CULTURAL QA 05-2022-13 BEING A COMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 For a4" brick wall, do we require a foundation? A1 Gopala Krishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered just now It is not clear whether it is a load bearing wall.In a pillar construction, load is taken by pillars. Walls are only forseparation and covering. Normallyouter walls are constructed thick and foundation is first made and wall israised. In Chennai, India, separation walls in ground floor areraised on foundation. In second and floors above walls are just raised over RCClaid Q2 Inlong-distance trains, how do drivers and guards ensure that all the railwayemployees (security, TT, drivers, etc.) have changed the shifts in the shiftchange railway station? A2 Raghavendra Varma Former Retired FromIndian Railways Mon Driver and guard are in communication with each otherthrough Walkie-talkie. Other rly staff know about thestoppage time and report to train in advance .the stoppage is also keptslightly more at crew changing stations to take care of change of crew . Q3 Why do airconditioners drop in performance during peak summers? A3 Godrej Appliances Thoughtfully madeappliances for a better life. Wed Air conditionerstend to underperform during peak summers. This phenomenon is known as derating. It is theprocess in which the cooling capacity of the air conditioner drops to preventundue stress on the machine when external ambient temperature rises. In other words, a 1.5 ton rated AC could operate like a 1 tonrated AC when temperatures go up in peak summers . Though this process can’t be completely avoided, withsuperior design it is possible to reduce derating while ensuring that productdurability is not compromised. Godrej air conditioners have been designed toderate by not more than 20% in peak summers, even in temperature ranging at 48degrees compared to ACs of leading brands which are found to derate by as highas 40%. At the same time, the ACs are designed and engineered to ensure lastingperformance. The graph belowexplains the percentage drop in the cooling capacity with the increase in theambient temperature. Clearly where aGodrej AC behaves like a 1.2-ton AC, competition product is seen to operate at0.9 ton. My note- The QA is added for information about derating and not in any way promoting GodrejAC Q4 Why didthey stop making 100 watt light bulbs? A4 Scottie Odom Electrical Engineer zappedone too many times Updated May 8 Because they were hideously inefficient. The standardincandescent light bulb is made with a double coil of tungsten suspendedbetween two wires. When you turn on the bulb, 120VAC crosses the filament andheats up to such a high temperature that it glows brightly. The more watts, themore power you used and thus the brighter the filament. This design was already lessefficient by the 1930’s, as fluorescent bulbs had been invented, buttheir biggest issue was they had to be very long and often took time to reachfull brightness. Then in 1976 the compact fluorescent lamp came out, andit began the slow decline of the incandescent bulb. While the CFL was more efficient, it wasn’t really meant to replace theincandescent at first, as it suffered from the same problem as the long tubesdid of taking a while to come on. An incandescent bulb, meanwhile, was nearlyinstant, and didn’t have Mercury in it. Still, the incandescent bulb’s title ofking of convenient lighting was already starting to look shaky. You see, in 1972the other invention that would spell the end of the incandescent wasdiscovered: Blue LEDs. We’d known about red and green LEDs for a while, butwithout blue we couldn’t create pure white light. While it would still take avery long time for the LEDs to make it into lamps, they were starting to getmade, and the electronics boom of the 1980’s spearheaded their manufacture. The death knell came in the early 2000’s when PresidentGeorge W. Bush signed a law that would ban the manufacture of incandescentbulbs. Around the same time, LED bulbs were droppingin price, and the lack of Mercury made them a safer alternative to the CFL anda much more energy efficient option compared to the incandescent. Thanks for reading. EDIT: So there area LOT of comments about how people only want to buy incandescent bulbs, or theyhate flicker from LEDs, all that. Fine. I’m just explaining why they don’t makeincandescent bulbs anymore. If you don’t like LEDs or CFLs or anything likethat, then that’s your prerogative to buy incandescent bulbs from othernations. If you want them that bad, go for it. No need to explain for the 10thtime that you don’t like LEDs. We get it. MY NOTE- except the 15 watts or 10 watts night lamp bulbsall others are LED bulbs in shops in Chennai. Howevermany homes have still the incandescent bulbspurchased and kept as spare, and CFL purchased before years and not used. Q5 What canyou do to save money on health care if you don't have insurance? A5 Prasanna Bhalerao M. Sc. in Electronics& Physics, Fergusson College, PuneMon You can build yourown health care fund. For example, in India, a young couple (35/30), standardlife habits, decent current health condition, no smoking and alcohol habits, etc., a full comprehensive medical insurance, no sub-limits, etc, of ₹5 lakhs cover per person per year in the family, can cost around ₹24,000 per year.If the couple deposits ₹2,000 per month asan SIP in an equity MF and increase the amount by ₹1000per month and limiting to ₹10,000 per monthmax (after 8 years), one can build a very tidy corpus. But one shouldn't doafter 8~10 years, but continue as long as possible. Meanwhile, all the whileduring working life, there exists the employer's health insurance cover. If you keep healthy habits, exercise regularly, checkyour health every year, take precautions, you may not ever require to visit ahospital. What is more this corpus is always available to you. However,in modern times of stress, tension, long working hours, fear of job loss, irregular eating times, junk food, irregular exercise, pollution, etc. takes a huge toll. If you don'thave insurance when you retire, an insurance will bevery expensive at that time. Hence external health cover is recommended. But if one has built a health kitty, one may have to worry less. MY note-Many health schemes permit only members around 60 to join schemes. Then theycan continue. So one has to take healthcare policy atleast before 65 years. Q6 Chennai hasovergrown and become overcrowded. Why doesn’t Tamil Nadu build a new plannedcapital city? Is constructing a new city from scratch that impossible? A6 Badhrinath Kannan May 7 Chennai is fine. With the right investment ininfrastructure, it has the capacity to hold and support a much higherpopulation. Itsgrowth rate is fairly consistent and has been lower than manyother boom towns in India (like Bangalore, Hyderabad etc.) in the last decade. But you do raise an important point. Should the largestcity which also serves as its business center necessarily be the capital cityof a state? In todays world, there is no compellingreason for the state assembly to be located in Chennai or administrativedecisions to be taken only from Chennai. In fact geographically, it is nowherenear the center of the state - so state service headquarters (like disasterrelief, police etc.) take that much longer to reach the other corners of thestate than they would if the capital city was near the center of the state. Wouldn’t making another city such as Madurai the capitalcity help divert some of the government investment(especially in primary education and primary health etc.) to the Southern partof the state thereby helping more equitable development? Chennai anyway will get itsshare because it has such a huge say in the economic wellbeing of the state andalso has so many votes due to its population. The only real reason itcontinues to be the political-administrative center is because politicians ofall parties prefer it that way for a reason. Too many have invested theproceeds of corruption in real estate and business equity in the surrounding ofthe city. Q7 When shoulda family decide it's time for a new fridge? A7 BOSCH Home India Effortless living withBosch.3h The father needshis beverages absolutely chilled before the match. The mother needs ample spaceto store groceries and vegetables for her special salad. The grandparents needto keep their dry fruits fresh to enjoy them later in the evening. And,needless to say, dinner is incomplete if the kids don’t get their favourite icecream. With all these demands, it’s no surprise that the old fridge can’t keepup. But, every family needs a fridge that caters to everyone’s needs. That’swhen you know it’s time to get the Bosch Max Flex refrigerator - a fridge that’sflexible for you. The Max Flexcompartment seamlessly switches roles between fridge and freezer based on therequirement - be it dry fruits or desserts, there’s room for everything. Itsspecially crafted Crisper Box with VitaFresh Technology helps keeps vegetablesand fruits fresh for up to 10 days while 6 unique intuitive sensors provideoptimum cooling. To top if it off, the Max Flex refrigerator saves up to 40%energy while doing all this. My note- Aboveall it was a point of affordability before 2 decades. Now we can get a fridgefor Rs 25000with EMI facility. Most fridges give 10 years warranty and by about 12 yearsstart malfunctioning. Q8 Why do Ifeel sick if my blood glucose level is below 100 mg/dl? A8 Answered by Binay Mishra May 7 Low bloodsugar can cause a variety of symptoms, including shakiness, sweating, weakness, dizziness, and nausea. Normally when bloodsugar falls too low (below 70 mg/dL), the body reacts by releasing hormonessuch as adrenaline and glucagon to try to increase blood sugar levels. Thesehormones work by telling the liver to release stored glucose into thebloodstream, or by stimulating the breakdown of muscle tissue into glucose. However, these hormones also have other effects that can be harmful if they arepresent for long periods of time. If yourblood glucose level is low you can eat or drink something with sugar in it,like candy or fruit juice; eat some fast-digesting carbs like white bread or pasta. This will make you feel better. Q9 Can you putdetergent straight into a washing machine? A9 Gopala Krishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004) Answered justnow Itdepends on the washing machine. In semi automatic washing machines thedetergent /detergent liquid is directly added to water and soiled clothes are added and washing switchis operated to correct position. It is ensured the tub is closed by keepingswitch correctly. After washing once the drain is opened again water is filledand washed. After draining the clothes are put to drier for drying Q10 Is itpossible that there are undiscovered fossils out there of completely differentspecies of dinosaurs we never know of, or even unknown dinosaurs with noexistence of their fossils? A10 Claire Jordan Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Apr 24 Not only possible, but virtually certain. We have a snapshot of those species which were large, common and around for along time, and a few of the rarer or smaller ones, but there must have beenhundreds of thousands of species we don’t have samples of yet, and some wenever will.
