BEING  A COMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1            If electrical circuits contain gold, why can't we extract gold and
gather it from equipment that is no longeruseful?

A1            David Thomas ProfessionalEngineer, Civil, Alaska Wed

That is done. Electronicsfrom the 1940 through 1960s when gold was $35/ounce
can contain moderateamounts of gold, particularly on their contact.

But modern electronics, built when gold has been $1000/ounce have cleverly
reduced the thicknessof such gold layers (it’s mostly used to avoid corrosion,
not as a bulkconductor of electricity).

There are other metals in modern electronics that are valuable enough torecover
if you have enough such surplus equipment and cheap labor. Laxenvironmental
laws help, too.

Q2            What are some of the most disturbingfacts about Indians?

A2            Soham Lives in Biryani(2021–present)Feb 2

If you are an Indian and you earnmore than ₹25,000 per month (which is
considered a bad salary) then you are alreadyin the top 10% earners of the
country.

Q3            If I put hydrogen and oxygen gastogether in a tank, will they
react together? Why? Why isn’t water splitting tohydrogen, and oxygen by itself
without external aid?

A3            Steve Baker SeniorSoftware Engineer (2013–present) Jan 24

In chemistry - some reactionsgenerate energy and others require energy.

Converting hydrogen and oxygenmolecules into water GENERATES energy - but
splitting water back into hydrogen and oxygen moleculse CONSUMESenergy.

So if you just mix hydrogen and oxygen in thecorrect proportions - then
gradually, they’ll gradually combine into water…and if you provide a tiny
amount of energy in theform of a spark or something, then the reaction will go
very fast (anexplosion, essentially).

But to pull water apart requires a great deal of energy - probably in theform
of electricity in an electrolysis tank.

This is why water is so incredibly stable - it takesso much energy to rip it
apart that mostly, it just sits there - being water.

Q4            Neanderthals may have co-existed withhumans for ten thousand
years, before dying out c40,000 BC. Is it likely therewas a high degree of
interbreeding between the two species?

A4            Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper 23h

Some, at any rate. We found out in the last year or two that at thetime of the
most recent bout of interbreeding between Neanderthals and pureHomo sapiens,
manyNeanderthals already had a Y-chromosome which had been derived from
sapiens, meaning there had been a previous bout of interbreeding long enough ago
for themixed genes to have spread widely.

However, because neither Neanderthal Y-chromosomes nor their mitochondriamade
it through to the present day, we think that onlycertain combinations of
crosses between the two resulted in fertile offspring. If they realised that the
children of mixed couples were often barren, thatmight have limited the degree
of intermarriage.

Q5            Why is water evaporation soimportant to leaves?

A5             Dudla Jyothi, M Sc(Ph D) Life & Genetics and Heredity, Mt.
Carmel High School (1981)AnsweredTue

Evaporation accounts for the movement of water to the air from sourcessuch as
the soil, canopy interception, and waterbodies. Transpiration accounts for
themovement of water within a plant and the subsequent loss of water as
vapourthrough stomata in its leaves.

Evaporative cooling: As waterevaporates or convertsfrom a liquid to a gas at
the leaf cell and atmosphere interface, energy isreleased. ... The lossof water
as vapor from plants at their surfaces, primarily through stomata.enhances
nutrient uptake into plants.

Much of the water that soaks into the soil from irrigation or rainultimately
returns the atmosphere as water vapor through direct evaporationfrom the
surface or by transpiration through plant leaves as the plants use thewater for
growth and seed production.

Q6            Let’s say I’m stuck on an islandwith no one with me and my only
option for food is wild fruits, how long couldI survive with eating those
fruits?

A6            Tomaž Vargazon Practicingatheist Mon

A few weeks, until the fruitslasts and assuming you have access to water.

Fruits-We mostly don’t feel this nowadays, but fruits are seasonal. They’re only
around for a few weeks to a few months a year and hard to come byoutside of
that range. We use greenhouses and trade to get around those and itworks, but
you won’t have those on an otherwise deserted island.

Fruits can be used to prolongyour suffering from a few weeks to several weeks
in that case.

Q7            How would a single father raise ababy in prehistoric times?

A7            Mats Andersson Commonor Garden Armchair Historian Tue

There wasn’t really such a thingas a “single father” back then.

Everyone lived in a village, everyone belonged to a tribe. They took careof
each other. If the mother died, there was someone else who wasbreastfeeding; in
a pinch, they might have to go to the next village, but for most of human
history, the normal condition for women was either “pregnant” or “breastfeeding”.

Raising older children was very much a communal effort, with grandmothersand
grandfathers doing much of the babysitting and teaching.

Q8            What are some good ceiling fans withlights?

A8            Jitin Thapar, Managerat Luminous Power Technologies
(2017-present) Answered 7h ago

Since fans are usually installed in the center of the ceiling, they often leave
up no space toinstall a chandelier. But if you’re a fan of chandeliers and
pendantlights, you can opt for fans with lights. These fans are essentially
ceiling fans that double up aschandeliers.

These fans enhance the look and feel of the room and add an element ofinterest
to the design of the space, and can act as a statement piece, enhancing the
overall ambiance of the room.

I have been using the London BigBen ceiling fan by Luminous for quite some time
now. These LED fans are perfectfor people who are looking for an effective
ceiling fan and wish to add a royal, regal look to their space. The best thing
about this fan is that it comes with a five-point dimmer switchwhich lets me
adjust the brightness as per my mood and requirements.

If you’re also looking forexcellent LED fans, make sure to check out the London
Big Ben Ceiling Fan by Luminous. You can also check out the Luminouswebsite to
explore their range of ceiling fans with lights like Luminous NewYork
Manhattan, Luminous Lite Aire etc.

Q9            What are some of the interestingfacts about India?

A9            Miss Anu Mishra Amateurwriter:)Jan 30

In the cold night of December, we were all sleeping in a deep sleep
underblankets.

That very night about 2am ,strange sounds of people shouting start coming
outside our house.

There is a Shiva temple next to our house, everyone was shouting thateveryone
should get up and gather over there.

We have no idea what was happening , there were Chaos all around.

Suddenly a man was passing through our lane then my mumma asked “ whathappened
bhyia ? What's all this happening ?

He too was in a hurry and replied in hush that “Shivling is drinking milk,
everyone is takingmilk in the bowl to feed Shankar ji.

We were literally blanked we had no idea what was going.

I don't remember much because i was barely in class third or fourth atthat time.

But I definitely remember that I went there and there was a long queue, everyone
had a bowl of milk in their hands.

I stood for a long time, the crowd was increasing and I didn't know whatwas
happening inside and it was true or not even I was unaware of it buteverything
seemed strange.

I came back and its discussion went on for many months in the locality.

Shivling is drinking milk, Lord Shankar has manifested himself and manysuch
things happen only in India and I do like belief about God, not superstitions.

My note- The Ganesha drinkingmilk miracle was aphenomenon which occurred on 21
September 1995, in which statues of the Hindu deityGanesha were thought to be
drinking milk offerings.

The news spread very quickly in various Indian and American cities, asIndians
everywhere tried to "feed" idols of Ganesha with milk andspread the news
through telephones and word of mouth, attracting significantattention in the
Indian media. Scientists have described the incident asoccurring through
capillary action…. From Wikipedia. Wiki pedia also states many Ganesha idolsdid
not drink milk. How ever it was a mystory that afterwards suchoccurance was
lesser.

Q10         If the brain is just another organ, whydoesn't it shut down and
stop working at the moment of death?

A10          Brandon Ross contributorat ScienceGrok.com Updated Thu

It does, eventually. Assuming you are not spontaneously disassembled, there is
no single “moment of death”.

There are about 37 trillion cells in your body, and about 37 trillionlittle,
cellular deaths.

The most noticeable visual signof death is that someone stops breathing. The
resulting drop in oxygen being supplied to their body startscausing damage in
different ways.

At some point, a person will loseconsciousness and be unable to do anything
about the situation.

Basically, the cells of your bodyare all being suffocated—and they have no way
to do anything to cause you tobreathe.

When your body can no longer supply the cells in your brain with oxygen, remove
carbon dioxide, or balance any number of other cellular requirements, those
brain cells will also start dying like any other organ.

Some cells will start dying within 1–2 minutes. More will continue tostarve.
After about 5 minutes, enough cells have died that irreparable damageis caused.
After 5–10more minutes, enough cells have died that brain death is imminent
andirreversible.

In very rare situations, areduced requirement for oxygen can cause someone to
survive without oxygen totheir brain for about an hour.

The brain is an organ. Information is encoded by those cells on a veryfine,
cellular level. It's a very sensitive to things like cell death.

You can compare that to, say, bulk tissue of a finger or even an arm. Youcan
chop that off. Deprive it of oxygen for a long period of time. Up to, say,a max
of 12 to 6 hours. You can still break out a sewing kit and some super glueand
reattach that sucker. Do it right, it'll be pretty useable in shortorder. The
brain? No dice. You've got minutes.

Q11         Where in the neuron do nutrients forthe formation of
neurotransmitters pass through?

A11          Ken SaladinFormerprofessor of histology (microscopic anatomy)Tue

Neurons consume a lot of energyand therefore need a rich blood supply. They’re
closely surrounded with blood capillaries to supply them withnutrients and
oxygen. They probably can take innutrients anywhere along the cell, but I think
they absorb them especially atthe cell body.

Most small-molecule neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine,
and acetylcholine are made in the axon terminals. The enzymes needed to
makethem are made in the cell body and transported slowly down to the
axonterminals where they’re put to work. Peptide neurotransmitters
likeendorphins and enkephalin are made in the cell body.

Q12         Will turning up a water heater make hotwater last longer?

A12          Thomas Kendrick, studied at Rice University Answered Oct 21, 2019

There are risks involved which should be considered. It involves finaloutput
temperature and the use of the hot water.

If we are talking about a washing machine or a dishwasher, the answer isNO,
because these appliances always consume hot water at the same rate. Someare
more efficient than others but the rate does NOT depend on the temperature. You
will simply wash dishes with hotter water and the volume of water consumedfor a
wash cycle does not change, so it does not “last longer”.

Tempering valves, or mixingvalves, automatically mix the correct amount of hot
water coming out of thewater heater with cold water to help maintain a safe
water temperature forwashing and showering. Manyshowers have a tempering valve
to avoid scalding. When you raise the waterheater temperature, the tempering
valve will automatically reduce the volume ofhot water in the mix to prevent
scalding. Thus, the rate of consumption DOES depend on temperature. The lowered
rate WILL make the hot water in the heater “last longer”.

2nd answer-Lewis Edge, former Real Estate Agent/Realtor inPrinceton, New Jersey
(2006-2017)Answered Oct 21, 2019

Yes. Raising the temperature ina water heater can reduce the amount of hot
water consumed through a mixing valve such as one on alavatory, sink or shower
but it doesn’t increase the capacity or recovery rateof the heater.
Unfortunately doing that can greatly increase the possibilitythat someone will
be scalded.

3rd answer- RobertHughes , former ProfessionalEngineer, PE, retired at
Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing (1967-2012)AnsweredJul 18, 2020

It will, because you use less of it in the shower to make warm water. If you
make it too hot, it isdangerous and should be avoided.
