BEING  A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1         Why don't loco pilots turn off theengine of a diesel train?

A1         Swagata Sarkar ,Technology and RailwayEnthusiast Thu

The diesellocomotives are left operational even when not working for a number
of reasons, let me put them forward one by one

Loss of brake pressure:

Trains use an air braking system.Turning the locomotive off will cause the
compressors in the locomotive to stopproducing pressure in Brake pipes and loss
of brake pressure will mean a dangerof the train rolling off.

Even in case, the train doesn't roll off, the locopilots need to build thebrake
pressure up again before starting the journey else they cannot stop thetrain.
And building up brake pressure in a 50+ coach freighttrain takes a lot of time.

Nowadays the Shorthood of ALCo locomotives (WDM 3 and WDG 3 class) has an APU
(Auxiliary powerunit). In events of longstops, the locopilots turn the diesel
engine off and start the APU instead topower the compressor of the locomotive
as well as other necessary auxiliaries.

Wastage of fuel in re-start:

Diesel locomotives on average burn less fuel whileidling than restarting them
within a certain period of time.

Diesel engines usedin locomotives require a lot of fuel during startup combined
with a lot of fuelto prime them before starting up. Given the above reasons,
it's more economicalto let the engine idle than start and stop it multiple
times.

Not having a fixed duty schedule:

Unlike us,locomotives don't really have a fixed working schedule. The need for
dispatchcan arrive any moment without further notice. So sometimes locomotives
are keptpowered on in case of such unseen time.

Some locomotives, like Shunters, the majority of whom arediesel-powered, need
to stay powered all the timebecause shunting duty can arrive at any moment.

Hope the abovepoints were useful. comments are welcome as always

Q2         What shocked you today as an Indian?

A2         Gurmeet Bishnoi, Lives in India(1996–present)Wed

I was going on thebike.

There was a railwaycrossing on the way. The barriers were down because train
was about to approachin few minutes. I stopped bike and started waiting
patiently.

A bike stoppedbeside me and he started honking. He was looking in hurry,

Me: Uncle, relax.Train will arrive in 4–5 minutes.

He: I can goearlier. There is some space here. Help me a bit.

He started tryingto pass bike under the barriers. I thought he is in some
hurry, I help him. He managed to took bike and crossthe railway line. He went.

Train arrived after2–3 minutes and gates were opened. I started my bike.

After 2–3 kilometers, I noticed the sameuncle on roadside. He was playing cards
with someone. It sounds funny as well as serious. He did all hard work, took
risk just toplay cards. He could come 2 minutes later.

Anywhere intraffic, crossings we notice that people forget discipline and cars
get stuck.Due to lack of patience it always creates chaos. Although, 90% people
have no hurry, they caneasily wait for couple of minutes but they avoid doing
this.

law was a lawyer, but his duty was looking after  the home and associated
works. Oneday I could see him in uniform.I just smiled. He said- Brother in
laws are away. An urgent bail has to betaken. So I am going.

Q4         What does a buffalo produce?

A4         Wayne Boyd, Philosopher, publishedauthor & pseudoscience skeptic.
Updated Tue

A buffalo producesbaby buffaloes and milk, which is more oily than cows milk,
but drinkable. Buffalo milk sitsa little heavy in the stomach, so it’s best to
mix it with cow milk. I’ve had it many times whenI was younger and gallivanting
around the world. Buffalo are often used as work animals to pull cartsand farm
fields in India. What a buffalo does not produce are otherbuffaloes in the
fields of North America, since those are bison and mistakenlycalled buffaloes.

This is a North American bison. We commonly call thembuffaloes, but they are
not buffaloes. They are bison. Infact, most bison today are not pure blooded,
but mixed with cows. The AmericanBeefalo Association says beefalo with 37.5%
bison genes are consideredfull-blood beefalo.

Q5         Should I sit right below my ceiling fanor a little aside to get its
air?

A5         Bhanu Mitra Engineer / Manager(2002–present)1y

Right below the ceiling fan is an area ofno air. You have to sit atleast 24
inches from the direct middle of the ceiling fan to experience bestair movement.

While many peoplebelieve that ceiling fans add cool air to a space, this isn’t
exactly true. Ceiling fans merely increase theairflow in a room. Airflow is
exactly what it sounds like, a currentof air that moves through a space.
Ceiling fans increase the airflow of an areaby pulling up air from the ground
and pushing down air from the ceiling. Thiscreates a consistent breeze.

Q6         Why do people still happen to live along life despite never
exercising?

A6         Dan Rosenberg A 5K race runner for over30 years; won my last two
5Ks.Updated Thu

My grandfather lived to 91 and never formally exercised inhis life. Never went
to a gym, ran a mile, liftedweights, any of that. He also ate a diet heavy in
salty, smoked foods andprocessed meats (he was born in 1905 in Europe, came to
the U.S. in around 1920,and continued to eat the Eastern European foods he’d
grown up with).

Genetics may have helped him,but I get the feeling it was all the walking he
did. The man only owned a carvery briefly in the 1950s, and lived in the heart
of Manhattan from the 1920sto the 1990s. He walked and took the subway
everywhere. Even in his 80s, he’dwalk 20 blocks to a museum.

Speaking of which, he always kept his mind engaged, aswell. Whenhe earned a
master’s in literature from NYU at age 85, he was written upin the newspaper as
the oldest person ever to earn a master’s degree from thatuniversity

Q7         What happens if you don’t haverefrigerant in your air conditioner?

A7         Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)0y

What I haveexperienced is compressor will be switched ON and instead of cool
air hot airwill come from the AC unit. This can be due to leakage of
refrigerant. If the refrigerant is running forlong period (Many years)
sometimes the cool air may have something more, whichmakes the cool air is not
comfortable.

To avoid harm tocompressor it is best to fill refrigerant FULLY. Refrigerant is
costly inIndia. About Rs 3000–00 for filling  in a1.5 ton AC.

Q8         Did the ancient Romans have locks ontheir doors?

A8         Ernest W. Adams School taught me tohate history, but now I love it.
Jul 14

They could bar the door from the insidewith an actual wooden bar that prevented
it from swinging inwards. They usedthis at night while everyone was asleep. If
they went out during the day, it was unusual for thereto be no one at home at
all. If they were poor, the wife would stayhome; if they were better off, the
slaves would be at home. The very rich had apermanent door keeper, the janitor.
He was named for the god Janus, wholooks both directions at once.

Q9         Did Ramayan and Mahabharat actuallyhappened or is it just a moral
story?

A9         Sayan Mukherjee Proud Indian1y

Let me tell you astory.

Let at some pointin the future, somehow mankind ended, like shown in the
movies. But only a fewhundred people survived on an island. They didn't had any
food or moderntechnology to survive. So they started living like early man.

In order to retainthe information of human civilization, they passed on the
knowledge of humanhistory like astronomy, mathematics, moral values, medicinal
knowledge andhistory including world war 1 and world war 2. All of them were
translatedorally, in English.

After 500 years, their population multiplied. The civilization also discovered
writingtechnique. So they wrote down whatever they remembered or retained, as
told bytheir ancestors about the human knowledge, in manuscripts, in English.

Over the next 1000years, the thing that was supposed to be history, science and
philosophy tookthe form of a religion. Those who believed in the history and
science werecalled to be the followers of that specific religion.

As the yearspassed, variations in language came and most of the people forgot
the Englishlanguage.

Finally, in theyear 4000 A.D., the then human civilization attained 20th
Century liketechnology.

Soon the questionof the manuscripts and religion were brought to discuss among
the scientists, whether they were true or not.

One scientist said,"Lol, how could such an ancient civilization exist 2000
years ago.”Another one claimed, "You mean there were flying machines which
droppedatomic bombs in world war 2? How could it be possible? We invented
aeroplanesand atomic bombs recently, how can they exists before 2000 years ago."

Did Ramayan andMahabharat actually happen or is it just a moral story?

In the above story replace English with Sanskrit andworld war 1 and world war 2
with Ramayana andMahabharata, and you will get the Answer.

Q10              How is it possible that homemadebread makes my blood sugar
rise too much? I make it without any sugar.

A10       Joshua Engel He/him Jul 5

Because the difference between white flour and sugar, nutritionally speaking, is
negligible. White flour is acomplex carbohydrate, which turns into simple
carbohydrate (that is, sugar)very easily. Your mouth is full of enzymes that
convert some of it even beforeyou’ve swallowed it. Your homemade bread is not
all that much better thanstore-bought — though it can be a bit better if you’re
using whole wheat ratherthan white flour.

If you’remonitoring your blood sugar because you’re diabetic, you need to
consult with adietician, or at least your general practitioner. This is
something that theyshould have already told you. In fact, I’m pretty certain
they did, and youneed to go back and get a refresher. This is really important
stuff.

The very shortversion is that you need to look at all “net carbohydrates”, not
just sugar. This is slightly different from fiber, which is also a carbohydrate
but noteasily digested. Fiber good, carbs bad, sugar a tiny bit worse.

This is far, fartoo simplistic. You absolutely need to talk to your doctor, and
get theirinstructions, because it is literally your life at stake here.
