Q1            Can I use a match to light my gasstove and cook over it?

A1            Christine Smith Mother(2013–present)3y

It is safer to use the starter but if this stops working, yes you can use a
match. The starter is a just anelectrical spark that lights the gas.

Some safety advice:

Light the matchbefore you turn the gas on so you can light it straight away.
Turning the gason before lighting the match will make a bigger flame when lit
as more gas willpour out, which can burn your hand.

Only turn the gas on its lowest setting when lighting. Then once lit adjust it.
Again giving the higher setting onwill make more gas come out and create a
bigger flame when lighting which cancause you to burn your hand.

The second the gas lights, it will be a short burst offlame before it burns on
the job at the setting youchose. This burst may startle you the first couple of
times. It can be shockingif your not used to it. This burst is normal, Its just
the excess gas burningoff. Be careful not to drop the match.

If you do burn yourhand, run it under the tap. Cool running water over the burn
for a couple ofminutes is the best thing. Afterwards apply a burn gel and a
bandage ifrequired. Do not put a cream not specifically for burns on a burn as
it willmake it worse and cause blisters and pain. If you only turn the gas on
low whenlighting, the flame will be pretty quick so you might just end up with
singedhair. I don’t think I've ever badly burnt myself. That's not to say it
can’thappen.

Never put your facenear the gas. Light it while standing (not crouched at eye
level).

Don’t forget toblow out the match once the gas it lit.

If it doesn't light the first time or the match blowsout:

Turn off the gas and wait a couple minutes for the gas todissipate into the
air. Leaving gas on while gettinganother match will make a bigger flame and may
cause injury.

Propane gas isheavier than air and will hang around even if you turn the stove
off, soallowing a couple minutes let's this reduce. If you have a natural gas
stove, natural gas is lighter than air so it leaves the stove quicker. If unsure
whattype of gas you are using, just allow a couple minutes to pass before
trying tolight again.

This is only atemporary fix. Make sure to get the starter fixed or a new stove
as soon aspossible. Others who want to use the stove might not know it isn't
workingproperly and may cause injury to themselves or the home. Leaving the gas
on cancause death. There is barely a smell. So please make sure you double
check toensure its turned off.

I do not advise lighting a gas oven with a match. Thisinvolves you being inside
a small compartment with a gasthat has the potential to kill you and you have
the ignition source in yourhand. It is more dangerous.

My note- Before the spark lighters were common in India, most used   match
stick. It was ensured awarm match box is used so that it would surely lit the
match stick on rubbing.

One of the LPGstove we bought, auto ignition, had a  cell inside  to create
spark which was neverknown earlier till technician replaced it when auto
ignition did not  function.

Present day stovesuse electric spark byswitching on a switch, and rotating the
knob. There are also gas lighters. Spark lighterswhich rub two pieces of stones
on pushing the rod on top (Chickki mukki)lighter is more safe. Ensure at least
there are two spark lighters in thekitchen.

Q2            How do I find gas leakage near a gasstove?

A2            Venkateswara Swamy Swarna FormerScientist, Metallurgist, Quality
/ NDT Manager at Department of Atomic Energy,India (1967–2008)2y

Most of the time, there will be unpleasant smell(they add foul smelling
chemicals to the gas which is odourless so that peoplecan detect the leakage
from the bad smell).

We can localise theleakage using soap bubble test…Seek professional help if
needed…

Q3            In a gas stove, why doesn’t theflame travel inside the stove
where the gas is and cause an explosion, likewhen you light a gas can on fire?

A3            Jamie Moore Website Designer(2017–present)1y

For an explosion tooccur you'd need a fuel source, oxygen, and heat. If one of
these elements aren't in thereaction then fire will not form. Also gas stoves
are supplied directly bypressurized gas lines so I think the outwardpressure of
the gas overpowers the fires tendency to follow the fuel down into the pipe.

Q4            Why does gas from a gas stove give offa distinct smell?

A4            Matt Riggsby MA Archaeology, BostonUniversity 3y

Because there’s a chemical added to it.Naturalgas is actually odorless by
itself. Utilities typically add mercaptan to it,which gives it that odor. That
bad smell is added to the natural gas specifically so that people willnotice
gas leaks and take action.

Q5            What causes a gas stove to spark?

A5            Gopala KrishnanFormer AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

There are occasionswhen LPG stove stoves spark with a sound and flame goes
high. Spark occurs when any TINY soliditem in the gas. Flames goes high when
gas is about to exhaust/ a wet bottom vessel iskept on the stove. Many women do
not care about wet bottom ofvessels and after keeping on stove it is dangerous
to take it out.

Present day the sparks are rare, thanks to qualityimprovements.

Q6            Whose gene does a male baby inheritmore, his mother’s or his
father’s?

A6            Claire Jordan Degree in biology and folklore;programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper Wed

The mother’s,assuming he has regular XY sex chromosomes. There are moregenes on
the X, which came from his mother, than on the Y which came from hisfather.

In addition, exceptin extremely rare circumstances all babies get
theirmitochondrial genes from the mother. Also, RNA from the mother canbe
caught up in an egg cell (but not RNA from the father in the sperm, becausethe
sperm is too small), carrying across some effects of the mother’s geneseven if
the baby didn’t inherit those actual genes.

My note- In shortchildren born will have more mother’s qualities and few
father’s qualities irrespective ofmale or female child. Earlier there was a
view femalechildren inherit father’s qualities more, and hence attached more to
father. However fathers have more affection to female children.

20% of yourmonthly income into that account

chequebook are a must.

***5. Gold cannothelp  to overcome difficult situation. 99%Jewellery shops
accept gold for exchange only. Those who purchase will giveeven less than 50%
of the investment. Bank loans, one has to clear the pledge in an year.

*** 8. Debt cannotbe avoided. Circumstances makes one in debt.

Q8            Is it true that only a certainamount of glass from recycled
bottles is used to make more glass bottles?

A8            George Dukesh Former Researcher andscientist at Ministry of
Defence of the United Kingdom (2001–2013)Wed

Yes, but that isn’t the entire story.

Glass is actuallyinfinitely recyclable; and re-melting glass and re-using it
uses 1/3 of theenergy that making new glass takes.

However, whenglass is coloured, it retains its colour when it is recycled. Many
places separate recycling glass , and more modern recycling plants do
thisautomatically using an optical scanner.

Also, non-glass (caps, labels, corks) need to be separated.

if you can separate colours ( clear, green, brown ,sometimes blue) then it can
be recycled into bottles or other glass items.

For high qualityoptical glass, you need to make new glass.

Glass that isunsuitable for recycling into bottles or other items is nowadays
crushed andused mixed into road surfacing material, or into buildingmaterials
such as concrete mixes.

Crushed glass has been found to make very hard wearingconcrete, and added to
road surfaces, makes long lasting( and anti-skid) covering. As well as standard
use on roads, it is excellentfor use on specific areas such as tight bends, or
dangerous junctions, where anextra non skid surface is needed.

it can also be treated and shredded for use a glassfibres, for insulation, and
heat sinks.

So nowadays, verylittle glass is wasted, even if it is not used for new bottles.

Q9            Which place in Chennai should betaken as a model for other
localities to improve?

A9            Deepa Shankar Manager, Mannar &Company2y

Without a doubt, it’s got to be KK Nagar. It’s the most well planned
neighbourhood in Chennai. It’s large: a rectangulararea spanning from Ashok
Pillar on one end to Muniswamy Salai on another end.Arcot Road to the Ashok
Pillar Road.

Wherever you are inKK Nagar, you can walk to the nearest bus stop within 7–8
minutes. Tops. Thereare wide roads, parks, minimal dead ends, ration shops,
playgrounds, walkingareas and careful traffic planning. Amma canteens and
TASMAC are also present, for people of all strata and needs.

You are not too farfrom the city centre and you can find buses to take you to
the city centre.Earlier, it had no electric train connectivity but was
supported by a very goodbus terminus and great bus routes. The metro station at
Pillar seems to takecare of the lack of train service now. I am hoping that the
metro route wouldbe extended across the entire length of the Ashok Pillar Road.
What would befantastic, of course, is extending this metro line to the Adyar
River, alongthe Sewage Plant, Nesapakkam, Ramapuram to DLF-Porur-Ramachandra on
one sideand to St Thomas Mount-Airport on the other.

Q10         How remove too much soap and detergentfoam in a front load washing
machine?

A10          Pratik Mukherjee Assitant Teacher ofEnglish from Kolkata, India at
Jadavpur Vidyapith (1999–present) Sat

Use low foam detergents, such as those with the word“matic” behind their names.
If you have already put in thewrong kind of detergent, one or two extra wash
cycles withoutdetergent will get rid of extra soap from your clothes.
