A6 No. Thisthread is not something exclusive to Brahmans, it is for all Aryas If we go by what Manu says, I Brahman’s poonal is made of cotton, a Kshtriya’s poonal of hemp and a vishaya’s poonal is ofwool Q7 We know thereare four Vedas. Which vedins predominate? A7 Among the followers of the four Vedas, Yajurvedins predominate. The majorityin the North(Brahmins) belong to the Sukla-Yajurveda while most people in theSouth belong to Krsna-Yajurveda. The day on which Yajurvedins perform their upakarma is declared asrestricted HOLIDAY. There is no suchholiday for upakarma of Rgvedins and Samavedins. This is because Yajurvedins are in amajority. The Purusasukta of the Rgveda occurs with some changes in theYajurveda. Q8 Name the sonborn to Rati and Kama A8 Kama got married to Rati and produced Arsh Q9 Do Sama vedahad much prominence earlier? A9 Yes. In the Lalitha-Sahasranama (The One Thousand Names of the GoddessLalitha), Amba has the name of "Samagana-priya” (one who delights in Samagana); she isnot called "Rgveda-priya" or "Yajurveda-priya". In theSiva-astottaram ["Siva astottara-satam, the 108 names of Siva], Siva isworshipped thus:"Samapriyayanamah” Q10 What isAtharva veda and its details? A10 Atharvan" means a purohita, a priest. There was a sage with thisname. That which wasrevealed by the seer Athrvan is the Atharvaveda. It contains mantras with which one wards off misfortunes and disastersand brings about the destruction of one's enemies. The Atharvaveda is a mixture of prose and poetry. The mantras of otherVedas also serve the same purpose as those of the Atharvaveda. Butwhat is special about the latter is that it has references to deities notmentioned in the others and has mantras addressed to fierce spirits The Atharvaveda, that is its Samhita, is rarely chanted in the North andis not heard at all in the South. But we must remember that of the ten important Upanishads three belong tothis Veda - Prasna, Mundaka and Mandukya. It is believed that those who seek liberation need nothing to realisetheir goal other than Madukya Upanishad. What has come to be known as "mantrikam" (magical rites) hasits source in this Veda. We learn from stone inscriptions that the Atharvaveda had a followinguntil some centuries ago. Information about Vedic schools is provided by suchinscriptions found near Perani, not far from Tindivanam, at Ennayiram and aplace near Walajabad Even during the reign of the later Cholas the Atharvavedawas learned in the Tamil country. There are eighteen divisions among the Brahmins of Orissa. One of themis made up of "Atharvanikas", that is Atharvavedins. Even today Atharvavedins can be met, though their number is small, in partsof Gujarat likeSaurashtra and in Kosala Q11Whether the Gayathri for Adharvas is different? A11 Gayatri is the mantra of mantras and it is believed to be the essenceof the three Vedas - whichmeans that the Atharvaveda is excluded here. According to one view, before he startslearning the Atharvaveda, a brahmacharin must go through a second upanayana ceremony. Generaly, the Gayatriimparted to a child at Brahmopadesa ceremony is called"Tripada-Gayatri" - it is so called because it has threepadas or three feet. Each foot encompasses the essential spirit of one Veda, The Atharvaveda has a seperate Gayatri and ifpeople belonging to other Vedas want to learn this Veda they have to go througha second upanayana to receive instruction in it. For the followers of the first three Vedas, however there is only oneGayatri and those belonging to any one of them can learn the other two Vedaswithout another upanayana. Q12 Whwther the Brahmins have accumulated knowledge? A12 The Munis were the enlightenedsages and they passed on their knowledge, wisdom and culture through theirgenerations.Every generation has gained fresh knowledge by assimilating the newthoughts that emerged from time to time. So a Brahminembodies the accumulated knowledge of all his forefathers who are traced tosaints belonging to Vedic past. When the embryo of the baby is formed, it inherits all the accumulatedknowledge of earlier generations but once the baby is born, it severs itsconnection with the past. Thisdetachment is marked by the cutting of umbilical cord. Q13 Name the kingwho established the concept of monogamy ? A13 Ramaestablished the concept of monogamy and he strictly adhered to it. Gradually thisconcept and tradition of monogamy took roots in Indian society. Increasing population and concept of small nuclear family introducedby western culture also has pushed the society to accept monogamy In thedecade 1880-90, Sri Ramakrishna has clearly said : After two children husband and wife should livelike brother and sister!!! Moreover, although he married Ma SaradaDevi, they never had sexual life even once!!! Higherprogress in the realm of spirituality is not possible without giving up "Kaminiand Kanchana" -Lust and Gold. Q14 What are thedetails of star pair Arundhathi-Vasishtha ? A14 The star pair Arundhathi-Vasishtha is in the famousconstellation Ursa Major. It is also called Big Dipper or GreatBear. In India thisconstellation is called Saptha Rishi mandala (Seven Sages). Vasishtha is one of the seven Rishis. The star Arundhathi is difficult to separate from Vasishta forpeople with poor eyesight. In India, it is said anecdotally that people who are approaching death can not separate Arundhathi from Vasishtaand hence can not see Arundhathi. Perhaps eye sight has moreto do with this. In USA, which is in the Northern Hemisphere, Ursa Major iseasily visible most of the year. Q15 What is solarmonth and lunar month? What is Adhika masam? A15 The basis for solar calendar is the rotation of the Earth around theSun The lunar calendar is based on the moon’s rotation around theEarth. The lunar month corresponds to one complete rotation of Moonaround the Earth. Since this period of rotationof moon around the earth varies, the duration of lunar month also varies. On average, the lunar month has about 29 ½ days. In general, the lunar year has twelve lunarmonths of approximately 354 days, thus making it shorter by about 11 days thanthe solar year. However, the lunar calendar accounts for thisdifference by adding an extra lunar month about once every 2½ years. This extra lunar monthis known as the “Adhik Mas” in India once about every two and half years, the entry of the Moon in the samezodiac sign occurs twice while the Sun remains in the same sign. In other words, when the Sun is traveling through the same zodiac sign, the month during which two new moons occur, happens once about every 2 ½years. Theconcept of the Adhik mas (the extra month) is similar to the “Blue Moon” in theWest, which occurs almost with the same frequency of 2 ½ years Blue moon is the secondfull moon when two full moons occur in the same month. around the time of Adhik Mas, thesuccessive full moons are very likely to occur near the beginning and the endof the same month Q16 What are thetwo parts of Vedas? A16 Vedas were divided into two parts, 1) Karma Kanda(ritual portion), and 2) Jnana Kanda(knowledge portion - Upanishads). -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
