Q1            What is the mostefficient temperature for a hot water heater?

Q1            David Thomas,Professional Engineer, Civil, Alaska Answered Thu

The lowest temperature that all your fixtures as hot as you need them. That’s
usually 120F / 50C and keeping it there will slightly increaseefficiency
(better heat exchange and lower standby losses) while alsominimizing scald
hazards.

But if 120F / 50C works fineand there’s enough hot water for everyone to take a
shower when they want, try turning it down 5F / 3C at a time. Ifthere are no
problems for a month, try another such step. At some point, someone will
complain and then just reverse the previous change.

Turn that big black dial on the outside of a gas water heater or thesmall white
dial on the inside, under an access panel, on an electric waterheater. Note
that electric water heaters have TWO thermostats, one high and onelower, and
you should move them to the same setting and the same time, oryou’ll be
scratching your head about the results if you get the top of the tankhotter
than the bottom.

Keep notes or take pictures with your phone so you can recreate theprevious
settings.

And those metals screws on theelectrical water heater thermostat? Do NOT touch
them, since they’re at 120 voltsto ground in North America and 240 volts
elsewhere.

2ND ANSWER AndrewVoigt, life long compulsivestudies of how Answered Apr 4

The answer to that is determined by what you mean by efficiency.

If you seldom use your hot water and want to spend less energymaintaining the
temperature. Set the tank to provide water only hot enough so that with the hot
taponly, the water is hot enough for your needs. This is also the safe way
foryoung children who could scald themselves.

If you have a large household and everyone wants lots of hot showers andbaths.
You will want toset the temperature high so that it can be mixed with cold
water. This will allow the tank to supply more shower time. It is also good
forrunning a busy kitchen. Youwill need to be careful of small children and
dumb grownups .

Q2            Why do we feel fullafter drinking water?

A2            Lucia Garcia Worked atHospitalsThu

The human hypothalamus, the main area of the brain that regulates foodintake,
includes the ventromedial nucleus, which is the satiety center.

When the stomach is full offood, liquid, or water, the ventromedial nucleus is
stimulated, Resulting in aFeeling of Fullness.

It only takes a few seconds for water to travel through the esophagus tothe
stomach. The esophagus is a small tube that connects the mouth to thestomach
and is about 30cm to 40cm long.

After water leaves the stomach, it enters the small intestine, theprocess that
takes only about 10 to 20 minutes, much faster than food and otherliquids.

Most of the water is absorbed by the small intestine and then enters
thebloodstream,

The water in the blood isfiltered by the kidney becomes original urine. The
original urine is transported to the bladder and then excreted.

My note- Probably when we drink buttermilk, lemon juice etc, we consumemore
than the quantity of water.Probably it takes little more time to reach large
intestine.

Q3            Which is the best airconditioner brand in India with less energy
consumption and high cooling?

A3            Hitachi Cooling andHeating India Updated Tue

Looking for the best AC for which has low electricity consumption
withoutcompromising on its cooling?

Here are some important factorsto be kept in mind:

· Calculate your Room Size then decide the correct Cooling capacity

· Always try to go with 5 StarEnergy Rating

· Inverter ACs consume low energy in comparison with Non-Inverter ACs but
actually, it depends on the usage time for e.g.,if you think you need to
operate your AC 3 to 4 hours a day, then go for aNon-Inverter AC and it won’t
affect the bill so much but if you want to operateyour AC more than 5 hours a
day then you should go for an Inverter AC.

· Always choose 100% copperCoil which has the capability to give faster cooling
with low power consumption

· Always check the ISEER (Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio).Higher the
ISSER rating, more the cooling, lesser the energy consumption

One of the best rated and most sought-after brands, when it comes to lowenergy
consumption, high cooling ACs, is Hitachi.

Its energy efficient range of Air Conditioners consisting of
state-of-artfeatures like FrostWash (self-cleaning tech.), iSee(directed
airflow),iSense(movement sensor), and iClean(auto-cleaning), WiFi control,
areengineered to remain effective no matter the weather. With
top-of-the-linecooling capacity, it cools really fast and thus saves
electricity, evenremaining unaffected in highly humid conditions. These range
of ACs consume a significantlylow amount of power for their operation as the
flow of refrigerant and thespeed of the compressor are set optimally to achieve
this. What’s more, thesestylish ACs are cost effective and require minimal work
for installation. Theyare best suited for all your interior decoration needs
and offer superiorenergy efficiency and performance.

My note- One AC technician froma company while on informal talk, told me that
Hitachi could be better than their company product, sincethey are in the field
for long period.

Q4            Why is only a whitebed sheet used in hotels?

A4            Rohit Virmani KnowsEnglish Wed

At first glance, using all-white bedding in a hotel might seem a bitabsurd;
white fabric is the easiest to stain, after all.

Before the 1990s, colorfulsheets were used in hotels. Thecolored sheets could
easily hide the stains, if any. In 1990, Westin hotels popularized the white
hotellinen. They surveyed and found people prefer clean and fresh linen. The
white bed created a “halo” effect and made guests think their room is justmade
fresh & clean for them.

However, there are other reasons as to, ‘Why white bed sheet/linen is used’?:

Because they look and feel so clean, they also give the impression of
luxury—even if thehotel itself is rather inexpensive.

When worst comes to worst and the bed is stained beyond recognition, white
sheets are fairly easy tobleach away. (the colored sheets if bleached would
leave patches).

All the dirty linen(towel/sheets) can be thrown into washing without worrying
about any colorsrunning.

Because of white color, it is easy for the service staff to spot thedirty
linen, at once. The white color gives a rich feeling andit feels good to be
sleeping on all white.

Q5            What are the solutionsfor Washing machine over-filling problem?

A5            Gopala Krishnan, former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answeredjust now

Basic reason is many do notread instructions about capacity, % of capacity
preferable given by the company. By experience one can calculate the weight of
wetclothes. Only 75%  capacity to be put for washing. Forbest washing clothes
should not be used till they become over dirty. One shouldhave patience to wait
for first set of clothes washed and 2nd set is put forwashing. In the hurryto
finish the work most over filling is done. So one has to make ita point not to
add more clothes with weight in the washing machine.

Q9            Why did humans developosmidrosis? What role did it play in our
evolution?

A9            Ken Saladin Formerprofessor of histology (microscopic anatomy)Apr

Osmidrosis is simply bad underarm (axillary) odor resulting frombacterial
action on the sweat. It’s just a fancy word for stinky armpits.

There’s no reason to think humans “developed” osmidrosis as an adaptationor
that it played any role in human evolution.

“Axillary osmidrosis is characterized by offensive odor resulting from
bacterial decomposition ofapocrine secretions in the axillae, and individuals
with axillaryosmidrosis suffer detrimental effects to their psychosocial
functioning.”
