of elephant. With respect to young girls, general beautyas well as walking like
an elephant is considered beautiful.

7. ELEPHANTS ANDTEMPLES (KERALA AND TAMILNADU)

Many temples in Kerala have their own Elephant/Elephants. During festivals the
temple elephant would be the most prominent. Many temples get elephants as an
offering by devotees. Most important amongthem is Guruvayur. At one time
offering of elephants was stopped temporarily dueto vast number of elephants in
the elephant sanctuary at Punnathurkkotta.

In front of most temples in Kerala there is aprominent area called “Aana
kottil” where decorated elephants are brought oneby one. The small deity is
carried on the most prominent elephant forezhunnllippu (Circumambulation around
the temple). At the end of ezhunnallippuin the evening for the performance of

 9. BIOLOGICALINFORMATION.
In some postingabout the elephants, I read, the testicles not seen outside in
male elephantare at head. Like me many would have read so. Mr. Venkatraman
corrected me- IT IS INSIDE IN THE HIND LEG PORTION. Similarly ifan elephant
keep its ear folded, it is felt in must.

Earlier the domesticated she elephants earlier neverused to get pregnant. But
in recent years she elephants, kept in the company ofmale elephants, get
pregnant, though not very frequently. In Northeasternstates their domestication
is more and they mate elephants and also help indelivery of calf.

 10. AANAYUTTU

During a special period for about a month, elephantsare made to rest and given
medicinal foods. Domesticated elephants are broughtin batches and fed. The
practice is in Kerala and Tamilnadu.

The sensitive partscalled “Marmam”are known to elephant physicians and some
of them are told to mahouts.

11. AANA CHANDA

There is an annual market period to sell and purchaseelephants in the north
near Jaipur. Many elephants in the south now arepurchased and brought from
there. They are taught commands in Malayalam afterthey are brought here.

12. SAYINGSCONNECTED WITH ELEPHANTS

These are few sayings connected with elephants.

1 AAaneyavangan Kasundu, thotti vangan kasilla( There is money to purchase an
elephant, but  there is no money to  purchase  hook.

Unless hook  isnot  there mahout cannot  control the elephant. The saying means
there must be reserves for added essential  expenditures after spending large
amount for awork.   While money is spent on purchasing of clothes for dresses,
reserve money must therefor STITCHING  them also.

2. AAnaikkueappozum ponnuvila(Elephant has value whether alive or dead

Another one is whether an elephant is alive or dead,it is wealth. While alive
by deploying in works and after death from it’s bodyparts like ivory.

3. Aaanaye petikkanam, Aaana pindathinaepedikkano? (One has to fear an
elephant, does to fear ofelephant’s dung?)

The saying is very oftenused to mean the activities of relatives and lower
grade subordinate staff ofbig officers- Some distant relatives of collector or
the dafedar pretending as if he is thedistrict collector.

4 Ammavan aanapuratthukeriyal, aninthiravantae pinnil thaznambundakumo? (If the
uncle knew to  climb on the elephant   and sit for long time, whether  his
nephew would have marks in his backof  longtime sitting ?)

The saying means to say,by  a relation, one person’s experience is
nottransferred. It has to be gained . If the father was a famous  writer, the
son can become a writer providedhe too shows interest in writing.

2.3 Aaana poyae pinnaevatiyum kondu natanntentha? ( What is the purpose served
by a mahout walkingwith his controlling stick, NOT HAVING THE ELEPHANT with
him).

Mainly it is talked ofsome government officers thinking they have some RESIDUAL
POWER - AFTER RETIREMENT. It is false.A former is aformer.

I recollect the words ofSri Vijakumar former chief secretary of Kerala
Government- IAS is a position holdingwhile in service.Afterwards he is an
ordinary man, one among others.
