CULTURAL QA05-2022-29 BEING A COMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Why do air conditioners drop inperformance during peak summers? A1 Godrej Appliances Thoughtfully madeappliances for a better life. May 11 Airconditioners tend to underperform during peak summers. This phenomenon is known as derating. It is the process in which the cooling capacity of theair conditioner drops to prevent undue stress on the machine when externalambient temperature rises. In other words, a 1.5 ton rated AC could operate like a 1 ton rated ACwhen temperatures go up in peak summers . Though thisprocess can’t be completely avoided, with superior design it is possibleto reduce derating while ensuring that product durability is not compromised. Godrejair conditioners have been designed to derate by not more than 20% in peaksummers, even in temperature ranging at 48 degrees compared to ACs of leadingbrands which are found to derate by as high as 40%. At the same time, the ACs aredesigned and engineered to ensure lasting performance. My note- QA is added for information aboutderating. Not to recommend the Godrejproducts in any manner. Q2 Will a washing machine start withoutwater? A2 Gopala Krishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered Wed Yes is the answer. I have personnel experiencebefore one year with my automatic front load washing machine. In some cyclesmachine was not running and used to get held up. First technician could not setright and second technician felt heating on motor. He checked the water inlet and found the pipe is fully blocked. Next day wecalled electrician cum plumber and found the ironpipe totally corroded and mixed with mud blocking water supply. Heremoved all the mud and corroded material hitting with a hammer using ascrewdriver in the pipe and removed all obstructions and reconnected now no problem. Manytimes semiautomatic machines I have started forgetting water line is notopened. The motor mayget heated and it may get damaged, but WASHING MACHINE will start. Q3 What microscopic organisms would behorrible to deal with if they were the size of mammals? A3 Ken Saladin Former professor ofhistology (microscopic anatomy)18h Ifby microscopic organisms you mean unicellular ones like bacteria, amoebae,Paramecium, yeasts, and the like—enlarged to the size of mammals, they’d be short-lived curiositiesthat would quickly self-destruct. They wouldn’t have the means to move around, threaten anyone, or even survive at that size. Q4 What did the discovery of Lucy mean? A4 Claire Jordan Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper May 22 At the time, she was the first goodspecimen of one of the Hominina(the group leading from us back to our split from the line leading to chimps)who was early enough and different enough from us to be considered prior togenus Homo. She told us that full bipedalism had already evolved at a time whenour brains were still fairly small. Lucy is no longer all that important, except for historical reasons,as we now have specimens of over 300 members of her species, at least one farmore complete. Q5 Are any animals known for keepingtrack of how many offspring they have in a litter? As in would they quicklynotice if one was missing? A5 Jaimes Roe 25+ years of studying, researching, and pondering cats Updated Wed Most mammals who have litters of youngwould notice. They can differentiate between numbers of things, and we can see how they reactto missing one of their offspring. Cats, for example, notice when a kittenis missing. Most won’t go looking for them right away, but they are more alert. Mostly, when a kitten wanders off, they come back. And if they don’t come back soon, they likely never will. Few feral mothers go look for thembecause they’re used to losing kittens. Only 25% of feral kittens survive. Housecatswill often look for them. They are comfortable with the territory, and they arewell fed and cared for, and there are no predators in a home. That means theydon’t lose kittens nearly as often. If a kitten is missing, there’s a goodchance they are alive and well if they get found in time. Soexperience often makes a big difference in how even two members of the samespecies would react in that situation. Q6 Can electrical outlets get wet? A6 Prashanth Suvarna , Consultant atSat1Cable& Internet (1990-present) Answered May 22 First let me clarify as to what is the purpose of your q. Just as fire and water do notand cannot stand one another, similarly electricity and electrical outlets Thatcontain usually high voltage Ac of usually 220v and water simply can't standone another also. That apart it is dangerous to connect it anywhere, as waterconducts electricity fairly well in order to deliver a severe jolt to anyonewho may unwittingly come into close contact with it resulting in and extremelyunnerving situation. There other side of the story is that the same can be donein a controlled environment like if you connect two plates seperated by aninsulator to your household Ac supply into a plastic bucket of water then it'sposs to use this contraption as a default water heater assuming that you stayfar away when it it's being done. I hope you understand. 2nd answer -Gopala Krishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered just now Surely. Need not be outsideor during rainy season . Even insideoutlets can get wet if they are near sink, wash basin etc. In concealed wiringelectrical outlets are taken to certain points by electrician. Later plumbersfind the location of sink, wash basin etc. near it. Nowadays mostly electricalsockets are controlled by switch. Before connecting equipment and switching on, one has to make sure thesocket is not wet in areas where it could be like near sink, wash basin etc. Inmy home two such outlets are provided over sink in work area. Reasoning was dish washer if installed later. I have connectedROS in one of them. The insulated plug (except in end )is inserted permanently. My wife and lady servant ensure the point is not made wet, though the outlet iswell above the sink. The other one I have disconnected the phase and insulatedand kept. I am proposing to shift the outlets nearto ROS so that fear they may get wet from sink usage is not there. Duringrainy season it is common due to low insulation, wetting can be there in powerwires outside. One hasto ensure the wires, outlets are not wet. Q7 What are your top 10 common senserules that you always follow? A7 Gopalkrishna Vishwanath Lived 69years so far. No regrets. Look forward to the best years now. Fri I always read anything that I write at least twicebefore posting. This does not eliminate all errors or typos but itremoves nearly all of them. I am particularly careful with numbers. A single wrong digit in the number can be disastrous, particularly if it is a telephone number or an amount of money. ****Idon't write and post when I am angry or upset. Ijot down points. I compose later and most of the stuff that I thought I wouldwrite either does not get written or gets watered down. Sometimes I write atnight and don’t post it. I wait till next morning. Sleep works wonders. It cools you down and often Ihave simply deleted the draft I wrote the previous night and felt better fornot sending it. This is better than “shooting off” a strong email ormessage and then being in suspense at what the consequences would be. I don’tenjoy retorting instantly. I avoid it. I wait and then give a measured responselater at my convenience. Before undertaking a long trip, I startmaking a check list of what to take, and what to attend to before departing. The check list is prepared at leasta day before leaving and kept near the main door and before I lock my door Itick off all items on the check list. Nowthat digital payments using my mobile phone are available I don’t carry toomuch cash. Rs 500 to Rs 1500 is my usual limit. I don’t trust my computer any moreafter at least three disk crashes in the past. I keep my important files in thecloud. Inever forward what I get on WhatsApp particularly if the content is notverified by me. I am particularly careful with gossipy, spicy or inflammatorystuff. Ireconcile to the fact that I can’t have all that I want, and I can’t controlothers all the time. I make do and become happy with what Ihave and I leave alone people I cannot influence. Beforetaking a risky decision, I ask myself if the reward for success is morevaluable than the loss in case of failure.I learn to differentiate between what I can do and what Ishould do. I do something if I feel I should, not because I want toshow someone that I can. Iconstantly keep in mind that I get only one chance to make a good firstimpression on someone. I go out of the way to see that I don’t goof up. My note- I am happy to include this QA.Mostmembers may understand the valuable points told in the answer and may think, if some members followed at least25% of it Q8 How much sleep does one require? A8 Ray Schilling Blogger, retiredphysician and cancer researcher. (2010–present)Mon On average it is best to sleep 7 to 8hours per night starting between 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM at night. I have summarized this herebefore: Ray Schilling's answer to What should everyone know about sleep? Here is the full text of the linkabove: “What should everyone know about sleep? Thereare a couple of facts that everybody should know about sleep so you work withnature, not against nature. 1.The way our bodies are hardwired, we need 7 to 8 hours of sleep, but we need to fall asleep between 10PMand 11PM. 2.The reason for the relative rigid sleeping schedule timewise is that there is the diurnal hormone rhythm that is dictated by the light of thesun (24 hour cycle). Light going into our eyes and melatonin productionfrom our pineal gland is what keeps the internal clock on time. We all know howwe derail when we fly east or west. I am more affected when I fly west thaneast, but the readjustment takes often one or two weeks for a 9 hour timedifference. 3. There is an interplay betweenmelatonin and cortisol. These two complement each other. When you sleep melatonin governs and resetsthe hormones to be ready in the morning. This involves an early testosteronepeak for the male; cortisolto be ready the moment you wake up, because cortisol coming from the adrenalglands rules during the day giving us energy. Thyroid hormones alsogive you energy during the day. As I will explain below, human growth hormonealso gives you energy and clears your mind. 4. But what is not as much known is that human growth hormone (GH)also gives us energy. There is a main growth hormone release (released as a spurt) between midnightand 3 AM when you're deep asleep. The purpose of that is to get you ready withregard to energy for the next day. If you drink alcohol after 5PM the afternoonbefore, you will miss that GH spurt at night and have a hangover (lack ofenergy the following day). At the 23 Annual World Congress on Anti-AgingMedicine on Dec. 13, 2015 in Las Vegas the endocrinologist, Dr. ThierryHertoghe from Belgium gave a talk about GH and said that even one drink the eveningbefore you go to sleep will cancel 75% of the GH spurt causing a lack of energythe following day. When you have alcoholic drinks evening afterevening as many people do, you interfere with your deepest sleep (you create afitful sleep) and you develop GH deficiency, which can be measured In blood andurine. This leads to premature wrinkles, musculoskeletal problems, muscleweakness and dementia. Manyaged people in their 80's are not objectively aged, they are growth hormonedeficient and could be treated, if confirmed by tests. RaySchilling's answer to At what age do most people start to develop wrinkles ontheir face? 5. As we age, we produce lessmelatonin and less growth hormone. All of these hormone levels can be determined. If they are low they should bereplaced with small amounts of whatever hormone is missing (this includesthyroid hormones, sex hormones and DHEA, another energy hormone). This is partof anti-aging medicine. Naturopaths are well versed in this type of approach aswell. Whatever you do,don't take sleeping pills, because it only treats you symptomatically, butmakes your sleeping problem worse. Q9 If you get an opportunity toimmigrate from India to a foreign country, will you feel happy to leave Indiaor feel happy to live in India? A9 Kook Kannan / கூக்கண்ணன்Lives in Vadachennai Fri My uncle's family is settled inAustralia. Some ten years ago, when they visited India I proudly declared to them ‘I willNEVER ever leave India’. My cousins asked me to put it in a writing and signit. I did so promptly. Afew months ago, my uncle in Australia found out that little piece of paper fromsomewhere, put it's picture it in the family whatsapp group and asked me if Ihad changed my mind. I replied, “The reasons have changed but the decision remains the same, perippa.” Inthe last few years, I've started understanding why people are migrating out ofIndia - both for the right and wrong reasons. In the process, I've also startedunderstanding why it's a bad idea for me to move out of India. I'm not as naiveas I used to be but I'm not as worldly as I'm supposed to be either. I'm afraid I will never fit in anywhere else. Not completely. I'll foreverbe the guy from India. Typically, the children of immigrants mix into the newenvironment much more easily than the immigrants themselves. And knowing me,not only I ain't selfless to do something just for the sake of my imaginaryfuture children, I know I'll have a hard time breaking this identity of minethat I've built for myself through the years, in my own mind. Alot of my peers have too high a bench mark. But me? I've seen worse. I know itcan be worse. My parents not only made sure I was never pampered and got to seethe hard realities growing up, but also made me realize how mind boggling isthe upward mobility that my family has experienced in mere three generations. I'm easier to satiate. I'm alreadygrateful to what I've got. Give me a decent paying job and some free time toexplore my hobbies, I'll be fine. Add agirlfriend and I'll be great. I consider everything more a luxury. There's absolutely nothing wrong in goingto better places for better prospectives.Heck, a lot of times it's the only sensible thing to do. Life is all abouttrying to get better and trying to be better. If anyone says otherwise, ignorethem hard. I'm not against emmigration. If that's the only way, I'm ready to goall the way with no regrets. But I'm not going to go out of my way to go thatway. I grew up in North Chennai - the not soposh part of the town subjected to a lot of negative, sometimes not so false, stereotypes. If someone who hadn't been out of Anna Nagar (the posh part of the town)in his whole life comes and looks at my street, I wouldn't be surprised if hecalls it a slum - even if it's not. Iused to hang over that blue plank at the ‘Potti kadai’ two streets awayextending 24 rupees to the Annachi for two packets of blue Aavin milk. Now, theplank comes only upto my knee, a single packet of milk costs 22 rupees and the Annachi has built threestoreys above. Thegarbage vehicle has gone electric and comes everyday to my house playing theradio. A metro station has popped up out of no where and there's a train every5 minutes. The school I studied in has a ‘sky bridge’ now, connecting the oldand new blocks. There's even a mall coming up here. Amall in NORTH Chennai - I would have laughed at the idea just two years ago. I've seen this place around me grow with my owneyes and it has been oddly satisfying. Howeverlucrative moving to a better place for a better life would be, will it be aswholesome as watching your own place getting better? From the inside? Together? And kidding yourself you had some part to play in it? I wonder. I know I'llforever wonder. Q10 Why is cast iron cookware bad? A10 Martin Bayer Chef (1994–present)Mar 16 Cast iron cookware is heavy, which iswhy it is effective. Otherthan the weight, which can make it unwieldy in some situations, there aren’tany downsides to cast iron. There aren’t any in my opinion, anyhow. In some ways cast iron is lessversatile than other types, but that’s more of an opinion than a fact. The only cook ware I use at home are a cast iron skillet, a wok, a nonstick panfor eggs and a sauce pot. The right pots for you depend on your cooking style. All the above QA arefrom Quora website on 28-05- 2022. Quora answersneed not be 100% correct answers .
