CULTURAL QA04-2022-15 Dear friends,
I wish all my group friendsfrom Kerala a happy vishu Gopalakrishnan 15-4-2022 BEING A COMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS Q1 How much energy isconsumed by 1.5 ton 5 star split AC in 1 hour at a 27 degrees Celsiustemperature setting? A1 Ganesh Shetty Answered May 20, 2017 Every brand will have its own rating specified on the AC unit. Generallyit will be some where from 1000 watts to 2000 watts. For precise rating you may see thedetails mentioned on the AC external unit. There is no direct relation between the set temperatureand the consumption per hour. Despite you set the AC at 18 degreesor 25, the consumption will remain the same provided you set the thresholdpoint where the AC unit will monitor the room temperature and stop thecompressor when the unit senses the set temperature. 2nd answer- AjaiVaidyanathan Harihareswaran Answered Oct 24, 2017 1 Ton Rating is equivelnt to 3.5KW of heat is removed at any instant. 1.5 tons equivalent = 5.25 KW ofheat. 3.5 should be the energy efficiency ratio of 5 star AC. Ratio of the cooling capacityto the power Input. is called energy efficiency ratio. Other factors such as age, actual value and the rated value are to be taken into consideration to come tothe conclusion of how much power is drawn from the supply. How much reduction in the temperature had taken place to reach 27 degreesare also important. Your question requires too many data but there is nothingother than the capacity, energy efficiency ratio and the temperature measured before and after the AC is switchedON My note- In Chennai it issummer with temperatureabove 35 degrees from about 11 AM to 5PM. Night it is above 30 degrees. With a good AC unit of 1.5 ton capacity, average power consumption is above 12 units if AC is switched ON from 9.30PM to6AM. Calculating @Rs 5-00 per unit it isabout 60-00 per day. Q2 This might be a bit ofa dumb question because I don’t know much about electricity, but why does ittake so long for a phone to charge? It seems like it should be 100% chargedmoments after it’s plugged in, since electricity is all fast and stuff. A2 Andrew McGregor PerformanceMeasurement Lead at Fastly (company) (2019–present)Apr 5 It’s not actually a dumb question. Electricity can be very fast. But there are always limits, especially if what you want isn’t explosions and fire. So, any kind of wire has a limit to how much power it can deliver withoutgetting hot and catching fire… that’s how much energy over how long a period oftime. Rule of thumb, skinny wire, not much power, big fat wire, lots of power. So, your phone’s charge cable is a skinny wire… not much power, thereforeto deliver the fairlylarge amount of energy it takes to run the phone for a day takes a bit of time. But that’s not the ultimate limit on phone charging. Batteries involve somechemistry, and there’s a limit to how fast you can make them do that chemistrywithout breaking down their structure. Breaking down structure in a battery leads to, you guessed it,explosions and fire. So the phone’s charge circuit, theactual charger (which is part of the phone) knows what the limits of thebattery are, and will stay within them too. So, the fastest you can expect any phone to charge to full from nearlyempty is about 20minutes, with current battery technology. The exact same time limitapplies to electric cars, although it obviously takes a really chunky cable tocharge a battery that big in 20 minutes. My note- Smart phones requireabout 3 hours for full charging. Q3 What is the point ofan eject button on a USB if you can just manually take it out after you'redone? A3 FxTrader Studied atUniversity of New South Wales (Graduated 1900)Apr 4 Because good, fast computers use a large cache to enable them to appearthey can do several things simultaneously when in reality they are just doingone thing at a time i.e. the computer prioritizes jobs so that the operatordoes not need to sit there waiting for a process to finish before going on thenext job. Writing data to a USB is slow so not a priority process unless youmake it so, therefore the computer will do the actual writing and directoryupdating when it becomes idle, this could happen sometime after you think youhave written to the USB, in fact, the computer might even write to the USB notall at once but in several bursts i.e. you are done sending data to the USB stick but thecomputer isn’t done writing to it. Removing the USB device without 1st tellingthe computer to stop doing everything else and finish the writing to that portwill leave the USB device with only partial files and no updated directory, inother words… corrupted. Because of the cache and prioritizationprocess, you are also advised not to switch off the computer from the mains (anunclean shutdown or unsafe shutdown), but rather go through the shutdownprocess which will empty the cache before turning the power off. My note- I have seen ejectionbutton in pen drives, but in USB ejection button is a new information. In discs there was button for projection and closing. Probablyspecialised computers may be having. Q4 At what point in lifedo older Indian people normally stop caring about what they look like? A4 GopalkrishnaVishwanath Lived 69 years so far. No regrets. Look forward to the best yearsnow. Sun I am 72. I am Indian. Therefore I am eligible to answer this question I still care what I look like. I comb my hair regularly. I never stepoutside my apartment without a quick look at myself in the mirror to see if myhair is properly in place. I can reconcile with thechanges that are inevitable due to aging like grey hair, and thinning of thehair over the scalp. But I will never leave it disheveled. I am particular about what I am wearing when Istep out. While at home I move around in Bermuda shorts and a T-Shirt, I alwayschange into track pants when I go out. If I am going to the city, I wear propertrousers and even track pants are not enough. I don’t delay my haircut. Usually, it is once in 6 weeks. It used to be oncea month before. Nowadays I am able to postpone a haircut by two weeks as hairgrowth is slower and there is less of it than there used to be. Even if I am tempted sometimes to care less about the way I am dressed orhow I appear there is my wife who is firm in seeing that I don’t look shabby. She keeps a hawk-eye on my mustache and ensures itdoes not droop over my upper lip. The day it touches my lips I am ordered toget it trimmed. This is how I look nowadays when I am dressed up for a nice occasion.Hereis another picture of me when I delivered a speech to an elite gathering in a 5star hotel a few years ago.Now you decide if I care about my looks or not.(picturesnot added) I will never stop caring about what I look like. Even on the last day ofmy life, I would like to look presentable to my Creator when I go up to meetHim. My note- Irrespective of agewomen care more about their appearance. Q5 What are the longstrips that appear while peeling a banana? A5 Ayanokouji Kiyotaka Stupidenough to count stars 22h Those banana strings that we usually throw away are called phloem bundles. Phloemis a tissue found in plants. It is responsible for the transport of water andnutrients in a plant, providing it with enough nutrients to grow. Phloem bundledoes exactly that. Those banana strings transport water, nutrients, and sugarto the different parts of the banana as it ripens. Phloem bundles are just asnutritious as the rest of the banana. They are full of fiber, vitamin A, vitamin B6, etc. If you still find them disgusting, just make a smoothie and you won’teven notice them. Q6 As a South Indian, what North Indian food item made you cry out of happiness? A6 Bhuvana Rameshwar Bornand bred a S. Indian Apr 2 A few of my favourites, enough to make me cry with joy. Hot jalebis.. Hot, Crispyoutside and juicy inside Cool Rasgullas.. Bigger thannormal, Juicy Paneer butter Masala.. Withnaan Aloo paranthas.. Hot, thick, topped with extra butter Q7 Why do Americans buildwooden houses? A7 Ben Waggoner I livehere. Apr 2 Because if we made our housesout of pasta, they wouldn’t stay up very well. I’m still not sure how to put this more plainly. Building materials tendto be bulky, heavy, and difficult to transport for long distances. Ergo, peopletend to build houses out of materials that don’t have to be transported far. In much of the US, that’s wood, and it’s been that way for centuries. We still have some treesgrowing here and there. Some of them are suitable for building purposes, onceyou cut them up a bit. Judging by the number of European Quorans who find this fact astonishing,I can only assume that Europe is a desolate stony wasteland, where everyonelives in either medieval castles, or wattle-and-daub hovels. I might add that I grew up in abrick house, and brick is pretty common as a building material everywhere Ihave been in the US. Also, inthe area where I now live, the local sandstone makes attractive walls in someof the local houses. This is a historic home in a nearby town, and the walls,at any rate, are made of stone, although I daresay you could find some wood inthe construction if you were to look closely. Q8 When should youreplace your toilet tank? A8 Jared Wilson, Engineer(2000-present)Answered 44m ago This is not something thatpeople normally do. I've beento many different stores since I bought my home, and I have never seen a toilettank for sale. It's always the entire toilet that is for sale. That being said, if there's something wrong with your toilet tank like itbeing cracked or whatever your problem is, your best bet is to replace theentire toilet. This also ensures that the tank will fit on the base and theywill match each other. PS…many times the parts inside of the toilet tank are in need ofreplacement, and this is easy to do because all those parts are sold inhardware stores. 2ND ANSWER-LarryMorgan , Application Engineer - retired at General Electric Answered 1h ago Only when you replace the toilet. I don’t think a tank would even beavailable separately from the base. If the tank is physically damaged, thenreplace the toilet. If the parts inside the tank have failed, you can replacethose parts (flapper, filler, float, etc.). My note- if they mean the tankproviding water supply for flushing, in Chennai, India it is available with Parry ware etc. I had my clay flushchambers cracked in two years afterinstallation in three toilets, fibre tanks were fitted by Parry ware company onnominal charge Q9 Is methane lighterthan air? Would it function as a lifting gas? A9 David Thomas ProfessionalEngineer, Civil, Alaska Updated Apr 8 Yes, methane is lighter than air. Methane weighs 0.0424 pounds percubic foot while air is 0.0766 (at 60F and 30″ mercury). So every cubic foot of methane has the differenceof 0.0766–0.0424 = 0.0342 pounds of buoyancy. If you want to lift a 150-pound human, you’d need 4386 cubic feet of gas,but the container weighs something. If you kept the balloons, lines and harnessto 150 pounds, then a 8800 cubic foot volume would lift the human andlighter-than-air craft. This has been done, most famously by truck driver LarryWalters in 1982 to go to 16,000 feet, disrupt air traffic and get somecitations from the FAA. (there are additional tiers of balloons above those in the photo). He actually used helium with agreater buoyancy and therefore didn’t need as much volume and he didan admirable job of minimizing the weight (and cost) of his “equipment”: He, unsurprisingly to me, found it to be very cold at 16,000 and shot outa few too many balloons with a BB gun and semi-crashed into some power lines. I use methane for a lot ofbackyard science projects with the kids due its flammable and lighter-than-airproperties. You can, forinstance, have buoyant party balloons for a penny worth of natural gas andavoid the cost of using helium. Letting methane bubble up through a bucket ofsoapy water creates upward-floating methane bubble clouds which can be ignited(in winter, when snow is on the ground) by hand or with flaming arrows which isthe kind of thing at our birthday parties that the kids love but which makesthe moms nervous. It’s not really an explosion - more of a moderately fast burn. Do NOT pre-mix methane withair or oxygen unless you have appropriate hearing and eye protection in place- that will be an explosion and even a 4-inch balloon with methane and oxygenis quite loud, IME. A 1-foot-diameter balloon of pre-mixed air and fuel couldbreak windows. Q10 Does aluminium rust likeiron? A10 Justin Rodrigo StudiedScience at Loyola Jesuit College (Graduated 2022)Apr 6 No. Rust is hydrated iron(III) oxide. The hydrated partis important - normal iron (III) oxide isn’t porous, but the hydrated one is.That’s why rust can spread throughout the metal. While aluminium is much morereactive than iron, it’s oxide isn’t porous, and so, instead of aluminium“rusting” (I think corroding is a better term but whatever), a protectivecoating of aluminium oxide will be formed.
