Q1 What is the legend about “PeterPandian”  saved by Madurai Meenakshi as agirl?

A1 One night the Madurai city experiencedhuge thunder storm with lightning.
Peter was inside his bungalow in deepslumber. Suddenlya three-year-old girl
appeared at his residence and dragged Rous Peter by hishand outside the house.
As soon asthey left the compound, a lightening struck the building and the
bungalowcollapsed to piecesand destroyed the room, where the collector was
sleeping.

Everything happenned within fewseconds. Peter was taken aback and was in total
shock. Soon hecame back to himself, and found the mysterious little girl
walking away.

He immediately followed her.though he ran after her, he could not keep up with
the girl. The tiny totalways seemed to be the same distance away in front of
Peter, however fast hewalked.

She playfully entered theMeenakshi Temple and went straight to the Sanctum
Sanctorum of Meenakshi... and rightin front of his eyes... there she
disappeared.

Peter was sure that the empressHerself has come in the form of that mysterious
girl. For Shri Matha everyone -including Peter is her Child. The Ruler
Meenakshi had come to save a good manfrom calamity.

Peter was ever-grateful toMother Meenakshi and donated many jewellery and other
gifts to the MinakshiTemple.Among which, a notable one is a set of golden
stirrups studded with diamondsand red stones to the temple for use on the idol
of Sree Meenakshi when takenin procession in the streets of Madurai.

He also wished that after hisdeath he should be buried in a position that
enabled his eyes to face thetemple. Itis interesting to note that Rous Peter’s
grave is positioned the way he wishedwhile the Other graves faces the other way.

The stirrups offered by PeterPandiyan adorns the Horse Vaahanam on the day of
procession. Even now thisis used when Goddess Meenakshi riding the horse is
taken out during festivaldays.  He also donated a Jade necklacewhich is still
preserved, in the temple museum.

Q3 Who was sage Ashta vakra? Whatare the brief details of Ashtra vakra samhita?

A3 Ashtavakra is described asone born with deformities in eight limbs of the
body (two feet, two knees, twohands, the chest and the head). In Sanskrit,
Ashtavakra means "onehaving eight bends".

Ashtavakra is the author of the workAshtavakra Gita, also known as Ashtavakra
Samhita, a treatise on the instructionby Ashtavakra to  king Janaka about
theSelf. Ashtavakra is the Guru of the king Janaka and the sage Yajnavalkya. He
was12 years old when he taught this to Rajarshi Janaka.

Ashtavakra Gita presents thetraditional teachings of Advaita Vedanta. The work
was known, appreciated andquoted by Ramakrishna and his disciple Vivekananda,
as well as by other wellknown gurus.Radhakrishnan refers to it with great
respect.

In Ramayana Ashtavakra is firstreferenced in a single verse of Yuddha Kanda in
Valmiki's Ramayana. WhenDasaratha comes to see Rama from heaven after the war
of the Ramayana, he tellsRama,

O son! I have been conveyedacross (redeemed) by you, who are a deserving son
and a great being; like thevirtuous Brahmin Kahola [was redeemed] by [his son]
Ashtavakra.  6.119.17

In Mahabharata,In the Vana Parvaof the Mahabharata, the legend of Ashtavakra is
described in greater detail. Onlosing the game ofdice with the Kauravas, the
five Pandava princes and Draupadi are exiled fortwelve years. On their
pilgrimage, they meet the sage Lomasha, who shows theriver Samanga to
Yudhishthira.

Lomasha says that this is thesame river, on bathingin which the deformed
Ashtavakra was cured of his eight deformities. On beingasked by Yudhishthira,
Lomasha narrates to the Pandava princes the legend ofAshtavakra, which forms
three chapters of the Mahabharata.
