Q2           What are platelets?

A2           Lucia Garcia Worked at Hospitals Fri

The main componentsof blood are: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and
platelets.

Platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells areproduced in the bone marrow.

Platelets are muchsmaller than red blood cells and white blood cells, and are
only 20% thediameter of red blood cells.

Platelets are so small that they can only be seen under amicroscope. Platelets
make up less than 1% of the volumein blood.

Platelets areresponsible for coagulation and hemostasis, repairing damaged
blood vessels.

When the bodyis injured and bleeding, platelets rush to the site and form a
clot or plug tostop the bleeding.

The averageperson's platelet count is between 1.5 to 4 lakh per microlitre.

Causes of decreasedplatelet levels may include: smoking, alcohol abuse,
infections, cancer, aplastic anemia, megaloblastic anemia, autoimmune disorders,
certain medications and so on.

Eat more peanutswith the skin every day, you can quickly replenish platelets.

In addition, eatingfoods containing high-quality protein can also supplement
platelets, such aseggs, milk, fish, shrimp, beef, lamb, crab, oysters, etc.

My note- I faced a problem of low value probablydue to medications and I was in
ICU before 15 years. My son in law arranged 10packs of platelets from blood
bank, and DV, my body accepted and I am here to post this QA.

Q3           My electricity bill came at 6500 Rs.We have a 1500 sq ft house and
4 AC running average 4 hours each. Is it okay?

A3           Gopala Krishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered just now

I am trying to answer. You havenot mentioned what is the electricity charge
perunit in your area. You have also not mentioned the area of rooms and tonnage
ofAC units. I assume electricity charge is  Rs 6–00 per unit, 1.5 ton AC unit
in approximate 10′x10′ rooms and it is summer as inChennai

Without going tomore technical details onecan observe the difference of meter
readings at the same time every day andfind out the units consumed.

Roughly 4 AC unitsmay consume for 4 hours 40–50 units, depend on the
temperature set. Assuming50units and charge per unit 6–00 rupees, 300–00 rupees
per day. For 60 days(Bimonthly bill) 18000–00rupees. There are other overheads
like lights, fans, motors etc.Mostly AC might run at least for 12 hours a day
in summer. In my office room inChennai , AC unit runs from 6 AM to 11 PM. Your
billis very less.

Q4           Is steel just iron?

A4           Gregg Donald, Graduated from Schoolof Hard Knocks 2016Answered May

No it isnot just iron. Usually, steel is made of a dozen or more elements.

Engineers inmanufacturing plants decide what properties are needed for each
item made, andthen choose which type of metal performs best for each different
part.

Also, metals areheat treated to the desired hardness.

2ND ANSWER- Alex Duval , studied Psychology&Women's Studies at University of
GuelphAnswered May 18

Nope. Iron is iron. Steel is an alloy that uses iron, but includesother things.
There are many kinds of steel, it’s interesting tolearn about!

Q5           What are some tips for travelling insleeper coaches of trains?

A5           Himanshu Gupta Travel enthusiast Updated5y

Disclaimer: This is with special emphasis towards Indianrailways. I am also
assuming the worst case scenario inall the mentioned circumstances. You are
likely to find better services, but ona note of caution, this is the worst you
may get. So, be prepared.

Do not buy any eatables from the station basedwindow servicing vendors. Mostly
they are opportunist who try to sell cheapeatables made of unhygienic
ingredients. Some of them try selling theirinventories (which were not sold
yesterday or before), which could make youseriously sick. If your train does
not have a pantry (which many Indian trainsdo not have), preferbuying from an
authorised station vendor (you can find their stores near theentry gate or
waiting room).

2. Carrya blanket and sheet, if not, do not sleep face down! Nobody wipes off
the seatof the sleeper coach inIndian railways. If you take up a section of the
seat and do a DNA analysis, you could trace it back to generations. Carrying a
blanket will help you saveyour system from greeting some nasty germs.

3. Shit before you leave for the journey: Extremelyimportant! Sleeper coach
washrooms could be pathetic, most of the times. Settledown with the bowels
before you board the train. You might see somethinglike…gross, I am not adding
a picture of that.

4. Always carry a sanitiser: Wipe your hands before youeat.

5. Have yourentertainment unit geared up: Especially if it’s a long journey.
Have themcharged before you leave. Most old sleeper coaches do not have
(functional)charging points. Carrya good power bank, it will prevent you from
standing near the stinking toiletfor hours. If you are extremely lucky, you may
have a (functional)charging point near your berth. However, chances are low.

6. Have some emptybag space to keep the trash: You may find the common dustbin
over floodedalready and definitely would not want to throw the trash out or
litter around. Keep trash with you, throw themin dustbin once you are out of
the train.

7. Have an inflatable pillow: Will help you get agood sleep.

8. Carry a lock and chain to tie your stuff: Especiallyif you are on middle or
upper berth and the journey is overnight. You can sleeppeacefully knowing your
belongings are safe.

My note- Very few trains are havingcoaches in better condition than told. Only
in very few trains. Special trainsare charged highly and in worst condition

Q6           What is the best way to go fromChennai to Coonoor, Tamil Nadu?

A6           Arun Visvanathan Lives in Chennai,Tamil Nadu, India Wed

1 By Air. Fly to Coimbatore flight time about 1 hourand take a taxi (90 km/2
hours 45 min) or you can take a cab into town (12km/35 min) and take a bus (85
km/2hr 45 min)..

2 By Train. Take the Nilgiri aka Blue MountainExpress (dep 2115) to
Mettupalaiyam (arr 0715) and then take the heritageNilgiris Mountain Railway to
Ooty (0710 to 1200). The two trains are linked andthe NMR waits for the Blue
Mountain to arrive. The railway ride is itself atourist attraction.
Alternatively take any train from Chennai to Coimbatore andtake a taxi or bus
from Coimbatore.

The NMRirreverently known as the toy train at Mettupalaiyam station.

3 By Car. Drive via Ulundurpet and Salem toCoimbatore and then via
Mettupalaiyam to Ooty. Total distance is about 590 kmand the drive will take 11
hours 45 minutes without stops.

PS. When I was in school, the NMR wasn't a touristattraction. It was regular
transport. I lived in Delhi andcame with school party. We had a day halt in
Madras and then took the BlueMountain. Riding on the NMR, the train took a zig
zag path so we would getdown, climb the slope and wait for the train to catch
up and hop on again. I’msure we drove the teachers mad.

Q7           What are some delicious South Indiandesserts that most North
Indians have never heard of?

A7           Bharathi Lives in India Apr 8

In the Southern part of India, Elaneer Payasam is knownfor its subtle and
distinct flavour that is unlikeanything you’ve tasted before. Made with tender
coconut pulp mixed with condensed milk, thisquick version of kheer is a
brilliant addition to your daily meals.

Ashok halwa (or Asoka halwa) is a delicious dessertfrom Tamil Nadu that is made
on special occasions. One can call it a southIndian version of moong dal halwa,
but the difference is that moong dal halwa iscrumbly and dry while ashoka halwa
is more watery with a glossy, shiny look.

Muskoth halwa is prepared using Maida milk / All purposeflour milk and coconut
milk. It can be called as coconutmilk halwa too. Highlight of this halwa is its
made without adding a drop ofghee or oil. The oil releases from the coconut
milk makes the halwa glossy andflavorful.

Thoothukudi macaroon is a type of macaroon from the porttown of Thoothukudi, in
the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, influenced by Portuguese. While macaroons are
traditionally made from groundalmonds, these are made from egg whites, sugar,
and cashews.

Q8  I just ate 8 carrots at once. Will I be okay?I heard eating too many
carrots will turn you orange.

A8           Lucia Garcia Worked at Hospitals Apr30

Carrots arenutritious and an excellent source of beta-carotene. A medium-sized
carrotcontains about 4 mg of beta-carotene.

Beta-carotene, anorange-yellow fat-soluble compound, is also a natural pigment
that givescarrots its orange-yellow color.

After beta-carotene enters the body, it is converted intovitamin A under the
action of enzymes.

Vitamin A is one ofthe essential nutrients for the body. It can enhance vision,
promote growth anddevelopment, and improve immune function.

However, if you eattoo much carrot, the excess beta-carotene cannot be
converted into vitamin A intime, and thebeta-carotene that has not been
converted will enter the bloodstream.

This will lead tohigh levels of carotene in the blood. Excess carotene deposits
in the skin and subcutaneoustissue, resulting in a yellowing of the skin, A
Condition Known As Carotenemia.

Although carrotsare very nutritious and delicious, but they should not be eaten
in excess, just eat 1 to 2 carrots a day.

Q9           Why do street vendors in India likemixing the ingredients or touch
the food they are selling with bare hands? I'vebeen seeing a lot of videos on
Facebook recently and I became curious. Hope thequestion won't offend anyone.
Thank you!

A9           Aishwarya Kher A loyal lover ofvegetarian Indian cuisine May 15

There is nothingoffensive about the question. Let’s just face facts and accept
the reality.

Most street vendors in India are unable to maintain thedegree of hygiene that
we see in richer and less populated countries.

Reasons:

Affordability: In order to afford food grade glovesand upgrade their stalls to
a cleaner version, street vendors in India wouldneed to increase their prices
enormously. Likewise, lower income group whichdepends on these vendors for
daily food won’t be able to afford a very hygeinicone

Pricing: Increase in prices will drastically reducedemand, because of fierce
competition between street food vendors

Customer Base: Customers in India would run to avendor selling a Vada Pav at
₹10 instead of theone selling at ₹15 with gloves on.There is hardly any loyalty
if a cheaper tastier version of a street food isavailable

Preferences: The reason for choosing a street vendor inIndia is mainly price
and taste. Most regular customersdon’t care about the hygiene. The problems in
India are far worse thanwhy-is-the-street-vendor-not-wearing-gloves?

Immunity: They don’t care because most of us bornand raised in India are immune
to the impurities and some level ofcontamination in the street food and the
environment in general. Our bodies cantake it, but the ones coming from cleaner
countries would surely fall sick

Fast selling food: Food on the street is normallyprepared fresh and gets sold
pretty quick. The probability of it being stale orexposed to dust for a long
time is low. That much care is taken these days

Population: Serving a huge crowd of Indians in atimely fashion is difficult
while maintaining high levels of hygiene. Look atthe response time and speed of
these vendors while serving you. I don’t thinkthey can do it with gloves on.
They need to handle slippery food with barehands to target that speed

Culture: Handling food with bare hands is acultural thing in India.
Normallypeople don’t use spoons and forks to eat. Same applies to using bare
hands to cookand serve. It’s assumedthat they must have washed their hands
before.

Nevertheless, Iknow and totally acknowledge that food safety concerns remain in
Indiaespecially when it comes to hawkers and low priced street food.

So if you are justvisiting, please stick to eating at clean hygienic
restaurants for your ownhealth. There is nothing wrong or disrespectful about
doing that.

Q10         How important is education?

A10         Anwesha Barua (অন্বেষাবড়ুয়া)ObliviouslyCognizant Fri

This is the ladywho comes to my house to help me with my daily chores.

Apart from the factshe works with a private contractual manpower service, she
works for differenthouses doing house chores. And she is a very sweet lady who
speaks broken Hindiwith me to communicate and brings me all sorts of tasty food
cause she thinksthat I don't eat at all!

Also, she made medosa one day so I am happy.

Anyways, one day,she was talking about her kids - how many of them and what akk
are they doing! She specifically spoke about her youngest son, who is studying
in college. Iasked her what is she studying? She shrugged and told that she
doesn't know. Ilet it go cause she has no idea about it and I got busy with my
work.

But then she gaveher son a call to ask what is he studying. She kept on asking
what is hestudying actually and he said something which my madam didn't
understand atall. She was not convinced and then handed over the phone to me.
When I askedhe replied that he is studying Computer Applications. I said to my
madam thathe has opted for a good course which will land him a good job.

Hearing this, mymadam shrugged and folded her hands to pray to god, exclaiming
that since sheand her husband are illiterate, they have high hopes for their
son and theywant to educate him as much as possible.

She says that shedoesn't even know the spelling of her native place or her name
but it's whatshe has heard since childhood that has been able to make an
association with.

No matter what, education does give a sense of familiarity and responsibility.
The more welearn, the more cognisant we get and we are more true to ourselves.
Beingcompletely devoid of basic education, her sense of understanding of
theimportance of education and why we need to impart it to our children
inculcatedsuch respect in her.

Education is probably the best gift one can give tohis/her child and it is
probably one of the mostimportant aspects afterlife, maybe!
