A1 Sarvajanik  public Durga pujas are also organized  like the Ganapati 
festival in Mumbai andother cities in Maharashtra - where large sized idols of 
the deity areinstalled and worshipped by thousands of devotees. 

Q2 What are theattributes of Murudeshwara  Shiva Templein UTTARA KARNATAKA

A2 Thespectacular 36 meter-high monumental idol of Lord siva  stands next to 
anequally staggering 249 feet tall  RajaGopura, which is considered the tallest 
Gopura in the world.  

Murudeshwaratemple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, lies in the holy beach town in the 
Bhatkal Taluk of Uttara Kannada district inthe state of Karnataka, India, 
situated between Honnavar and Bhatkal town(about 12kms) Theidol  of Shiva here 
is the world'stallest and it lies on the coast of  theArabian Sea.

A3 In WestBengal the blooming of Kaash, a white flower, resembling a paddy crop 
with asweet fragrance is said to be the harbinger of Durga festival.

The pujas get offon the fifth day of Navarathri when a Bodhan Puja is done to 
welcome thegoddess.  Installation of a kalashfollows.

  Then there is a puja every morning tillDussehra.  The important puja among 
themis the Sandhi Puja which is performed when the eight day ends and the ninth 
daybegins and when 108 oil lamps are lit. It is believed this is an auspicious 
moment when a new life began onearth as per mythology.

Bengal believe that Goddess Durgacomes maternal home, mike, during the puja and 
returnsto her matrimonial home, sasural, after immersion.

A4 The variousavatharas as found Bhagavadha Purana could be considered as a 
good authority. BhagavadhaPurana mention the following Avatharas by Lord Vishnu.

1. Varaha, 2.Kapila (son of Devahoothi and Kardama), 3. Nara Narayana, son of 
Murthi,Daksha's daughter, 4. Rishabha son of Nabhi and Meru Devi, 5. Narasimha, 
6.Kurma (Tortoise), 7. Vamana, 8. Matsya (Fish), 9. Rama, 10. Datta as son 
ofAnasuya and Atri, 11. Parasurama, 12. Krishna.

Q5 Where do we havethe 108 diyva desams in India?Which of them are very famous?

A5 The break-upof the locations of these divya desam temples is: Tamil Nadu-82, 
Kerala-13,Andhra Pradesh-2, Gujarat-1, Uttarakhand-3, Uttar Pradesh-4 and 
Nepal-1. 

Among the veryfamous temples in this list are: Ranganatha temple at Srirangam, 
the Balajitemple at Tirumala, the Anantha Padmanabha temple in 
Thiruvanan-thapuram, theParthasarathy temple in Chennai, Badrinath (one of the 
Char-dhams) inUttarakhand & Muktinath in Nepal, the last two located in the 
Himalayas.

daysriding a taxi

Many taxidrivers not only knew their specific locations and timings but also 
the mobilenumbers of every priest at Kumbha konam area.

A7 The eighteenchapters of the Bhagavad-Gita are found in the 
Bhisma-parva(23-40), of Mahabharata which was compiled by Veda Vyasa.

A8 “Samudra-manthan"-,during which a host of divine celestial objects came up. 
Prime among these wereGoddess Lakshmi, the daughter of the king of the milky

subsequently married toLord Vishnu on the same darkest night of the year and 
brilliant lamps wereilluminated and placed in rows to mark this holy occassion.

A10 TheBhagavata Purana tells us about Narakasura, an evil demon king who had 
managedto acquire awesome powers. Unrivalled in prowess, he conquered both the 
heavensand earth and was tyrannical in his reign. Addicted to power, he even 
stole theearrings of Aditi, the heavenly mother goddess, and usurped some of 
herterritory. 

When LordVishnu was incarnated as Krishna in the Dwapara Yuga, he killed 
Narakasura onthe day preceding Diwali and rescued 16,000 women whom the demon 
had imprisonedin his palace. The deliverance from the terrible Narakasura was 
celebrated withmuch grandeur, a tradition that continues to this day.

Q11 Do Naraka thedemon  was the son of Satya bhama?

A11 In SouthIndia the name used for Deepavali is Narakachaturdasi.Chaturdasi is 
thefourteenth day of krishnapaksha. This day is dedicated to Naraka. Naraka is 
an asura,  the son ofSatyabhama.Satyabhama is said to be an incarnation of 
Lakshmi or Fortune.

Malappuramdistrict?

A12 . Accordingto local myths, the idol of Lord Hanuman was consecrated by 
Vasishta, one of the Saptharishis 3000 years ago. Even though the main deity 
isof Lord Rama, the temple is famously known as Hanumankavu temple. 

The deity ofHanuman is in a standing posture with face turned to one side and 
both handspressed together in a worshipping posture. It looks as if He is 
listening tosomething that Lord Rama is saying.
