CULTURAL QA 07-2022-03

BEING  ACOMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1            Why should an air conditioner beserviced routinely?

A1            Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

There will be inbuilt of dust in filter as well as insideequipment due to
usage. Filtershave to be cleaned at least once a quarter and internal parts
water servicedonce a year at least. This would provide cool air. However there
canbe leakage of gas gradually, it also has to be attended to. The starting
andrunning capacitors have to be periodically replaced if at all working,
sincethey consume more current on aging.

Unless affected byhigh current etc, compressor may not be come faulty. However
due to aging theperformance of all parts may go down.

Above allirrespective of climate Air conditioner must be put to RUN at least
for onehour in a month.

Q2            Why is airport food so expensive?

A2            Shaunak Bhattacharjeee, SoftwareEngineer | Traveller | Foodie Jun
20

There is not onebut many reasons why airport food is expensive. Firstly,
therestaurants need to pay a good amount of money to the airport authority
forsetting up a restaurant at the airport. Setting up a shop or arestaurant at
prime locations is usually costly, so you can estimate the rentthat these
airport restaurants need to pay. This not just applies torestaurants but other
shops at the airport like the ones selling handicrafts, sarees and sweets.

Secondly, they makeuse of a concept that is widely taught in MBA. Let's say you
are walking insidethe airport and you see a restaurant, you will ask yourself
whether to eat ornot. But if there are 10–15 restaurants in the same place, you
will rather askyourself where to eat. This is a mind game that not just
restaurants atairports play but you will see this at other places too.

Coming to the mostimportant reason — it is the accessibility to food.
Restaurantsinside airports do not target all the passengers coming to the
airport to catchtheir flight; they specifically cater to those passengers who
are spending alayover. These passengers had waited for an hour or two to
catchtheir flight, sat inside the aircraft for another 2–3 hours and will have
towait further to catch their next flight. So they need food and when there
arerestaurants inside the airport, they will prefer shelling out a little
extramoney and eating at the airport instead of going outside to the city and
comingback to the airport.

In April 2022, Iwent to Hubli from Kolkata with my brother and had a 6 hours
layover at theBangalore airport. Ourbill at KFC was for 900 rupees while the
exact same order outside costs us500–600 rupees. The prices were inflated by a
50% margin!

But then I guess itis still cost-effective in a way. The reason is, that
airports in India areusually situated outside of the city premises. So if you
had to book a cab, goto some restaurant, have food and come back, your cab fare
would end up costingmore! Plus, there's a risk of missing your flight too. So
you're not just paying forthe food at the airport but for the ease of access to
it as well since thereisn't an alternate option available.

My note- Still very expensive. About an year back myflight from Chennai to
Bangalore was delayed by 2.5 hrs. The flight time was 11AM. We (self and wife)
had to shell out  for not so good vegetarian meals  more than Rs 1000-00
suddenly. Our idea was to take meals after going to daughter’s home in
Bangalore. (Flighttime 40 minutes, only hand luggage and taxi time 25 minutes
to reach Bg home)

Q3            Are kids nowadays more likely tohave autism than kids in the
past, centuries ago?

A3            Claire Jordan,Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper Jun 27

No. But our modern lifestyle forces kids to stay inschool until 18 and places
much more emphasis on social interaction than in thepast, and provides many
more opportunities for over-stimulation.It’s no longer possibleto leave school
at 12 and then spend your life walking peacefully upand down behind two plough
horses, winning prizes for a perfectly straightfurrow and never having to
confront a noisy film full of car chases and flashinglights.

My note- Kidsborn to intelligent parents, well studied  are found to have been
affected with autism. Autismsubject is still under research

Q4            Can we reduce humidity in a roomwithout using an air conditioner?

A4            Greg Kummer,30+ years factorytrained HVAC technician. 2y

There are 2 way toreduce humidity, reduce the total moisture (grains) in the
room or byincreasing the air’s holding capacity. To increase the holding
capacity heat the room, it willbe able to hold more moisture and therefore have
lower relative humidity. To reduce the grains of moisture, usually blowing air
across a cold surface andthen disposing of it through a condensate drain is how
it is done. Desiccantscould be used but you would need a huge amount and they
would have to bechanged regularly. Ifit is less humid outside than inside then
some sort of ventilation would workwell, like opening a window or a fan
bringing drier air in.

Q5            Why air conditioners are made tosuck out the humidity of air?

A5            Chandrakanth, B.tech from Universityof Calicut (Graduated 2015)4y

I will explainsimply.

Air conditionerspurpose is to condition the air according to your needs. In
case of a split airconditioner, the indoor air is circulated through the indoor
unit where it getsfiltered out of dust, micro particles, odours, some indoor
units kill bacteriawith UV also and finally the dehumidification process.

Inside the indoor unit, the air passers over closelyspaced fins and these fins
are exchanging heat from the air with therefrigerant which is circulated
through the indoor and outdoor unit.

These cooling coilsare kept at a temperature below the Dew point temperature
because in order tocool the room faster, lower coil temperature is needed. (If
you want to heatsomething faster, you need high temperature flame) Since the
coils are below dew point temperature, when the air flows over it the air gets
cooled down to DPT around the coils. When this happens the condensation of water
vapour will start forming on theFINS and coils. This condensed water vapour if
kept there accumulating willoverflow through the ac vents. So a drainage pipe
from the indoor unit is given to the outside of theroom.

Similar waterdrainage can be observed in CAR ac systems. You cansee water
flowing out of the drainage under your car.

So the main duty ofair conditioners are to cool the room while compromising
humidity.

Dewpoint temperature :- The temperature at whichthe first droplet of water
vapour condensation is formed at local atmosphericpressure.

2nd answer- Nagarajan Margasahayam, FormerRetired Space Scientist/Engineer at
Indian Space ResearchOrganisation (ISRO) (1975–1990)2y

Desiccants can make the air dry; however their useis restricted to closed
spaces with provision for circulating the air. Rather expensive.

In living rooms RHcan be reduced by indoor plants (with areal roots) like Ficus
elastica(akarubber plant) that absorb moisture.

Since crowdingincreases the RH, a good cross ventilation will mitigate increase
in RH.

Q6            Why does resistance oppose the flowof a current? Why is it
required to oppose a flow of current, and what is theuse?

A6            Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

Resistance is a quality of materials.Resistance opposing flow of current is a
natural phenomina. Many times resistances areintroduced in a circuit to LIMIT
the current of flow.

Normally the fuse willpermit certain amount of current and required current is
obtained if necessaryby introducing resistance. For example for a fan to run at
required speedresistance is introduced using a regulator.

Q7            Why are Brahmins so cool?

A7            Ramadevi Gidugu, Bachelor ofcommerce from Andhra University
College of Science and TechnologyJun 27

The way they usetheir little resources.

Recently someone I knew suffered speech issues because ofthe age and Parkinson.
Mid 60’s.

Doctors told he hasto undergo some speech therapy, treatment, medication etc.
Advised him to takeSome professional help from a trained person to help him
move his mouth andtongue. So, there will be clarity in his talk. Otherwise day
by day it willbecome difficult for him to speak properly. He is losing clarity
of speech.

They arevery poor, can't afford all this treatment. Theylive in a small
village. He definitely can't afford all this. He resigned tohis fate. It's not
a life threatening disease but gradually his quality of lifewill be affected.

Few days he triedfor seeking help. Who will do life long help?

He bought some sanskrit stotras book. Started reading loud.He is a retired
English teacher in a small primaryschool. He has a small music player. His son
recorded those sanskrit stotrasand gave it in a pen drive. He practices along
with it. Taking only medicines.

That sanskrit words loud pronounciation, reading news paperloud, helping him
improve his speech. Though remainingbody condition is not improving that much,
atleast not deteriorated.

Forget about theirmeaning, whether God really accepts these stotras, prayers or
not, puja,punyam, all these issues.

Just a simple thing helped him without any furtherexpenditure on his head.

His doctorappreciated and started recommending this simple thing to his
patients who hassimilar issues but can't afford these therapists, I heard.

When I said this tomy doctor friend in Bangalore, he said, ‘not bad. He chose
his own speech therapy. It does help buthe should take medicines also.

Brahmins are neverrulers. except a very few. They never inherit huge money from
ancestors. Neverhad huge chunk of land.

Minority community. Criticised by all. Never get anybenefits equal to other
communities in govt policies or schemes. Always have toput two hundred percent
to survive.

Still, somehow theyare surviving just by their hard work and education.

Thecoolest part is they believe in Karma, God for failure or
successwholeheartedly. Few exceptions may be there.

Most mocked andheckled community for their orthodox style of living. Still,
they never losetheir calm and composure. Great believers in God and karma.

Q8            Could anesthesia be utilized as aneurological tool to offer ways
to enhance the brain and deliver help toprevent dementia, Alzheimer’s, and
other debilitating brain diseases?

A8            Ken Saladin,Former professor ofhistology (microscopic anatomy)Tue

Anesthesia is arguably the most dangerous part of almostany surgery. The
anesthesiologist isn’t thesurgeon’s assistant—she/he is the doctor who’s
keeping you alive, monitoringseveral variables constantly, vigilant for signs
of trouble and ready to act quickly and decisively.

You don’t screwaround with human anesthesia. Nor can I see any way it would do
what youpropose.

Q9            Since not every railways in Londonare connected, how do they move
train from factory to railways or railways torailways in case of transfer? Do
they have a special truck for the job?

A9            Keith Jackson,35 years as a traindriver uk railways4h

But there ARE connections on all lines , not only inLondon, but all of the UK.
Even London Underground haveconnections to the Mainline railway. Freight
traffic interconnects lines acrossLondon. New trains areeither hauled from
Factory or Docks( if delivered from abroad) by Diesellocomotives as the new
units may still not have been fully commissioned, however, sometimes they may
run under their own power from works to depots. Onodd occasions, if a single
new vehicle or a defective coach or loco is beingmoved to works, then
specialists road haulage companies like Alleys Transport ,will move them .

Q10         What is the second most pleasurablebodily sensation?

A10          David Moore,Evolutionary Logotherapist,Jun 4

Probably orgasming.Possibly pooping.

If you thought that ‘sex’ was the most pleasurable bodilysensation, then you’ve
probably never known severe thirst.

There’s a reasonwhy so much religious literature (especially from the dry
Middle East) makesreference to water and ourneed for it. Intercourse is a
trivial bonus compared to consumptionof the stuff the human organism depends on
most.
