Is there any solutions told in our Vedic books aboutit? A3 This is grey area in sanatana dharma. The solutionavailable is hazy. If there are no sons, one may adopt his daughter as a sonand she is called "putrika".(also called putrikaputra). She mayperform all duties of a son. As an alternative, during her marriage, the father may extract an assurance fromthe daughter and son in law that the son to be born to the daughter is given asan adopted son to her father. He is then called "Putrika putra". "There are two passages in the Rig-veda whichrefer to the case where a daughter isthe only child of the family." ( RV I124.7, RV III 31.1). "Yaskaquotes one of these to explain the legal position of the only daughter. According to his interpretation(Nirukta II.5), it means that a brother less maiden even after she has beengiven away in marriage, can perform thefuneral rights of her father. Not only does this give her the right toinherit the property, but it shows that she is legally recognized as equal to ason"(page 4- secondedition 1954.) This important QA is based on a posting by esteemed memberSri Shivasankara rao on the topic Re:Some queries on Sanatana Dharma.(ONLY DAUGHTERS) in US Brahmins groups on15-8-2012 Q4 How Sage Apastambagot his name so? A4 The authorship of Apastamba Shrauta Sutra andApastmba Yajna Paribhasha pertaining to procedures in vedic yajnas; Apastambagrihya sutra laying down procedures for domestic rituals and Apastamba DharmaSutra on laws of individual and social conduct is attributed to Sage Apastamba. There is a story in Brahma Puranam about how he got hisname. Once a brahmin wasabout to perform his yearly sraadha. He could not find a suitable brahmin forvaranam in pitrusthana. He prayed to his pitrus, visvedevas and Lord MahaVishnu. Suddenly a brahmin appeared before him. The Sraadha was conducted. At the end, he was asked tripti(satisfaction). Honest as he was, he denied satisfaction. If the bhoktadenies satisfation then the sraadha is rendered fruitless. The annoyed performer of the sraadha, cursed the brahmin by taking water in his palm and throwing it on him. The brahmin with his tapa shaktimade the water to stop midway. Apa - water. Stamba - stopped still. Thereafter he became known asApastamba. A7 According to Markandeya Puran, Mahishasur was a verypowerful demon who could change his body from human to buffalo and back to human (this iswhy he was called Mahishasur). Hedefeated all gods and drove them awayfrom heaven. All gods went to Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha and prayedto them for help. None of them had the power to defeat Mahishasur. However, knowing the plight of the gods Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha, indra, Varun, suryadeo and etc., all joined their forces and produced a very tall, beautiful and powerful lady. She had eight hands and she wasriding on a tiger and every god gave her one of their weapons to fightMahishasur. Like Bhagwan Vishnu provided her with Chakra, Varun gave herShankha (conch), Shankar gave her trishul, Kaal gave her sword, ocean gave herlotus flower and other gods contributed many other things to her. She foughtMahishasur and in the process eight other powerful Durgas came out of her bodyto fight and kill other powerful demons fighting with Mahishasur. On ninth day of the battle Mahishasur and his army wasdestroyed and gods regained their places in heaven and every one on earth, skyand heaven was happy. This period is celebrated as navarathri and fromOctober 16 to 23 is during this year 2012.Hindus worship goddess Durga. Many keep fast and prayin the morning and evening hours.
