Q1 What are the attributes ofMayiladuthrurai?

A1 Maylidauthurai is the travel base fromwhere you can see mostnumber of Divya
desams and Thevara padal petra sthalams, more than evenKumbakonam and
Kanchipuram! Especially, Thirunangur (near Sirkazhi)and its surroundings have
the maximum no of Divya desams and Thevara PadalPetra sthalams.

It is believed that Ganga, Yamunaand Saraswathi come to Cauvery during the
month of Iyppasi every year to getrid of their sins that are collected from the
pilgrims who take a holy dip inthem and recharge themselves for the next year.

Tula snanam in Cauvery during the monthof Iyppasi is highly popular and the
town wears a festive look throughout theIyppasi month

Q2 What is the speciality with Dharmasthalapriests?

A2 Many of us  might have also visited Kshetra  Dharmastala.  This is atemple
of Lord Shiva ( Manjunatha ), the priests are Madhvas ( vaishnavites )and the
temple is owned and managed by Jains ( Hegdes ).  Thereis much  more tolerance
in KarnatakaTemples compared to many TN temples.

Q3 What is Siddhidatri ?

A3 Siddhidatri is the ninth form ofGoddess.

She is worshipped on the ninth day ofNavaratri. Siddhidatri has supernatural
healing powers. She has four arms andshe is always  in a blissful
happyenchanting pose. She rides on the lion as her vehicle. She blesses all
Gods, saints, yogis, tantrics and all   devotees as a manifestation of the
MotherGoddess.

In 'Devi  Bhagvata Purana' it is mentioned that Lord Shiva worshipped her  and
was blessed with all Siddhis(supernatural powers).

By her  blessings his half body became female and other half body male in  the
avatar of Ardhnarishvara

A4 No.  Theessence of Vedas is to live and let live all creatures.  Since the
world belongs to all born no one has the right to take away orimpede   others
right to live. This beingthe case, there is no question of Vedas sanctioning
ill treatment of widows or women. No Dharma sastras sanctionill treatment to
any living being, let alone human beings.

Q5 What is the legend about the  Murudeswara temple ?

A5    Thename "Murudeshwara" means Shiva or Ishwara. The significanceof this
holy town dates to the time of Ramayana.

By penance dedicated to the Atma Linga, the divine Lingam of Shiva procures
invincibility and immortality to the HinduGods. Ravana, the Lanka King
Worshipped Shiva with  devotion to attain immortality by obtainingthe Atma
Linga.

Lord Shiva appeared before Ravana andasked him what he wanted. By this time
Lord Vishnu changes Ravana's mind at thebehest of Narada. Asa result of  this
plot, Ravana asks forGoddess Parvathi, and Lord Shiva offers him. On his way
back to Lanka Narada tricksRavana that the real  Parvathi was inPathala.

So Ravana lets off Parvathi and  went to Pathala and marries a king's
daughterthinking   that she was Parvathi. When he returnsback to Lanka his
mother then asks for Linga.

And this time, Ravana requests theAtmaLinga as his boon. Lord Shiva agrees to
fulfil the boon on the conditionthat it should never be placed on the ground.
It is believed that theAtmaLinga was ever placed on the ground, all the powers
would return to LordShiva again.

Having obtained his boon, Ravana started backon his journey  o Lanka. Sage
Narada, realised that with the AtmaLinga,  Ravana mayobtain immortality and
create havoc on earth, approached the Lord Ganesh tohelp him.

As Ravana was nearing Gokarna, Lord Vishnublocked the sun  to make it appear
asdusk. Ravananow had to perform his evening rituals but was worried because
with the AtmaLinga in his hands, he would not be able to do his rituals.

At this time, Lord Ganesh, disguised as aBrahmin boy came near to him. Ravana
requested him  to hold the AtmaLinga until he performed hispuja, and told him
not to place it on theground. Ganesh struck a deal with him saying that he
would call Ravanathrice and if Ravana did not return within that time, he would
place  the AtmaLinga on the ground. Aspredicted, before Ravana could return
after completing his rituals, Ganesh hadalready placed the AtmaLinga on the
ground.

Vishnu then removed his illusion andit was daylight again. Ravana gotreally
angry that he was tricked and tried to uproot the AtmaLinga and destroyit but
could not.

In a fit of rage he threw the casecovering  it to a place calledSajjeshwara, 23
miles away. Then he threw the lid of the case to a placedcalled Guneshwara
(now Gunavanthe) andDhareshwara, 10-12 miles away. Finally, he threw the cloth
covering theAtmaLinga to a placed called Mrideshwara in Kanduka-Giri (Kanduka
Hill).

Mrideshwara has been renamed toMurudeshwara.

Q6 Do Marudesawara is temple on a hill top?

by the waters of the Arabian Sea.
