Q1 What is the legend behind the right of preparingdelicaies in Kitchen with
Muttassu Nampoothiri?A1 The right to preparethe delicacies for the Pratal ie,
Anna Dana is mainly   with Muttass Nampoothiri. Once the HolyVilwa Mangalathu
Swamiar came to meet Vaikkathappan in the noon time. He couldnot find the Siva
Sannidhya  in theSreekovil. Hewent in search of the Lord in the whole temple
courtyard and happened to see Vaikkathappan doing work in a Brahmindress at the
big Kitchen.
When Vaikkathappan saw the Vilwa Mangalathu Swamiar,He handed over the
Chattukom (spoon) to the Muttass Nampoothiri and       disappeared. From that
day onwards the right (Karanma) was withMuttass Nampoothiri. The
MuttassNampoothiri ritually takes bath and brings a burning charcoal taken from
theThidappally and comes in front of the Sreekovil , rings the bell and
worshipsthe Lord. His works start only  afterthis ritual.

Q2 What is the legend behind Recital of Ghattium atVaikkam temple by Brahmins?

A2 It is a special ritualperformed only in this Holy Temple of Vaikkathappan.
It does not exist in anyTemple in Kerala or anywhere else.  The recital
ofghattium is ordinarily done during Deeparadhana and third   round of Athazha
Sribeli Procession .

A rod of about five feet, covered in pure     silver and fixed with a Rushabha
on thetop is carried by an aged  Brahmin   who facing the Lord recites the
slokas ofthe Lord holding the rod and closing his eyes with much respect and
devotion. It is the essence of the recital of ghattium.
It was started by Ayilyam thirunal Maharaja of  Travancore on 27th Thulam of
1030 of theMalayalam era. It is a noble  example ofthe benevolence and kindness
of Vaikkathappan to his Devotee.

There was an old Brahminwho was devoted to Siva but poor with no one to look
after him. One day while he was sitting for Prathal, a certainBrahmin came to
him asking some place to sit for Prathal. The old Brahmin  at once offered a
seat for Him and exchangedpleasantries. He told his grievances to the newcomer.
The new Brahmin told him that he knewthe  Maharaja well and asked him to go
toTrivandrum and he promised to do the rest. No one saw him afterwards.

The old Brahmin went toTrivandrum  without any hope. The Ayilyamthirunal
Maharaja was surprised to receive   the old Brahmin from Vaikom and explained
him about his dream the daybefore.

In that dream Vaikkathappantold the Maharaja, “There is no  recitalof Ghattium
in my Temple . You must receive the respected old   Brahmin who comes from
Vaikom tomorrow andgrant him a silver rod fixed with Rushabha Vahana and send
him back to myTemple entrusting him to do the recital of ghattium”.

On the same day theMaharaja got a rod as asked   byVaikkathappan the Lord and
brought it to the Temple himself. The Maharajahimself gave the Silver rod to
the above Brahmin in the presence ofVaikkathappan and entrusted him to recite
the ghattium every day. The  Maharaja also fixed a monthly stipend for theold
Brahmin from the Devaswom and returned. This recital is in force even today.

Q5 What is the legend behind Bhogi?

A5 Originated as a Dravidianharvest festival, it has found no mention in
Indo-Aryan Puranas. According tothe popular legend, the first day of the
festival known as Bhogi Pongal was once dedicated to Lord Indra. The  child
Krishna came to know of the pride andarrogance of Indra on being the  king
ofthe deities and that he thought himself to be the most powerful of all
thebeings. He conjured a plan to teach him a lesson. When, as usual, his
father and other villagers who were cowherdsby profession, were    preparing
for the festival and offerings to Indra,Krishna objectedand persuaded   them
to worship Mt Govardhan instead, as it gavethem fodder for their cattle. When
Indra came to know of this, he considered it a heresy of the  villagers and
sent thunderous pours, storms and lightning to drown them andpunish    them.

However, Lord Krishna hadother plans in mind and he lifted up the Govardhan
mountain on hislittle finger to protect the cowherds and their cattle.

The  simpletons tried to help him by putting theirown sticks in the mountain
out  of love. The rains continued for three days and at last Indra realized  his
mistake and divine power of the young boy. He promised humility and  begged
Krishna 's forgiveness. Since then, Krishna allowed to let the
Bhogicelebrations continue in honor of Indra.

A beautiful depiction ofthe scene   can be scene at Mahabalipuramwhere Krishna

festival of Pongal came    into being.
