BEING  A COMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1            How did early humansspread to all continents from Africa without
a boat?

A1            Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper16h

The first humans to leave Africa seem to have done so from the Horn of Africa
toYemen. At its narrowest point the Red Sea is iirc nine miles across- close
enough that they could see trees and grass on the far side - andthere’s an
island partway, so they only had to paddle their canoes or rafts a few miles at
a time.At a pinch they could even have swum across. It’s also possible to walk
from Egypt to Israel overland, provided you have a couple of days’ supply of
food and water with you.

That gave humans access to Asia and Europe - from the Middle East, theyjust had
to walk. Humans penetrated as far east as Kamchatka, then crossed toAlaska
either by walking across the land bridge which existed at the time, orby
canoeing along the edge of it, camping on land at night. From there theycould
get to anywhere in the mainland Americas by walking.

The only time proper sea-goingships were required was to get from the south of
mainland Asia to Indonesia, Australia and various small islands. We mustassume
that by that point they had developed better canoes and rafts, like theones
used to settle the Pacific islands. But note that humans only made it asfar as
New Zealand less than a thousand years ago.

Q2            My wife and I willretire in a house with a living space of 2,000
sq ft. Is that manageable for anelderly couple? Is it too large or too small?

A2            Bhuvana Rameshwar Livesin Chennai /Ooty/Bengaluru
(1979–present)Sat

2000 sq feet is too large fortwo elderly people. At thisage taking care of such
a large house is difficult even with servants or hiredday cleaners. It also
feels lonely as an empty nest what with adult children, their families away.

I would prefer a safe , smallapartment of maximum 1200 sq ft with three
bedrooms and three wash rooms besides a hall, kitchen etc. InBangalore we live
in a 3 bedroom apartment wherein one bed room is not used atall unless we have
guests. This is our son and dil room. But we have to use theattached washroom
here often as unused pipes send out insects through the dry, drain outlets.Or
spider webs may take over. Keeping our apartment clean is not difficult asit
doesn't get very dirty with just two of us here. So we manage without
anyservants.

Now.. Why apartment and not aseparate house?

It is safe, the apartment has watchmen, a generator for power cuts andlift. The
apartment has a committee which takes care of other apartment issueslike bore
well, pump cleanliness, repairs, painting, and other annualactivities. We have
our privacy yet people around for company and any help ifneeded.Any time we
want we just lock the main door and are off on our regulartours. A single
separate cottage or villa would surely be robbed even in onenight trip in
Bengaluru ! Besides maintaining a garden at this age is tiring. In our youth we
lived in a cottage in Ooty, a hill station with a beautifulgarden but often
faced water problem. Attack on elderly by the watchman, maid,or driver combo is
becoming very common in India too.More rooms also mean morehoarding of
unnecessary things, filled store rooms, lofts. So dispose awayunused things,
live light and free. Houses are clean and insects free thus.

Q3            How excited are youabout reports that fossils from dinosaurs
killed on the day a massive asteroidstruck the planet millions of years ago may
have been unearthed?

A3            Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper Sat

Not very - but only becauseI’ve known about it for a couple of years. This is
just a more detailed report which has been published, now thatthey are further
along in the excavation. When the find was first announced, they’d found
evidenceof a tsunami - marine, freshwater and river-bank organisms all jumbled
together- at the KT boundary, including part of a luckless Triceratops. So
what’s newis definite confirmation that this happened within an hour or two of
theasteroid strike, because they’ve found fish who had taken fresh debris from
thestrike into their gills, plus part of another, more bipedal dinosaur, a
turtlekilled and run through by a broken branch, and a pterosaur egg.

Q5            Why is Indian Railwaysnot introducing modern new trains in South
India?

A5            Vibhakar T S (Cricket)Know about India. Updated Fri

Tejas express, one of thefastest trains in India with good facilities, has four
routes currently inIndia. One of those routes is between Chennai (Egmore) and
Madurai.

Vande Bharat Express (Train 18)has only two routes currentlyin India. None of
them are in South India. But in the upcoming days, there willbe many of them
coming to South India.

There are already a lot ofShatabdi and Janashatabdi trains running between
different routes in South India, if they're considered asmodern new
trains.SouthIndia isn't neglected with modern new trains. There has been a
slight delay dueto the pandemic, where train services were stopped. If not,
oneVande Bharat express train would've come by 2023 to South India. It might
takesome time. But eventually, the trains will surely run. Can't say when
SouthIndia would get its first Bullet train though.

Q6            Why did humans evolveto have teeth with nerves? Do they have a
point, biologically speaking?

A6                     VivienneMarcus mammalian anatomist Apr 4

The nerves in your teeth givevery clear feedback on how hard you are biting
down on something.

You’ve got enough strength to break your own teeth if you bite down toohard.

Since human teeth don’t regrow, having nerves in your teeth makes them more
likely to last.
