Q1 Why are apples healthier than otherfruits? A1 Lucia Garcia Worked at HospitalsSat In the "World's Healthiest Fruits" list, applescome first. Apple is a"full range of healthy fruit", rich in organic acids, vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, polyphenols, and flavonoids and other nutrients. According to USDA nutrient estimates, apples are the mostnutrient dense of all fruits. Although the saying"an apple a day keeps the doctor away" may not be very accurate, eating apples daily does prevent and avoid many chronicdiseases. Apples are thefruit with the most flavonoids, which are powerful bioactive compounds. Thehuman body cannot synthesize flavonoids. Flavonoids have awide range of biological and pharmacological activities, and haveanti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidative, antiaging and othereffects. There is increasing evidence for the role of flavonoidsin preventing major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular and cerebrovasculardiseases, cancer, diabetes and so on. The flavonoids inapples are mainly concentrated near the peel, so eatapples without peeling them. Generally, the darker the apple, the higher its flavonoidcontent. Some nutritionistsbelieve that apples are "good medicine" to help increase lifeexpectancy, and eating an apple a day can extend the average lifespan by 3 to 5years. Q2 Is it some real magic or other reasonsbehind the saving of Kedarnath Temple? A2 Shaunak Bhattacharjeee SoftwareEngineer | Traveller | Foodie Mon Being someone froma science background, I will try to answer this as sceptically as possible but there are some things thatscience cannot explain. I was watching a documentary on television afew years ago about the Kedarnath floods of June 2013. The tragic incident tookaway the lives of more than 6,000 people and close to 5,000 villages weredestroyed. Anything that came in the way of the flooded waters perished. Yet,the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, the main destination for which millions ofpilgrims visit the holy site which lies directly on the water's path remainedunscathed. A sudden rapidmelting of ice and snow on the Kedarnath mountain increased the water level ofthe Chorabari river. As water gushed down the valley, reducing everything onits to ruble and pulling it on its course, from nowhere, a rockcame tumbling down from nowhere and got stuck right behind the Kedarnathtemple. Thatrock bore the brunt of the flood and diverted it around the temple's structure, causing no damage to the temple. The worst affectedarea was the Kedarnath Valley where this 8th-century old temple was and yet, nothing happened to the temple. Yet, nobody knows where the rockcame from. Therock precisely stood there at the backside of the temple, had it rolled downfrom the mountains, it could have tumbled and hit the temple and destroyed itmuch before the flood waters could. Had it not been at that place, the floodwater would have anyway destroyed the structure. It was thereat the right place and the right time and unless you consider it a hugecoincidence, there is nothing else that could possibly describe this. Today, the rock is worshipped along with the temple. It has been named as the Bhim Shila and people consider the rock holy and tohave magical powers since it protected the temple from a devastating flood. Q3 If a bride is from Kerala and groomfrom Tamil Nadu. Which thaali should the bride wear? A3 Bhuvana Rameshwar, married for threedecades Mon The Tamilian thaali as the groom’s side customs are to befollowed according to Tamil culture. It is a singlegold thaali tied by the groom with the help of his sister or mother. In somecastes the groom's sister buys the thaali (mangalsutra) out of live for herbrother. Nowadays the mil buys it. There are differentdesigns of the thaali depending on family culture. The size too varies. Q4 Which sink material does not getscratch? A4 Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)0y In my experience stainless steel is better than ceramic.Good quality stainless steel used for making cooking vessels is best. Therewill not be scratches if quality cleaning brushes are used. Ceramics may fade, break, or many rimes stains may not disappear. I have used ceramic for 13 yearsand stainless steel for the last 16 years. One thing to ensure- Outside of sinkare also to be cleaned at least once a week/fortnight. Q5 Which PVC pipe sizes should be used inhouse plumbing to maintain good flow and pressure where over head water tank isat 16 ft from floor level? A5 Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)0y I have read other answers before my answering.Height of 16 feet above floor level is not sufficient to maintain good flow andpressure; I have installed my overhead tank above first floor at about 12 feetheight from 1st floor. I get good flow of water ONLY IN TAPSAT TWO FEET ABOVE floor level in the first floor. In ground floor I get water with goodflow. Reducing thediameter of the pipe is a way to get good flow and better pressure. But wecannot reduce more. Normally 3/4″ diameter pvc pipes and taps are used forwater distribution. Astold in another answer, PVC water pipes are affected by sunlight sincethey are fitted on outside walls. Periodical replacement is required. I have observed painting on pipes while repainting homegives the pipes more strength. 2nd answer- Nandkishore Purohit, BE(HONS) inCivilEngineering, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (Graduated1978)5y Normally, 15 mm ODpipes are sufficient for most uses as downtake pipes. However, if the intent isto use a shower panel, this head may not be sufficient. If the outlet faucetsare several in number and there is a possibility of their concurrent use, gofor a higher size for the main pipe 25/ 32 mm and the rest outlet connectionsfor 15 mm. Do consider thatuPVC pipes degrade on exposure to direct sunlight (UV radiation. 3rd answer- Janardhan, Former Self Employed5y You can use 1inchpipe throughout the supply line you will have sufficient pressure and good flowof water if sufficient water is stored in the tank. 4th answer-Raju Panto,Former ExecutiveEngineer5y Use 25mm dia and15mm dia PVC pipes. These two sizes fits well for domestic purposes. Still better would be to consultan expert plumber who is deals in this nature of work. Q6 What is the difference between splitair conditioner, central air conditioning and window air conditioner? Each andevery answer was too long to be good. So posting a short answer. A6 Ketan Deshpande,Former Senior Engineerat Blue Star Limited Updated 1y Every AC has 4 main components: Compressor (makesnoise while working) Condenser Expansion valve(air losses the heat here / air becomes cool here) Evaporator (outputof cold air) All the ACs that you mentioned are categorised by theplacement of the above four units in the AC. 1Window AC: the simplest and cheapest of all All the fouressential components are inside one box. Thus it is cheaper, but as thecompressor is now closer to your room, you will hear a lot of noise. (It happens withsome of our refrigerator’s compressor as well, we hear some noise while thecompressor is working) 2. Split AC: little more complex-advanced and costly. Now to reducenoise, they decided to shift compressor somewhere away from the people who arein the room (Imagine a 5-star hotel, where comfort is everything and the clientwants to sleep in a perfectly silent room - so the invention) With compressorthey also shifted condenser outside, the only evaporator is required near the room, but for somesimplicity reason, the expansion valve is also in the indoor unit. 3. Central AC: Compressor condenser outside, faraway from the room to be cooled. Imagine there'sjust one BIG outdoor unit (like in split AC but of much larger capacity) withmultiple ducts (outlet openings) which are connected to multiple indoor units. These indoor units can be of different types. I'll post a few pics of differentindoor units which you see in offices and CCDs or multiplexes. Thank you. I mighthave skipped a few details to keep it easy and short. Upvote if you liked theanswer. My note- The cool air is distributed to different flats,if it is in a flat through DUCT andopening in each room as required. The same is with offices. Normally there willbe two systems, at least one of them canbe put to supply cool air. Theseairconditioners also work on diesel generator. In large Telecomexchanges centralised AC is used. Q7 Are there any special varieties of ricegrown in Tamil Nadu? A7 Anbazhagan Ambrose,M.Phil. inLiterature & Linguistics, Jawaharlal Nehru University (Graduated 2000)Mon Two that I have used Mapillai samba - type of red rice You cannot replacewhite rice with this, I found it be OK for tiffin kind of items, but utterlyboring as rice replacement. My note- It iscalled kara rice/iddalirice. Thooyamalli rice - looks likeregular parboiled rice, made dishes like lemon rice with it. Perfectly fine aswhite rice replacement We have other ricevarieties like seeragesamba, black rice etc. But then they are also grown outside Tamilnaduand not really unique to TN. My note- Arcot kichili, Erode Venpuzhungaal arealso famous. Q8 What happens if you eat too much onion? A8 Dale P Lee.Jun 24 Onion is the mostplanted vegetable in the world, and its nutritional value is very high, knownas the "Queen ofVegetables". Onions not onlycontain the nutrients that the body needs, but also have many medicinalproperties, such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, etc. It is worthmentioning that onions contain some fructans, which most vegetables do not. Fructan is acarbohydrate with health care functions, which can reduce the production oftumor-related substances and has a good effect on the prevention of cancer andother chronic diseases. Fructan is also anutrient for the good bacteria in the gut, which can increase the number ofgood bacteria. However, there may be some side effects after eating toomuch onion. There are noenzymes in the intestine that can break down fructans, so the body cannotdigest or absorb them. Largeamounts of fructans accumulate in the intestine and can cause intestinalproblems such as bloating, abdominal pain, gas, and cramps. Therefore, you cannot eat too many onions, and it is recommended to eat 50 grams to 80 grams a day. Q9 Is a military doctor considered a moreknowledgeable in the medical science than a doctor? Not trying to offend anyonehere, I am just curious if military doctors have a wider range of expertisethan of that of civilian doctors A9 Ramanan Duraiswami.Former Paratrooper,Pathologist, Patriot at Army Medical Corps (1977–2013)May 25 I am a graduate of the Armed Forces Medical College. OurMBBS syllabus is the same as for all other Medical Colleges in India.Just like all other doctors, some of us are good, and some areoutstanding. The professional training at the undergraduate level is thesame. Additionally, after Commissioning, we aretrained in military skills. Again, at the PG level, the course structure is thesame. Some Air ForceMedical Officers are trained in Aviation Medicine, while Naval officers are trained in Marine Medicine. In thecourse of our duties in military Hospitals and non Medical units, we comeacross certain injuries which our civilian counterparts may not ordinarilyencounter, such as bulletinjuries, grenade and mine blast injuries and injuries from artillery firing.I have seen soldiers and Officers who have sustained such injuries;unfortunately, most were fatal injuries. We also undertake a good amount of administrative dutieseven as Specialists, which adds an extra dimension to our skills sets. Q10 Does Canada have high-speed rail? A10 Steven Haddock,3rd generation (or so)Canadian & lifelong resident; political science major Jun 12 Not by the standarddefinition, no. In fact, train speed has moved backwards over the last 50 years. This is the CN UACTurboTrain, which was an American made train that was used in Canada from 1968to 1982. It is the fastest regular passenger train ever used in the country. Itused gas turbine engines which could push it along at speeds of up to 274 km/h,and was regularly run at 193 km/h. Alas, the traindidn’t last as it turned out to be expensive to operate and unreliable. As such, Canada’sworkhorse passenger train is the LRC The LRC uses dieselfuel to run electrical generators. It tops out at 153 km/h, and regularlyexceeds 110 km/h. The LRCs are due tobe replaced by trains manufactured by Siemens, which are currently being tested. The Siemens trainsare supposed to operate at 230 km/h - faster than the LRC, but still slowerthan the Turbo Train. All the above QA are from Quora website on 06-07- 2022.
