Dasavatharam is never spoken anywhere until we read the matsya puranam, Smd
Bhagavatham etc -a later period. The concept of dasavatharam is pertaining
to Vaishnavism that took place around 1000 AD. Different avatarams are
discussed even after Ramayanam . However as an avatharam of 10 to 23 and
25, 26 are recited within 2000 years. This is discussed in detail in the
book MATSYA PURANA A STUDY BY V S AGARWAL. " The doctrine of
incarnation (*avatāra
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/avatara#purana>*) is a special
feature of Vaiṣṇavism
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/vaishnavism#hinduism>. Lord Viṣṇu
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/vishnu#purana> comes down to earth
assuming the form of a man or an animal for fulfilling some specific
purpose. These forms of Viṣṇu are called his avatāras
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/avatara#purana>. The *Matsyapurāṇa
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/matsyapurana#purana>* says that Lord
Viṣṇu takes birth whenever He finds it necessary to re-establish *dharma
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/dharma#purana>*.[1]

In the *Śrīmadbhagavadgītā*, Lord Kṛṣṇa
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/krishna#purana> declares that
whenever there is decline of righteousness and unrighteousness is in the
ascendant, He will incarnate himself:

*yadā* *yadā*
*hi dharmasya glānirbhavati bhārata
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/bharata#purana>/abhyutthānam
adharmasya tadātmānaṃ*
*sṛjāmyaham//paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṃ*
*vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām/dharmasaṃsthāpanāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge//* [2]

When injustice, lawlessness abounds in the universe Viṣṇu takes
incarnations in different forms in this earth by His power of *māyā
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/maya#purana>*. It is stated that for
the destruction of the demons and for the welfare of the world Lord Viṣṇu
takes incarnation.[3]

According
to the *Matsyapurāṇa*, Bhṛgu
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/bhrigu#purana>’s curse to Lord Viṣṇu
to be born seven times on the Earth for his offence of beheading his wife
is also regarded as the reason of the earthly incarnation of Viṣṇu.
Mahāviṣṇu <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/mahavishnu#hinduism> became
seven times the son to Aditi
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/aditi#purana>.[4]

The purpose and functions of different avatāras are described in the Purāṇas
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/purana#purana>. The *Matsyapurāṇa* has
given detailed descriptions of different avatāras in its different
chapters. Regarding the number of avatāras there are differences in
different Purāṇas. Generally the avatāras are regarded as ten in number.

The popular *daśāvatāras
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/dashavatara#hinduism>* (ten
incarnations) are:

   1. Matsya <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/matsya#purana>,
   2. Kūrma <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/kurma#purana>,
   3. Varāha <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/varaha#purana>,
   4. Vāmana <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/vamana#purana>,
   5. Narasiṃha <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/narasimha#purana>,
   6. Paraśurāma <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/parashurama#purana>,
   7. Rāma <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/rama#purana>,
   8. Kṛṣṇa,
   9. Buddha <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/buddha#purana> and
   10. Kalki <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/kalki#purana>.
