Q1         Can fruits replace vegetables in ourdaily diet?

A1         Lucia Garcia Worked at Hospitals Sat

Althoughfruits and vegetables have many similarities, fruits cannot replace
vegetables.

Fruits are mainlythe fruits and seeds of plants, while vegetables are mainly
the roots, stems, leaves and flowers of plants.

There are many morevarieties of vegetables than fruits. In terms of overall
nutritional value, the nutritionalvalue of fruits is lower than that of
vegetables.

Most vegetables, especially dark-coloured vegetables, are much higher in dietary
fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals than fruits.

Many fruits are sweet and are much higher incarbohydrates than vegetables.
Fruits are about5 to 15 percent carbohydrates, while vegetables are less than 3
percentcarbohydrates.

Fruit carbohydratesare mainly in the form of sugars like glucose, fructose, and
sucrose, If youeat too much fruit, the excess sugar can easily be converted
into fat, leadingto obesity.

Vegetables are much lower in calories than fruits, and evenif you eat more
vegetables, there is no risk of obesity.

Vegetables play avery important role in regulating the physiological functions
of the body andmaintaining good health.

To maintain a balanced nutrition, WHO recommends that eachperson consume 300 to
500 grams of vegetables and 200 to 300 grams of fruitsper day.

Q2         Can dogs be evil? I love animals and Ihave never known a dog like
this, he never greets happily, and he gives me aside long glance that looks
really condescending! All other dogs I've knownlove me, including ones in this
household.

A2         Claire Jordan Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner,
secretary on newspaper Sat

No, dogs can’t be evil, but they can be insane.I’m not suggesting this dog is.

I suspect what thisdog is, is an adult. The main mechanism of domestication in
dogs is neoteny, the persistence of juvenilecharacteristics into adulthood.
We’ve bred them to be puppyish anddependent, but some breeds are less puppyish
and more like grown-up wolves, so you have to win theirfriendship. And when you
have it they will be polite grown-up companions, not doting, needy babies.

Q4         Do animals feel emotions? I say yes, myco-worker says no and when we
look it up online we get mixed answers.

A4         Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper Sat

Sponges andjellyfish, no, probably not - but any reasonably complex animal will
have emotions appropriate to itslifestyle, because emotions are drives which
evolved to make usbehave in advantageous ways. Animals which are social and
care for their mates and young will haveall the same emotions as we do, aside
from the really rarified, intellectual ones such as existential angst. And even
there, some of them willmanage a version of it.

Q5         What should I know when building a homein a rural area?

A5         Gopala Krishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004) Answered justnow

After seeing abuilding in city or town, it would be difficult even today to
build a home ofthe same type in rural area with materials available and workers
available inrural area. Though onebuilds his home in his owned land, still
according to village customs one hasto build a home in rural area. If one build
home bringing men andmaterials from city or town, village cooperation is
required for urgent repairsand homely living. One cannot live without happiness
from villagers on them ina home built in village.

Q6         How did diapers work 100 years ago?

A6         Stefan Hill Updated Thu

I talked to my greatgrand mother, born 1907 about diapers. When she had small
children she lived ona small farm with 4 cows. The farm was not big enough to
support a family soher husband had to work as a lumberjacker between Christmas
and Eastern. It meantthat she was alone with her children and the cows.

Diapers were made of cotton and were washed and reused. She washed them in a
huge iron washing pot. No problem. You just made a fireunder it. And you had to
carry water to it in buckets from the well. It workedjust fine.

Perfect for boiling used diapers.

There was however aproblem. If the winter got cold, and temperatures down to
-30 C is normal innorthern Sweden, you could not do the washing outdoors. She
solved it by moving the potinto the cow house. The cows heat the cowhouse by
their bodyheat so that itdoes not get freezing cold.

The problem wasthat washing diapers over open fire caused a lot of steam. The
cowhouse wasfilled with steam. Everything turned wet. You had to open up and
let the steamout. But you could not let the cold air cool the cowhouse down
under thefreezing point as it would turn the steam into water and the water
into ice.She said that it was a problem. She preferred to wait with the washing
untiloutdoor temperature was above 0. Unfortunately temperature can stay below
0 formonths.

I wondered how shewas able to take care of her infants and the cows and
everything else allalone. She laughed and explained that she was not. She had a
helper,. It was normal to have a youngwomen or a girl hired to help a mother
when the man was away. Shehad herself worked as a helper to a mother in need of
help before she became amother herself. That was how you learned she said.

If you were luckyyou had a lake close by.

NOTE: You mightconsider it a misery to have to use fire wood to heat the water
in a pot whereyou boil used diapers, but she was actually enjoying a modest
wealth. She had ahouse of her own, a barn, a cow house and an almost limitless
supply of woodand water. Poor people, like industrial workers would live in a
crowdedapartment and would in a best case scenario have access to a washing
house. They would have astonished by the luxuries available to my children’s
greatgrandmother.

Q9         Are there wild cattle in the UK?

A9         Claire Jordan Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner,
secretary on newspaper Updated Sat

There are several herds of White Park Cattle, who areonly slightly modified
from the aurochs, aside from beinga bit smaller and being white with black or
chestnut ears, noses and lowerforelegs. Some are nowkept like ordinary domestic
cattle, but many still live semi-wild like moorlandponies - they live in the
woods in large parks and see to their ownfeed, breeding, giving birth etc, but
the herds are managed and givenveterinary treatment if required.

A small group of wild European forest bison or wisentwere recently reintroduced
to Kent, but so far theylive in a woodland which is fenced off so they can’t
wander away. Wisent aresimilar to American plains bison, except taller and not
quite as blocky.

Q10              Do Japanese people typically makerice fresh for every meal or
do they make large batches every day or two sothat it can be eaten cold or
reheated later?

A10       Hantani Sadahiko Lives in Japan (1967–present)Updated Mar 21

Japanese cook rice for each meal.Rice that has passed a long time loses its
flavor. In Japan, "making someone eat cold rice(冷や飯を食わせる hiyameshi wo
kuwaseru)" is ametaphor for treating someone coldly.

Even in Japan, whenI throw away rice, God gets angry. I cook something and eat
it.I'll haveOchazuke or fried rice for cold rice.

"Ifyou throw away rice, God will punish you and you will lose your sight."says
the parent.

Japanese areeducated by their parents to "take good care of your rice.".So"step
on the rice with your feet" is torture against the Japanese.asmuch as an
Italian saying, "I'm going to put pineapples on yourpizza."
