Q7 Did   Lekshmanan took  lessons from the dying Ravana?

A7 Inthe   Ramayan, Ravan lies mortallywounded on the battlefield and the
monkeys are celebrating their victory, when Ram turns to his brother,Lakshman,
and says, "While Ravanwas a brute, he wasalso a great scholar. Go to him
quickly and request him to share whateverknowledge he can"

The obedientLakshman rushes to Ravan's side and whispers in his ears,
"Demonking, all your life you have takennot given. Now the noble Ram
givesyou an opportunity to mend your ways. Share your vast wisdom. Do
not let it die with you. For that youwill be surely be blessed".

Ravan responds by simply turning away.

An angry Lakshman goes back to  Ram and says: "He is as arrogant as healways
was, too proud to share anything." Ram looks at his brother and asks him
softly,"Where did you  stand while askinghim for knowledge?"

"Nextto his head so that I hear  what he hadto say clearly."

Ram smiles, places his bow on the ground and walks to where Ravan lies. Lakshman
watches inastonishment as his   brother kneels atRavan's feet.

With palmsjoined, with extreme humility, Ram says, "Lord of Lanka, you
abducted my wife, a terrible crime for which Ihave been forced to   punish you.
Now,you are no more my enemy. I see you now as you are    known across the
world, as the wise son ofRishi Vishrava. I bow to you   andrequest you to share
your wisdom with me. Please do that for if you    die without doing so, all
your wisdom willbe lost forever to the  world".

ToLakshman's surprise, Ravan opens his eyes and raises his arms to  salute Ram,
"If only I had more time asyour teacher than as your enemy. Standing at my feet
as a student should, unlike your rude younger  brother, youare a worthy
recipient of my knowledge.

I have verylittle   time so I cannot share much butlet me tell you one
important lesson I have learnt in my life.

Things thatare bad for you seduce you easily;you run towards them impatiently.
But thingsare actually good for you     fail toattract you; you shun them
creatively, finding powerful excuses  to justify your procrastination. That is
whyI was impatient to abduct   Sita butavoided meeting you. This is the wisdom
of my life, Ram.

My    last words. I give it to you." Withthese words, Ravan dies.it is easy to
claim material possessions of thedefeated, but it is not easy to claim their
knowledge. Knowledge does notoutlive death.

Q13 Why do sun worship is doneduring Srirama  navami?

A13 Celebrations begin with a prayerto the Sun early in the morning.

At midday, when Lord Rama issupposed to have been born, a special prayer is
performed Surya - The Sun wasrecognised as the source of light and heat even in
ancient times.

Many royal dynasties potrayedsymbols of virility like the Sun, Eagle, Lion etc.
as their progenitor. Rama'sdynasty considered themselves to have descended from
the Sun. This could haveled to the tagging on, of Rama's birthday to a festival
devoted to the sun.TheSun is considered to be the progenitor of Rama's dynasty
which is called theSundynasty (Raghukula or Raghuvamsa, Raghu means Sun and
Kula or Vamsa meanfamilial descendant).

Rama is also known as Raghunatha,
Raghupati, Raghavendra etc. That all these names begin with the prefix Raghu
isalso suggestive of some link with Sun-worship The syllable Ra is used in
theword to describe the sun and brilliance in many languages.

In Sanskrit, Ravi and Ravindra mean Sun. Thehour chosen for the observance of
the lord's birth is that when the sun isoverhead and is at its maximum
brilliance. In someHindu sects, prayers on Ramnavami day start not with an
invocation to Rama butto Surya (sun)
