BEING  ACOMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1         What causes a washing machine to notturn on?

A1          Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

I hope the questionis after switching on the power supply, washing machine is
not turning ON. Inthe case of semi- automatic washing machine one has to rotate
WASHING SWITCH.In the case of automatic washing machine there can be a loose
connection inside.Technician has to be called for.

Also in automaticwashing machines though the electronic switches operate,
machine will not runtill water is filled. If there is a disruption in water
supply, it will beindicated as water filling… you may not hear the sound of
washing.

Q2         How far should a septic tank pipe hangover the tank?

A2          Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)0y

I am from Chennai, India.Earlier the exhaust was erected in a corner of septic
tank. Normally septictanks are constructed in front to one side of home, so
that Lorries can collectthe waste when tank is full , keeping lorry in road,
using flexible pipe tosuck the contents of septic tank using a motor.

Nowadays, the exhaust is erected in the middle of septic tank line and
perforated coveris provided. Onehas to SEARCH sometimes to see where the
exhaust is provided. This is erectedto a height of above 15 feet, by PVC non
flexible pipe.

As far as flats arecombined, there could be more septic tanks, Lorry could go
inside and exhaustsmust be somewhere in the open area/close to walls. Heightof
the PVC non-flexible pipe may be above 25–30 feet.

Q3         Which is the oldest Hindu temple whichstill exists?

A3          Navdeep Desur, Research andDevelopment (2004–present)Jun 7

The Lord Varadharaja Perumal temple is the oldest Hindutemple that still
exists. It is located in Kanchipuramand was built in the 8th century by King
Narasimhavarman II.

It was originallybuilt out of wood, but was later rebuilt with stone by
Rajendra Chola in the11th century. The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt
many times since thendue to fires, earthquakes and other natural disasters.

The main deity inthis temple is Lord Vishnu, one of the three main gods in
Hinduism along withBrahma and Shiva. However, there are also idols of Brahma,
Shiva and Devi (Goddess) within this templecomplex as well.

Q4         What inventions were not accepted atfirst?

A4          Ernest W. Adams, School taught me tohate history, but now I love
it. Fri

Early automobileswere slow and unreliable, and the noise they made tended to
scare horses. Whensomeone was broken down at the side of the road, passers-by
used to make fun of them by shouting,“Get a horse!” It was also hard to find
parts and fuel for them. For one year, England required anyone driving a car to
bepreceded on foot (!) by a man waving a red flag to warn other users of
theroad.

They were literally“horseless carriages,” open-topped vehicles with wagon
wheels and steered witha tiller. It took a while for them to catch on.

Q5         What are powerline poles made of?

A5          Steven Haddock, Studied at YorkUniversity (Canada)Sat

Whatever is handy. Wood was the originalmaterial because it was plentiful,
strong and non-conductive. It’s also lightand easy to work with.

Another popularchoice - concrete.Very strong, also non-conductive, but a lot
heavier and harder to work with.

But for high powerlines, structural steel.Although steel conducts electricity,
it’s strong enough to hold multiple veryheavy lines with little or no
maintenance during their lifetimes.

My note- Stainless steel pipes with about 4 inchesdiameter is also used in
certain parts in India.Wecan see them in the middle of highways.

Q6         Why doesn't sea water spread to thesides, if the Earth rotates at
kilometers per hour?

A6          Info Orb. Dale P Lee, Jun 22

The Earth rotatesat about 1654 km/h. That seems very fast to us. However that
speed is the speed of the Earth's surfaceat the Equator, it is a tangential
speed. Keep in mind that 1654 kmis nothing compared to the diameter of the
Earth.

What you want isthis:

To achieve that, the important thing is not the speed tangential to the surface
of the ball butthe angular speed . Thattennis ball is probably spinning at
least 10 revolutions per second , enough toproduce a (centrifugal) force that
pushes the water out.

Nowimagine that same tennis ball spinning at one revolution per second. At
thatangular speed the centrifugal force is so small that the water would not
shootout as in the image.

If one revolutionper second seems slow to you, how about one revolution every
10 seconds? Or onerevolution per minute? Or better yet, one revolution per hour?

One revolution perhour is the angular velocity of the minute hand of a clock.
One revolutionevery 12 hours is the angular speed of the hour hand.

And what is the angular velocity of the Earth? Onerevolution every 24 hours. In
other words, the Earth rotates at half the speedof the hour hand of the clock!

The centrifugalforce generated by the rotation of the Earth is minuscule at the
Equator (atthe poles it is zero) and is counteracted by a much stronger force:
the forceof gravity. The water is not going anywhere, just aswe are not going
to float out.

Q7         What is the purpose or benefit of usingoval pipes versus round pipes
in underground drain systems?

A7          Darren Woodward,Avid amateur historianwith too many books2y

Sewers and drainsuse water flow to keep “things” moving downstream to the
treatment works.Typically this water is a mix of both surface runoff (rain
water) and greywater from various premises.

Sewer pipes are often shaped like an inverted tear drop, narrow at the bottom
and getting wider at the top. When rainfall is high, the pipes fill with water
and everything is sweptdownstream. In drier periods, the water level falls and
only the lower narrowsection of pipe remains full of water. The shape of the
sewer pipe maintains anarrow but deeper stream of water, deep enough to keep
things moving.

If the pipe was round, in periods of low flow, the waterwould spread out and
you would get a very shallowstream trickling down the bottom of the pipe. The
same volume of water wouldnot be deep enough to keep things afloat and moving.

2ND ANSWER- Christopher Pattison,FormerEngineering Underwriter2y

I presume you arereferring to sewer pipes, large enough to walk through, rather
than those usedin the domestic environment.

Oval pipes have anumber of benefits, such as:

The trench to putthem into is narrower, so using up less space to excavate.

The arch isnarrower, so being stronger to carry traffic loads overhead after
construction.

With a narrow base, the flow through the pipe during lowflow levels, will be
stronger, so helping to preventsedimentation and clogging up of the pipe.

Q8         What did people use before plastic?

A8          Chris Coleman Worked at Chemistry Sat

One of the earliestplastics was Bakelite, which was synthesized from phenol and
formaldehyde. Those two substances werederived from coal tar andwood alcohol.
Bakelite is a thermo-setting plastic, which has excellentinsulating and heat
resistant qualities, but canbecome brittle, and was often mixed with other
substances likeasbestos fibers, to give it better strength. It was patented in
1909.

 (A Bakelite knob)

Prior to Bakelite, rubber was often used to moldflexible, insulating things
with, such as wireinsulation, raincoats, rubber boots and other useful things.
Charles Goodyear developed theprocess for vulcanized rubber, which meant the
rubber item wouldn’t become softor melt when it became hot. In chemistry we
call thiscross-linking.(A rubber hair comb from India)

For hard items, natural materials were used, such asivory, whale bone, tortoise
shell or amber. Celluloidand Collodion was first developed in 1848 by combining
cellulose, which is thematerial making up plant cell walls and camphor, which
is a type of turpentine.Nitrocellulose was highly flammable and used for flash
paper and gun cotton, but could be combined with camphor to form a transparent
or translucent andmoldable plastic.

My note- The earliest telephones very common till about1975 were having
bakelite body. Now the body iscombination of bakelite with plastic/PVC.

Q9         Why do strawberries have their seeds onthe outside instead of inside
like other fruits?

A9          Lois L. Kersey Updated 9h

Theydon't have them.

When you've lookedat a fat, ripe strawberry, you've probably noticed that the
outside is coveredin little holes, and each hole contains a tiny strawberry
seed, right?

Nope.

What you are looking at are hundreds of individual littlefruits, each with its
own seed. They are a type of"achene" (a fruit containing a single seed). They
are a dried fruitand should be considered the true fruit of the strawberry
plant.

Insideeach fruit, which does not open at maturity, is a small seed. The
delicious fleshy part of the plant that we commonly call strawberry is
justaccessory tissue, which makes the plant more attractive to hungry birds
andother animals, who consume the achenes and subsequently shit the seeded
fruitelsewhere, where we hope that some of them germinate and grow into a
newstrawberry plant. (Mostnew strawberry plants come from existing strawberry
plants, which send upslender growths called "runners." When the runners
reachthe ground, they send roots into the ground. The original runner dies, and
thenew roots produce new strawberry plants. ).

Q10              How come strawberries taste sweetwith only 5% sugar content?

A10        July 03, 2022

Strawberries are low sugar fruits. A medium-sizedstrawberry weighs about 12
grams and contains about 0.6 grams of sugar.

Unripe strawberriescontain acids such as aspartic acid, citric acid, malic
acid, and salicylicacid, and are very low in sugar, about 3 percent.

As the strawberries ripen, the acid content of thestrawberries decreases
significantly and the sugar content increases from 3% to5%.

In addition, ripestrawberries contain more than 30 volatile compounds, which
not only givestrawberries a special aroma, but also increase the perceived
sweetness.

So, despite not being high in sugar, ripe strawberries dotaste sweet.

Strawberries arelow-calorie fruits. The average medium strawberry contains only
4 calories, which is very suitable for people losing weight.
