BEING  A COMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1            What is the conductor normally usedin heating appliances?

A1            Gopala Krishnan, former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom(1966-2004)Answered just now

NICHROME is the material commonly used in water heaters inIndia. I have
confirmed my answer by google search. Aluminiumoxide powder, compressed into an
outer metal tube is used above coil so thatwhile using electric power to heat
water, water is only heated, electriccurrent  DOESNOT touch water. If any damage
occur in the tube, chances of electric shock may occur. Hence to prevent
electric shock, always switch off supply to water heater before entering the
bathroom.

While for replacing or testing, when technician remove the coil, I havenoted
the silvery colour of aluminium, now confirmed.

Q2            Is it bad to drink water aftereating fruits?

A2            Lucia Garcia Worked atHospitals Feb 7

After eating fruit, it isrecommended to wait 30 minutes before drinking water.
At this time, most of the fruit has been digestedand absorbed by the body.

For most people and some fruits, drinking waterimmediately after eating may
cause diarrhea.

For example, if you drink water immediately after eating plums, pears, and
grapes, you may have diarrhea in less than half an hour.

Because water will dilute stomach acid, reduce the digestive function ofthe
gastrointestinal tract.

At the same time, an oxidation reaction occurs between water, fruit andstomach
acid, which accelerates the peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tractand can
easily cause diarrhea symptoms.

Of course, diarrhea caused bydrinking water immediately after eating fruit is
not caused by bacteria. In most cases, diarrhea will go away naturally and will
not have a major impacton the body.

Q3            Is all the plastic, paper, glass, and aluminium that I put in the
recycle bin really recycled?

A3            David Ecale Reduce,Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle! It's the best way
to cut waste & save money! Jan30

No, it is not! Here’s the scoop:

Aluminum is the most valuable recyclable. As much as possible isrecovered.

Glass is an iffy item. Anything broken goes to the rubbish tip.

Paper? Please, please, please make sure that it is not paper that has food
contamination.past a certain % and the whole lot goes to the rubbish tip.

Plastic? See your recycler as (for example in my case) only #s 1 & 2will be
accepted.

Plastic bags? Never toss them inas they gum up themachines. they require a
special process.

(Bonus) Old metal screws and rusty nails? Easy, peasy, justtoss them in.
They’ll go to the BOS blast furnace.(BOS = Basic OxygenSystem)

Q4            Can an upright civil servant who isthe sole earning member of his
family afford a 3 BHK accommodation in ametropolitan area at the end of his/her
career?

A4            D D Rishi Former IRS |Advocate | LL. M.,Ph.D. (Law) | Sat

A mid-level civil servant inGroup A services may be earning a salary of around
2.5 lakhs per month in India. Apart from it, a very low interest loan is
alsoavailable to him for buying a house. Furthermore, he gets a good percentage
ofhis salary as House Rent Allowance which he saves every month if he owns
hisown house. Therefore,it is not difficult for a civil servant to buy a 3 BHK
house in reasonably goodmetropolitan area provided it's cost does not go beyond
1 to 1.5crores at the most.

Q5            How does an analogue multimeterdiffer from a digital multimeter,
and which is more accurate?

A5            Loring Chien electricalengineer and audiophile for 45 years Feb 4

Analog meters use a moving coil meter and a printed scale. In the mostbasic
meters like the classic Simpson 260 the meter has a movement that is20,000 ohms
per volt meaning it takes 50 uA to deflect the meter full scale. Ona 10 V scale
then the circuit load is 200,000 ohms. This affects the circuitmuch more than
the 10 Mohms of a digital meter.

The ability to read a scale onan analog meter is seldom considered to be more
than 1 %. But digital meters read to 3, digits on commonmeters and 4, 5 and 6
digits on the better lab meters. So you can resolve easily .01%making the
digital meters much higher resolution and usually accuracy iscommensurate.

So loading and resolution andaccuracy the digital meter wins outright. However,
They do need a battery and they are hard to see trends on.

Q6            Why should you not be a housewife?

A6            Lakshmi Ramachandran Ph.Din English Literature, University of
Madras (Graduated 1997)Wed

I have nothing against housewives, but since you ask:

You end up doing work that is drudgery and that can easily be shared bythe
family and done effectively.

It's a thankless job, and it's easy to take you for granted. You don't get
paid,it's not fun. Your chances of being job-ready decrease with time. You are
not financiallyindependent.

Q7            Why was it only ape that can developfurther evolution to a
species capable of developing civilization and highlevel of consciousness? Why
couldn't other species do the similar evolution?

A7            Mats Andersson B. Sc,M. Sc from Uppsala University Jan 27

Partly because once a speciesbecomes intelligent, it appears it quickly comes
to dominate the entire world. And that’s because “intelligence” is very much
aspecialised niche, and once a species goes that way, it obtains a
monopoly:there’s no point for other species to evolve intelligence, because
there’salready someone in that space who is better at it.

And partly because intelligenceprobably seems like a very cool thing to you,
but in terms of evolutionary advantage, the jury is still very muchout. We’ve
only had it for a million years, give or take, and the way it looksright now,
intelligence might be the only characteristic of a species thatallows it to
make itself go extinct.

Q8            Why do we need a personal laptop?

A8            GopalkrishnaVishwanath Lived 69 years so far. No regrets. Look
forward to the best yearsnow. Sun

Others may or not need a laptop but for me it is essential. I spend several
hoursa day sitting with my laptop. It is not just a computer for me. It is
my“Window” to the whole world. It is my library. It is my TV. It is my
moviescreen.

It is my tape recorder. It is my post box or rather email box. It is mybank
counter. It is my purse and my check book. I make online payments throughit.

It is my account ledger. I keep track of all my expenses using spread sheets. It
is my storehouse for all information that I may need. My hard disks
containinformation collected over a period of two decades.

It is my diary. I use Google Keep and jot down anything I may need toaccess
anywhere from any device.

It is my photo album. I have a huge collection of pictures that I scannedfrom
the family photo album. I also use my laptop to store pictures that Ireceive
via email or WhatsApp.

It is my typewriter. I hardly “write” these days. I “type” on my laptop. I
cannot type so much on mysmartphone. I type in three languages on my laptop. It
is myvideo-telephone too. I keep in touch and converse with people using video
chatson Zoom and Google Hangout using my laptop.

The only time I use my smartphone instead of my laptop is to make orreceive
phone calls or send and receive messages or listen to music or talks orpodcasts
when I am out for a long morning or evening walk.

Nowadays I even access WhatsAppon my laptop and check messages on my smartphone
only when I am away from mydesk. Otherwise, I keep WhatsApp minimized on my
desktoptop.

I use my laptop for 80 percent of all my interaction with Quorans and Iuse my
smartphone only for checking notifications, comments, messages, andtyping short
replies to them. I hardly ever type an answer using my smartphone unless the
answer isjust a line or two.

My wife has called my laptop my second wife and her “souten” (co-wife) and
often complains that I spend more time with her“souten” than with her.

Q9            How did hunter gatherers get enoughvitamin C around the world, (I
heard its the fastest degrading mineral.Nowadays we have citrous fruits. But I
imagine the fruits where not availablein all continents back then)?

A9            Matt Riggsby MAArchaeological Studies, Boston University Jan 25

Vitamin C does degrade quickly on exposure to heat and light. However,it’s also
a very common nutrient. Citrus fruits have very high levels of it, but pretty
much all plantshave it at useful levels, and even many meats. We need it in
ourdiets because we’re one of a small number of mammals which doesn’t
synthesizeit on our own. But you don’t need the high levels found in citrus if
everythingyou eat has at least some of it.

Moreover, hunter-gatherers consumed nearly all of their food fresh. Withtheir
nomadic lifestyle, they couldn’t carry around a lot of preserved foods, but
rather ate things more or less when they got them, which means the vitaminC
didn’t have time to degrade. Most of the vitamin C available in all thosefoods
when they were gathered up made it into somebody’s mouth.

Q10         Why don’t Indian tracks support morethan the speed of 130-150 kmph?
What should Indian Railways do to upgrade it to300+ km/h?

A10          Anand Feb 8

To support high speed railway lines curves should be avoided so more landand
effort should be put in which also increases the cost. Currently the technology
is being developed to makehigh speed rails and also a lot of time and effort is
required to convert olderrails into newer developed ones. So to sum up it
requires more time and we alsoneed land, manpower and money to make this
possible and I sincerely hope thatit happens in the near future.

Q11         What is the greatest accidentalinvention?

A11          Steven Haddock LL.B.degree, 25 years in litigation, administrative
law, collections, bankrupty andprofessional regulation Sat

The first artificial dye. Thechemist was trying to makeartificial quinine for
treating malaria. He got lavender coloured dyeinstead.

Penicillin. Alexander Flemingcame back to his lab to find amold had gotten onto
one of his bacterial dishes. He noticed the mold hadkilled the bacteria.

Polyvinyl chloride. Twice. Inboth cases a chemist mixedtogether ingredients and
put them in a sunny location. The mixture hardenedinto a plastic. The first guy
wrote it down, but didn’t tell anyone about it.The second one patented it. No
one found a use for it until 54 years after itwas first synthesized.

Bandaging wounds. A Frenchfield surgeon had run out ofcoal to heat up his
cauterizing irons and all he had was strips of cloth so hebandaged wounds
instead of burning them. The bandaged patients had much betteroutcomes.

Radioactivity. A Frenchscientist put a rock next to somephotographic film, and
when he developed the film he found it has been ruined. He soon found he could
replicate the effect.

X-Rays. Roentgen was foolingaround with cathode ray tubesand decided to put a
piece of metal in the path of the electron beam. And gotvery interesting
radiation coming off the metal. The resulting radiationpenetrated flesh, but
not bone.

The diode. Thomas Edison triedto use a wire coming out of the topof a light
bulb to hold up parts of his light bulb, but when it was on currentflowed from
the filament to the wire even thought they weren’t connected. Hepatented it but
others realized this would create a one-way electricity gate.

Vulcanized rubber. Goodyearaccidentally dropped sulfur into arubber compound he
was trying to develop. He found that the resulting rubber was both flexible
andmelt resistant which meant it could be poured into molds and retainits shape
indefinitely.

Guncotton. A chemist spilledsome chemicals and used acloth to wipe them up. He
put the cloth near the fire to dry only to see itburst into flames and
instantly vaporize. He realized he had an ammunitionquality explosive.

Q12         Is it okay to rent an apartment withonly a bedroom, kitchen, and
wash room but no living room?

A12          Chris Cox Lives inPoole, Dorset Sat

These are known in the U.K. asStudio Flats.

40 years ago we were looking for a property to rent in London. One was aStudio
Flat . We went to view it. It was 3 rooms. A kitchen, a bathroom and aliving
room. The sofa converted into a double bed, and the bedding was
storedunderneath the seat during the day. We decided it would be fine in
theshort-term, but that once our forthcoming baby was mobile it wouldn’t
besuitable so decided to look elsewhere.
