Q1 Why is the rabbit not considered arodent? Claire Jordan,Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Jul 13 Different teeth - lagomorphs havetwo pairs of upper incisors instead of one pair. And they have a weird two-step digestive system- their food goes through once, is passed out as soft pellets, is then eaten, processed again and passed out as hard pellets. It makes their digestion veryefficient. Lagomorphs arealmost entirely herbivorous - they can afford to be because they canextract nutrients from grass so effectively - whereas most rodents are omnivores. A4 Abraham Sukumar, In medical service inIndia for more than three decades Sat Doctors are oftenaccused of profiteering on the suffering of patients. It is time their side ofthe story is narrated. I consider myself well positioned to do so. For the thirty-four years I served in the government medicalservice of Tamilnadu State of India I was never offered a living wage. I once had a seniorcolleague who was a radiologist. One day he was full of complaints of a patientwho had spent a good sum of money on a large portrait photograph of himself bya well-known and expensive firm of photographers but was unhappy to pay a tenthof that for a chest x-ray. I tried to explain the psychology behind thatattitude to my colleague. Theportrait was his choice but the x-ray even if lifesaving was forced on him. Decades later I hada taste of the same medicine. It was a case of ventral abdominal hernia in anobese middle-aged woman. It took a few weeks to prepare her for surgery and thesurgery itself was complicated. It was successful. The fee that included thepreoperative investigations, nursing home fee for theatre facilities, and theinpatient care was modest, but the patient made no secret that he thought the fee extravagant. Later I came toknow the reason for his dissatisfaction. He wasextending his living room and the hospital expense on top of that annoyed him.Apparently, the room extension was his priority project not his wife’s ventralhernia. The autoclave attendant who provided perfect asepsis for the case wasvalued below the brick layer. Operation charges are worth an analysis.A couple of years ago I had a cyst in the lower part of the chest that had tobe removed. A senior plastic surgeon once my undergraduate student and who haddone his rotating surgical internship in my unit offered to do the removal.Another former student now a retired surgeon offered to assist the surgeon. Thenursing home itself was owned by a former special trainee of mine. In short it was all free for me. Iinsisted on paying for the expendables, drugs, dressings, and other materialused in the case. At the end of the operation the nurse gave thelist to my wife. I found later that it was quite a tidy sum. Catgut costs a lotas does the sterile dressing material. Venflon, the needle that is fixed to thevein during the operation that can be used for only one case is quiteexpensive. Operation theatreis expensive to maintain. Two nurses and her helpers not to mention theequipment used in sterilising linen and instruments. Theatre charges is a bigshare of the total operating expenses. Investigations cost a lot too especiallyMRIs and CT scans both need expensive equipment costing in crores forinstallation. Finally comes the surgeon’s fee, the only flexible item in thislong list. Thepatient knows nothing of these. He has paid a bigamount and he assumes the surgeon was the beneficiary whereas the surgeon only shares, and hisshare is not the lion’s share either. It is closer to the jackal’s share! The above storiesare from India. In the US patients are regularly bankrupted by hospital bills. If one assumes that the money has been pocketed by the doctors one would bemistaken. I do not envy the American doctor. He has handed over control ofhealth care to the insurance company, the pharmacy industry, and thenon-medical hospital CEOs who demand and receive yearly bonuses in millions. USdoctors do well, no doubt, but it is nowhere close to what the others mentionedreceive. There are exceptions but nevertheless I do feel that byand large doctoring is a noble profession. Q5 Why is Greece considered the center ofWestern civilization? A5 Ernest W. Adams, School taught me tohate history, but now I love it. Jul 17 Not the center, the origin.Greece is the place in Europe where the early philosophers, mathematicians, andengineers worked. While the people in what is now France and Britain wereilliterate tribes living in huts, the Greeks were writing books on political science and medicine. The Romans borrowed from them and spread their ideas all over Europe. The Arabspreserved their work during the early Middle Ages after the Western RomanEmpire came apart, and then Catholic scholars recovered it from the Arabs.Plato's Republic is still required reading for political scientists. A8 Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)0y Refrigerator maynot perform for the following reasons. Easy check of whether electric supply is in order. While you open the refrigerator check whether the lamp inside lights. If notlighting problem can be with power supply or stabilizer output. If the lamp islighting, power supply is there, cooling is not there. It can be due to regulator switch inside is pushed to Zero position.Increase the switch position. If some cooling is there, check for the coverings of the vent holes by items kept in therefrigerator. Take a few items and ensure vent holes are not covered. Check forcooling. Lamp is lighting and vent holes are ensured not covered, the problem is with compressor. Call companytechnician. They will check the compressor for proper working ensuring there isno loose connection, compressor functioning etc using their meters. If compressor has to be REPLACED CHECK FOR WARRANTY.If the compressor is with in warranty he will get new compressor and replace it In India allrefrigerator companies give 10 years WARRANTY. If warranty has expired it isbest to purchase a new refrigerator. Q9 What is it that we as Indians arecollectively doing wrong? A9 Himanshu Saini, If someone asks for adirty cloth to clean something, you are in India Updated 4y This:This is whatwe all are doing wrong. Majority of the people think that setting the temperatureat 16 degrees will make the room cool down quickly, but it does not work likethat. You see, thecompressor will work exactly the same amount whether the temperature is set upat 23 or 16 degrees. The purpose of setting temperature on the A.C is that, when the room temperature will reach the level of temperature set up by you onthe thermostat then the compressor will turn off without turning off the A.Cfan. Then again when thetemperature will rise above your desired temperature the compressor will turnon. This saves a lot of Energy, as well as your electricity bill. The temperature at which the human body is mostcomfortable is 23.5 degrees centigrade, so the A.Cthermostat should be fixed either at 24 or 23 degrees. This will not onlyprevent your room from getting too cold but will also save a lot of energy. Edit 1-As some people pointed out that few newer AC’shave variable compressor which changes the cooling capacity depending on thetemperature setting. But, still It represent just a minor percentage ofAC’s in the market (less that 5 %). The above answerapplies to these AC’s as well, turning off the AC’s compressor all together vsit running at a lower percentage capacity(when it reaches your desiredtemperature setting) will definitely save more energy. Edit 2- As pointed out by some users in thecomments down below that energy saved by this answer is hard to calculate asthere are so many variables but still it did not stop some Quorans from trying.Few impressive calculations- Abhinav Mathur , Gaurav Agrawal , Sharique NaseemUser-11856345775596280402. Q10 What are some delicious South Indiandesserts that most North Indians have never heard of? A10 Nagarajan Srinivas, Love & Happinessare default states of Nature. Apr 25 Some excellentanswers already with many exotic desserts. Two simple ones from my side: 1 Sakkarai Pongal (Sweet Pongal): This traditionalsweet / dessert is both simple and easy to prepare and consume. It is insanelypopular as a divine offering (prasad) in many Tamil Nadu and other south Indiantemples. Prepared with rice, moong daal and jaggery boiled in milk, coated witha lot of ghee and adorned with cashew nuts, raisins and cardamom, this disheven has the unique distinction of having an entire festival named after it inTamil Nadu, the Pongal on which day the entire festivities revolve around themoments when the milk in the pot in which the sweet pongal is being cooked justboils over, and the entire family members standing around let out a throaty andhigh decibel chant of “Pongal o pongal” not once, not twice but three timeswith great pleasure. Thus the sweet pongal represents not just a dessert, butan entire culture which is predominantly Tamilian/ south Indian. 2 Appi Payasa : This is a dessert / kheer / payasamunique mostly to the Karnataka cuisine. Maida / Sooji pooris deep fried in gheeand and then to be broken into small pieces to be cooked in milk with sugar andthen adorned with cashew nuts, raisins and crushed cardamom - this kheer wouldtaste divine as a dessert. My late mother and my mother in law are both expertsin making this Appi payasam on auspicious occasions, but nowadays I am notseeing anybody from my own generation or younger doing this, nor do I find thisserved in most restaurants either in TN or Bengaluru. On a personal touch, my89 years old, ailing mother in law took the trouble of preparing both “AppiPayasam” and “Bisibele Huliyanna” (another forgotten favourite) at home for mewhen my wife visited her last time a few months back. The spirit of the oldgeneration people is sometimes mind blowing! Enjoy and have“Sweet Dreams”! All the above QA are from Quora website on 25 -07- 2022.
