Pranam
After reading the bed it struck me the history of Puranic God beds @ Sayana
as under:

Deities in reclining postures are known as sayana murthis . Lord Vishnu in
a reclining posture is a familiar sight. But, many may be not be aware
that Lord Ram, Lord Narasimha and Lord Siva are also in reclining posture
in some temples . I have made an attempt to collate the temples .
There are 27 Divya desam where Lord blesses us with Sayana Kolam . There
are Abhimana Sthalams and other Sthalams where Lord Vishnu is in reclining
position like Aadhirengam etc . We are confining ourselves to Divya desams
only . Sayana murthis are classified as Bhujanga sayanam,Bhoga Sayanam ,
Virasayanam , Sthala Sayanam, Uddhana Sayanam and Manikka Sayanam based on
their characteristics and intricate details .
Bhujanga Sayanam. In this posture Sri Vishnu’s consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo
Devi are on either side of his holy feet.; the latter close to the feet.
There are 20 of them including Thirupparkadal not on earth .They are 1)
Srirangam , 2)Thirukkarambanoor,( Uthamar koil) 3)Thiru Anbil, 4)
Thirupper Nagar, ( Koviladi) 5)Thirupullam Boothankudi,6) Thiru
Aadhanoor,7) , Kapisthalam,8) Thiruvelliyankudi, 9) Thiru Siru Puliyur,
10) Thiruthetriambalam 11) Thiruvekka 12)Parameswara Vinnagaram
(Kancheepuram) 13) Thiruvellore 14) Thiruvattaru 15) Srivaikundam
16)Thirukkolur 17)Thirukkodal 18)Thirukoshtiyur 19) Thiruvananthapuram 20)
Thirupparkadal Thirumeyyam is another kshetram where you can worship
the Sri Sathymoorthy Perumal and also have darshan of Sri Azhagiyameyyar
in sayana thirukkolam. Azhagiyameyyar is bigger than Srirangam .
Anantha Sayanam Sree Anantha Padmanabhaswamy Trivandrum. Serpent bed
Anantha Sayanam.
Veera Sayanam Thiruindalore ( Mayiladuthurai) in this posture. God
is lying on the snake bed with the right arm on the pillow, the left
stretched. But his two upper hands hold his distinctive attributes –
conch (Sangu) and magical disc (Chakra).
Sthala Sayanam Bare floor reclining without Adi Seshan .
Thirukadalmallai ( Mahabalipuram)
Vadapatra Sayanam
Srivilliputhur (The Lord who sleeps on the banyan tree leaf)
Uddana Sayanam Sarangapani temple Kumbakonam ( Resting on Adiseshan but
slightly lifted position to speak to Thirumazhisai Alwar . Azwar asked
the Lord “ Are you resting as your leg pains due to long walk . Lord
Perumal tried to get up to grace Azwar . Azwar asked the Lord to grace him
in the same position. That is why Lord is in slightly lifted position
Dharba Sayanam On sacred grass – Viratham before seeking permission
from Samudragupta Rajan to build Sethu .Thirupullani
Bhoga Sayanam Thiru Chitrakoodam ( Chidambaram) . Normally Lord
Brahma is seen in a sitting form on the naval chord of Lord Vishnu . Here
Lord Brahma chose to stand as a respect to Lord Vishnu who was to judge the
winner competition taking place in the Chitra sabha . All the three murtis
can be seen from one place .
Manikka Sayanam Thiruneermalai – near Chennai City . The speciality here
is Lord Narayana appears in all four forms, sitting, sleeping , walking
and standing as Ranganatha, Narasimha, Neervanna Perumal and Ulagalandha
Perumal. Giving Thiruneermalai a special status, Thirumangai compares it
with Naraiyur, Thiruvali, ThiruKudanthai and Thirukkoilur and reveals that
one can see the Lord of all these four temples at Thiruneermalai. In his
reference to Thiru Naraiyur, Thirumangai Azwar talks about the standing
Lord residing amidst groves in the well watered town. He refers to
Kudanthai as the Lord in a sleeping posture, to Thiruvali, where the Lord
is seen sitting and to Thirukkoilur as the one in a standing posture. In
conclusion Thirumangai Azwar says that on the hills of Thiruneermalai, one
can find him in all these four postures and hence it is sacred to visit
this place. Thiru Mangai Azhvaar came here to sing praise of the Lord but
heavy rains flooded the place and he could not reach this temple. Having
come this far, he decided to wait till the rains stopped. It proved to be a
long wait of 6 months before Thiru Mangai Azwar could meet his Lord. The
hill on which he stayed during these 6 months still exists and is called
ThiruMangai Azhvaar PuramIISayana Ramar
Sayana Ramar temples are rare . One can see in Thirupullani near Rameswaram
or at Ponvilantha Kalathur near Chengalpet ( both Dharba Sayana Ramar) .
There are also references to Lord Rama in two other Divya Desams,
Thiruvelliyangudi and Thiru Pullaboothangudi. . According to a legend
associated with Thiruveelliyangudi, Mayasura, father of Mandodari wife of
Ravanan prayed to Lord Vishnu and observed severe penance to have His
Darshan . When He appeared , Mayasura wanted to have Darshan as Lord Rama .
Lord gave His Conch and a chakra to Garuda and gave Darshan here as
Kolavilli Ramar with his bow and arrow in his hands . That is why
Garudalwar is seen here with four hands holding Conch and Chakra . He is
known as Chathurbhuja Garuda here . At Thiru PullaBoothangudi, Valvil Ramar
in Bala Sayana Kolam but with Conch and Chakra and not bow and arrow .
Legend of this temple is associated with Jatayu Moksham like that of
Thiruputkuzhi temple .

But , the biggest one , Lord Rama in a reclining posture 18 feet long is
in Vengadampettai near Kurinjipadi Cuddalore . Venugopalaswamy and Ramar
are very beautiful . One may wonder why it is Sri Ramar and Not Lord
Ranganatha.Anandhasayana Ramar at Vengadampettai , has two hands and has no
conch and chakra as lord assumes human form. Lord keeps his head in a
stone as he was in exile in the forest. Lord Ranganatha has two consorts
Sridevi and Bhoodevi. Here Ramar has one consort. Lakshmana, avatar of
Adisesha always with Lord, exists here in the form of seven head Adhi
seshsa. More so Lord Anjaneya as bhaktha in front of his feet. It clearly
says it is a Sayana Ramar .
Sayana Narasimhar
Sayana Narasimhar is not seen anywhere . Located 3kms East of Panruti, off
the Cuddalore highway, is the Sara Narayanan temple in ThiruVathigai, a
temple whose history dates back to thousands of years. Lord Narasimha
is seen in a Sleeping Posture facing south. It is believed that Lord
Narasimha came here tired after a battle with Vakrasuran and killed him,
and is said to have taken rest. Hence he is seen in a Sayana Kolam.
Reference to this can be seen in Narasinga Puranam. This is the only temple
where Narasimha is seen in a sleeping posture.Lord Siva Sayana Kolam
Pallikondeswarar temple ( Lord Siva in reclining position ) at Surutapalli
is 2 kms from Uthukottai on the border between Tamilnadu and Andhra states
but in the Andhra state territory. The name Suruttapalli comes from the
fact that Lord Shiva is resting at the lap of Goddess Parvathi feeling a
little dizzy after consuming poison during the churning of the milky ocean
– Palli means resting, Surutta means a little dizzy.
Lord Shiva as Pallikondeeswarar is present in the reclining pose at the lap
of Goddess Parvathi as Sarva Mangalaambihai. Usually Lord Shiva is seen
only in the form of a lingam in the sanctum sanctorum and only the urchava
moorthy will be in human form. But here He is seen in human form and that
too in the reclining pose. The granite sculpture of the reclining Lord is
huge to about 16 feet, as also the image of the seated Parvathi. Sun God
and Moon God are present on either side of Goddess Parvathi; Lord Maha
Vishnu, Brahma, Lakshmi, Sage Margandeyar, Sage Agasthiar, Sage
Valmiki,Indran, Sage Naradhar , Nandikeshwarar, Lord Subrahmanya with His
Consorts, Lord Ganapathy and many devars and rishis are present in the
sanctum sanctorum as sculptures. The whole Kailasam has assembled there, a
scene which can not be seen in any other temple. Here Viboothi (holy ash)
is not given as prasadam like the other Shiva temples, instead holy
theertham is given as prasadam and blessing is done with Chadari like a
Vaishnavite temple.
Another specialty of this temple is that all deities are present with their
consorts. They are: Pallikondeeswarar – Sarva Mangalaambikai;
Valmeegishwarar – Maragathambikai; Vinayakar – Siddhi, Buddhi; Saasthaa –
Pooranai, Pushakalai; Kuberan – Sanganidhi and Padumanidhi; Dakshinamoorthy
– Taara; Kasi Viswanathar – Visalakshi. Pranam again being night time KR
