number (Only 1 Number) G. Fathers Name H. Image of the Person.Thatsall!!!! And No Cop can access this. Not even the DGP of a State. The Only person who can access these details is a Home Secretary of aState or Centre And he has to put the information in writing and get an Authorizationfrom the Head of UIDAI So unless its a Search for Bin Laden - its unlikely to use this route So you may ask the Question - How does UIDAI tell us which bank accountis linked to our Aadhar? The Answer is - its not the Aadhar Database at all. When you enter your Aadhar details and authenticate it, the System goesto the NPCI Database, searches using a CSCT Algorithm (Whatever it is) for yourAadhar Number and fetches the relevant details like Mapped Account etc. So lets say if the Cop knows your Aadhar number, can he ask Airtel - Showme all the phone numbers linked to this Aadhar card? Sure But Airtel cannot Because they dont have your Aadhar number in theirdatabase They only have a Link in their records which was created when youauthenticated your Aadhar Number using OTP Same for a Bank. They can search by Account Number but they cannot searchby Aadhar Number because as per law their database only has the Link to NPCIrather than the Actual Aadhar Number. (Finding out how many Accounts you haveusing the Aadhar number) And their CBS will simply show YES rather than the Aadhar Number initself So its next to impossible toget your details based on just your Aadhar Number unless maybe Modi himself gave the orders or maybe not even then. Q7 What are some things about living in Chennai that no onetalks about? A7 Sujatha Viswanathan Fri I am from Chennai. This answer is for non-Chennaiites. Here goes! Tamil, Tamil and more Tamil : You may find some working class people whospeak broken English. Otherwise, it is Tamil everywhere. Hindi is absolutelynot welcome here. Temples everywhere : Even treesare not spared. A generousswipe of turmeric at the base of the tree with red dots or streaks, and Voila, you make it sacred. Put an idol of Ganesha and you have a roadside temple. Also, plenty of roadside churches and mosques. Marina Beach sojourn : Thesecond longest urban beach inthe world is an iconic landmark not just for its obvious beach vibes, but formemorials of TN’s political elite and a site for protests. My personal grouseis that the maintenance of the beach has and will always remain subpar. ECR(East Coast Road) beaches are much cleaner and better maintained. Infamous auto drivers: Withnegligible exceptions, they arerude and will not hesitate to rip you off if you are not careful. Masters atgiving plenty of unsolicited advice! Hot. hotter and sweaty : Being on the coast and close to the equator, Chennai gets sweltering hot fromMarch to July. December is nice though. Also, insane amountsof milk as “abhishekham” are poured on these for good luck. Q8 Why aren't widows allowed to remarry in Hinduism? A8 Mahi Soni Exploringvarious vedas and puranas Thu Hinduism doesn't prohibit women to remarry. There are examples of widow remarriage but we haveonly few of them. The reason behind this is, most ofthe widows used Niyoga rather than remarrying again. A closerelative, especially brother-in-law was the most suitable person for this. Infact if a widow wanted tomarry, then also her brother in law was always the first choice. Mahabharata, XIII, 12, 19 नारी तु पत्य भावे वै देवरं कृणुते पतिम् If a woman loses her husband, she marries her brother-in-law. In Rig veda a widow and her brother in law are compared to husband andwife. X, 40, 2- “Where are you, Aśvins, by night? Where are you by day? Wheredo you sojourn? Where do youdwell? Who brings you into his presence in the sameplural ce (of sacrifice) as on her couch a widow (brings) her husband'sbrother, as a woman (brings) her husband (to her).” In Atharva veda, we find arefrence to a woman remarriage. Here it's not explicitly mentioned whether it was the brother-in-law ornot so widow marriages outside the family used to take place. XI, 5, 27–28 ~ When she who hath been wedded finds a second husbandafterward, The twain shall not be parted if they give the Goat Panchaud- ana. One world with the re-wedded wifebecomes the second hus- band's home. Interestingly, the next lines (verse 29–30) talk about the uniting of thenew couple in heaven. The Agni Purana summarises it, Agni Purana 154.4-7 “Women areallowed to have another husband in the following five adversaries;- (the first husband) is lost, dead, has become anascetic, impotent or fallen morally. If the husband is dead, she should begiven to the brother of the deceased. In the absence of brother, she should begiven to anyone as one wished” Also the Garuda Purana, GarudaPurana 1.107.28 “In case of disappearance or death or renunciation or impotentor lost caste status of her husband, in these five cases a woman is allowed totake another husband.” The purpose of remarriage was to get heirs if the widow was childless.Niyoga was also to beget children on the widow but it doesn't mean it was notallowed for a widow who had living children. Many people quote Manu's statement. Manusmriti 9.175~ In case shebe still a virgin, or having gone away comes back,—she is fit to undergore-marriage with her second husband. Manu puts this condition that the widow should be a virgin but otherverses do not mention anything like this. So I am gonna pretend I didn't seethat. In Vashistha Dharmasūtra, Vasishtha gives some instances in which ahusband is considered dead, and a woman whether she is widow or not, haschildren or not, nothing like this is mentioned, and he extends this permissionto all ladies. XVII, 77. If for reasonsconnected with spiritual or with money matters she be unwilling to leave herhome, she must act in the same manner as if (her husband were) dead. 78. In this manner a wife ofthe Brāhmaṇa caste who has issue (shall wait) five years, and one who has no issue, four years; a wife of the Kṣatriya caste who has issue, five years, and one whohas no issue, three years; a wife of the Vaiśya caste who has issue, fouryears, and one who has no issue, two years; a wife of the Śūdra caste who hasissue, three years, and one who has no issue, one year. In Nāradasmriti (XII, 97), Nārada holds the same view. Parāshara andKautilya concur with this view. So according to Dharmasūtras (c. 400 B.C. to c. 100 A.D.) the death ofhusband is not necessary for remarriage. The Adhyatma Ramayana declares Sugriva acquires Tāra after her husbandVāli died.. In Mahabharata, the marriage of Ulupi and Arjuna is an example ofwidow remarriage. The famous emperor Chandragupta Vikramāditya (c. 374–414 A.D.) married his elder's brother wife after the death of her husband. Kumārgupta,a son of this union became an heir to Gupta empire. As compared to other varnas, widow remarriage was less popular popularamong the Brahmanas. From about 600 A.D. the prejudice against widow remarriagebecome deeper and deeper. Smriti writes started condemning them vehementlythough earlier texts allow widow remarriage.
