Q1 Who all canperform sraddaha to a deceased person?

A1 If a particular dead person doesnot have any relative or a close person,
then it is the duty of the king to perform Shraddha for thatperson’.

1. It is mentioned that the daughter, wife, mother and daughter-in-law of the
deceased person have the authority toperform Shraddha.

Mynote- It is told in another context all can perform srardha to
jnathaAnjathapithrus.

Q2 On which day sraddha for a deceased parent to be done?

A2 Normally every year Shraddha shouldbe performed on the date of death of the
person (as per the Hindu calendar andnot as per the English calendar.)

If the date is not knownand only the month is known, then in that case the
shraddha can be performed on the newmoon day of that month.

Ifboth, the date as well as the month is unknown then the shraddha can
beperformed on the newmoon day of the Hindu calendar month of Magh
orMargashirsha.

Q3 An interesting question-Can we perform sraddha after midday?

A3 It is the ideal time to commence sradha after 1 PM!!!!

If the day is divided into 5 parts, then the fourth part is called the
‘Aparanha’period. This period is most appropriate for performing shraddha.

Consider  a day period of 12 hours 12/5=2.4 hours:.Three parts =2.4x3= 7.2

Day commence at 6 AM  :. 6+7.2= 13 hours 20 mts. Hence commencingsraddah after
13 hours is the best.

Q4 Is it good to donate items on Akshaya thrithiya day torelieve harms to
ancestors?

A4 Yes.The holy texts of Puranas say that,on the day of AkshayyaTrutiya one
should donate uncooked food (aamanna), a waterpot, a fan made of mint grass, an
umbrella, footwear etc. with the intension ofoffering them to the deceased
ancestors’ souls so that  the messengers of Lord Yama do not cause distress to
the ancestors’ souls.

When clothes and ornaments aredonated, the dark, brown eyed, cruel messengers
of Lord Yama having sharp andlong teeth do not cause distress to the deceased
ancestors’ souls.

Q5 Do Mahalaya sraddha is benovelent?

A5 If Mahalay Shraddhais performed for the deceased ancestors’ souls during
this fortnight, theyremain satisfied for the entire year.

What stanza  told inMahabharat about it gives the following Meaning:
Thehouseholder who does not perform shraddhaduring the period when the Sun is
in the Virgo sign, how will he earn money andbe gifted with a baby boy as he
would have enraged the deceased ancestors’souls?

The abode for deceased ancestors’ souls remains vacant tillthe Sun moves from
Virgo and Libra sign to the Scorpio sign.

The abode for deceased ancestors’ soulsremaining vacant during this period
implies that the deceased ancestors’ soulscome closer to their descendants for
blessing them and if Shraddha is not performed, they givecurse to their
descendants and return. Due to this it is important toperform Shraddhaduring
this period.

My note- I do not think pithrus will curse if at all they do not blesstheir
siblings

Q6 Which god is to be mediated duringGayathri japa along with Sandhhya vandan?
What is the importance of Sandhyavandan and Gayathri?

A6 We must meditate on Gayatri in themorning as Visnu personified, at noon as
Brahma personified and atdusk as Siva personified.

We findhypnotism useful in many ways and we talk of "hypnotic power". Gayatriis
the hypnoticmeans of liberating ourselves from worldly existence as well
asofcontrolling desire and realising the goal of birth.

Sandhyavandana must be performedproperly during right hours. During the
Mahabharata war, when water was not readilyavailable, the warriors give arghya
at the right time with dust as
substitute.

If a man has a high fever, peoplelooking after him must pour into hismouth the
water with which sandhyavandanahas been performed. Sandyavandana is indeed an
easy means to ensure your wellbeing. So long as there islife in you, you must
perform it.

Of all the forms in which Bhagavanmanifests himself that form in which he is
revealed as mother is most liked byus. The Vedas proclaim Gayatri to be such a
mother. This mantra is to be repeated only bymen. Women benefit from the men
performing the japa.

Similarly when the three varnaspractise
gayatri-japa all other jatis enjoy the benefit flowing from it. We may cease
toperform a rite if the fruits yielded by them are enjoyed exclusively by us.
Thoseentitled to Gayatri mantra are to regard themselves as trustees who have
tomutter it on behalf of others like women and the fourth varna who are not
entitled to it.

The benefit we derive from theGayatri mantra is the cleansing of the mind
(cittasuddhi). Even other mantrashave this ultimate purpose, but cittasuuddhi
is the direct result ofGayatri-japa.

My note- If women shouldnot recite Gayathri, how SIta used to
performsandhyavandanam? A natural doubt coming to my mind. Learnt readers may
respond.

Q7 When doMadhayanikka has tobe done?

A7 They mayperform the madhyahnika (the midday vandana) 2 hours 24 minutes
after sunrisethat is called "sangava kala".

My note- Sun rise id about 6.20 now. In that casemadhyannika period is by about
9.45 AM. Learnt readers may respond to thispoint. For that I haveadded this QA.

Q8 Inthe Gita, when the Lord does 'upadesa' to Arjuna, he (Arjuna) questions,
"Youhave been born to Vasudeva and Devaki. How then do you claim to have
done'upadesa' to Surya, Chandra?" ?

A8 The Lord then explains that He always 'was'rather 'IS'.

The Lordtells Arjuna that He (Lord) has taken innumerable births in the past
and wouldtake innumerable births in the future and He knew about all His
births.

Q9 What happen to a person who takes care ofhis family through questionable
means ?

A9 One whotakes care of his family through questionable means attains to the
hell. After undergoingsufferings of the hell he attains the birth of creatures
that are below thelevel of human birth. He passes each and every birth in the
order of creationand again attains to human body ('manushya sariira').

Q10 What is the benefit achieved by knowingthe Panchangam of the day?

A10. You smaranthithi by name;you get iswaryam.

Varam<somam, mangalam> ;lifetime increases. Spell nakshatram,< star of theday>
;papamvanishes.Say the yogam of the day;rogam <diceases > get lost.Karanam
ofthe day spelt; thought karyam concludes.

Q11 Do offering prayers to Kamadhenu  is eqivalent to ancestroal worship?

A11 Yes. The Vedasalso say that offeringprayers to Goddess Kamadhenu is
equivalent to worshipping our ancestorsand hence it is considered to be
auspicious to feed the cows on a New Moon Day.

According to ancient seers, this worship when performedalong with the feeding
of the cow with "Agathi Keerai"herb leaves produces immense benefits to the
ancestral spirits and the native. The benefits of offering "AgathiKeerai" herb
leaves to the Cow will reach the ancestors residing inany plane of existence
and obtain their blessings for you. If a soul has certain dissatisfaction when
leaving the earthplane, offering Agathi Keerai will appease the soul and make
the soul torest in peace. The soul can then ascend to higher level of existence
beyond theearth plane.

Q12 Do the Karma dies withKartha?

A12 TheKarma dies with the Kartha i.e. when a person  doing shraaddam foreither
his father, GF or wife and after his death, that particular shraaddamshould
not be continued by his son.
