CULTURAL QA 08-2022-01 BEING A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Can a septic tank be installed toodeep? A1 Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now Though up to 33feet depth the pump can suck the contents from a septic tank, considering allaspects it is best to be up to 25 feet depth. Normally septic tanks are constructed about ten feet depth only in my area, Chennai, India.Lower depth reduces causality if any occur. Q2 Where are most UK railway stationslocated? A2 Nicholas Stone, Lifelong interest intrains. Jul 26 Exeter - my city of birth - boasts nine stations. Aremarkable number for a city of 129,000 people. There are Exeter StDavid’s, Exeter Central, Exeter St Thomas, St James Park, Polsloe Bridge, Digby& Sowton, Newcourt, Topsham and Pinhoe. Opening before the end of 2022,Marsh Barton will bring the total to ten.Exeter St David’s is the city’s main railway station.Hourly trains leave in opposite directions to London Paddington andalso to London Waterloo via Exeter Central. Picture source: Wikipedia. Acton has seven stations with the name Acton followedanother locating word - more than any other place otherthan London. There four Acton stations from the four points of the compass plusCentral, Town and Main line railway stations. Q3 Ramanujan got all of his ideas fromhis dreams, given to him by his Devi (goddess), how does it make him a genius? A3 Naveen Subramanian, Lived in Chennai,Tamil Nadu, India Thu Because he’sable to remember and recall his dream, wrote down what he learnt in dreams. In India, 15–90 age group suffer sleep disturbances related to DRC - dreamreality confusion. Only 5% remember their dreams. Among them, only a fewimplement what they learned in dreams during daytime. So medically, Ramanujan belongsto the less than 5% genius population who studied in dreams. As a kidfrom poor family in rural India, he received little formal education. “While asleep, Ihad an unusual experience. There was a red screen formed by flowing blood, as it were. Iwas observing it. Suddenlya hand began to write on the screen. I became all attention. Thathand wrote a number of elliptic integrals. They stuck to my mind. As soon as Iwoke up, I committed them to writing.” - These are the words of Srinivasa Ramanujam As a teenager, heused to wake up at midnight and write formulas. Sometimes, he slept at Namagiritemple, woke up during a dream, and write formulas on the walls and floors ofthe temple. Later, he transferred what he wrote in floors to his notebooks. Theinteresting part is - he wasn’t able to write complex formulas when he wasawake during the daytime as a teenager. So he stronglybelieved it’s the miracle of Namagiri Goddess Devi. But medical science calls it the “ power of thesubconscious mind”. There’s a region inthe brain called the temporoparietaljunction that puts in intra-sleep wakefulness. It allows us to encode and remember dreamsbetter. The mind while sleeping subconsciously runs a separate memoryunit which is different from the conscious mind. Whatever you remember inconscious mind, remains there until it’s re-accessed. Whereas whatever is inthe subconscious mind can be remembered anytime - like memories and habits. The great Aristotle believed in it and documented thatpeople are more creative in sleep. Only a few rememberdreams and used it in reality. Freud’s discovery that dreams represent wishes (1900) and Einstein’s theoryof relativity (1905) are based on similar studies. Medically, that’s not healthy. It affects one’s heart rate and immune system. Ramanujamdied at the age of 32 sufferingTB. Answering theoriginal question - Ramanujan got all of his ideas from his dreams, given tohim by his Devi (goddess), how does it make him a genius? Everyone in thispicture, except Ramanujan had formal education. Studied maths at schools and colleges. Ramanujan was theonly one who studied in dreams, remembered andrecalled his dreams and wrote almost 400 pages of formulas and theoroms beforereaching Cambridge. That …..makes him genius. Q4 Everyone needs their own vehicle fortravelling to their specific destinations. In such a scenario, can we find abetter solution to the traffic problem in India? A4 Balaji Viswanathan, Drivenextensively in 8 countries. Jul 25 There are certain fundamental laws of physics that willimpact how many vehicles can be moved in and out of a building or a bridge or aroad,in a certain time. There is no way fora billion people to have their own vehicles to get to their workplaces. Evencountries with very sparse population — say Canada and Norway — face problemswith traffic. We cannot design our cities around private transportation.India simply has no space or energy for that. In fact, there are going to be arange of pain that would come in the future for those relying on cars to move. Our cities have run out of space and more and more people canafford cars. Instead, thesolution to traffic problem is: Decongest our cities by building a range of new cities thatwill provide employment across the country, not justin a few metropolises. We need 100+ new cities that would substantially takeoff the stress from the cities. Create solutions to have employees stay close to theiroffice. This would require zoning restrictions [toencourage more residential units near commercial districts] as well as taxincentives for employees who live close to the office. Commuting should be anexception. Make metro trains practical, safer and comfortable. Inalmost every city I went to in China [nearly adozen] I have always used the Metro trains. Even without knowing Mandarin orhaving a local with me, I was able to safely navigate around the cities. Weshould replicate that directly here. Metro stations are at convenient locations, where you canshop, eat and travel. Cities with practical Metro trains — Singapore, New York,London, Mumbai are incredibly amazing to live. Build multi-modaltransport for people to easily switch from big movers to little movers. Forinstance, in Mumbai theautorickshaws queue up properly outside the railway station ready to movepeople from train to office/home without much of a fuss. Our citiesshould have trains connecting big centers, buses going around the railwaystations and last kilo-meter mode such as scooter or bicycle from bus stands toyour destination. Q5 What type of clothing should one usein a monsoon? A5 Karuna, Country Manager - India atWetter Online Updated Jul 13 The monsoon bringsalong sultry, humid and wet weather. And here are some tips to stay dry, stylish and comfortable duringthe rainy season: Wear light, flowing fabrics which let your skinbreathe Try out khadi and organic cotton for a dry, skin-infectionfree monsoon Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing, like skinnyjeans or clingy tops Choose capris and knee-length skirts to stayelegant and dry Stay away from white or light-colored clothes tosave your favorites for dried days Invest in a good quality raincoat and carry it withyou, especially if riding a two-wheeler Wear waterproof leather slip-on, floaters or strappysandals And surely keep that big black umbrellawith you! Q6 Do telephones ever run out of power? A6 David Newberry, Former At&TTechnical Instructor at AT&T (company)Updated Jul 16 Ya know, thetraditional Telephone isn’t self powered… it receives its “talk-Battery” and “ring voltage” from theconnected Land Line… The land line is like a battery 2 wireconnection… one a (+) and one a (-) The battery is rated at -48VDC, the Ring voltage is Ratedat about 90VAC.. (20Hz) The central office has transformers with 2 feeds off thelocal power, providing an “A “ battery and a “B”battery, for the central office. If the local power fails.. the Central Office (CO) wouldusually have 2 generators delivering an “A” feed and a“B” feed… IF both the local power and generatorsfail… the CO has a string of liquid cell batteries,to run the office for a while, till repairs can be made to get the local poweror a generator back on line… So, a lothas to go wrong, for the phone service, to run out of “Power”…There is redundancy to the redundancy… as I remember my schooling… Maybe just use yourcell phone, and bypass a lot of this stuff…. My note- For cell phone working there are stationswhere the signal is received, further processed and send to a number stations to reachthe called person’s location. These stations require permanent power supply and stand by generatorsupply and battery supply. If every thing fails one may not be able toreach the called person. Normally called tower fail though it is actually a receive/transmit station fail Q7 How do I stop a leaking pipe withwater in it? A7 Colin Payne, Registered CaliforniaArchitect 2y It depends on the type of pipe, the pressure insidethe pipe and if it’s leaking at a fitting or in the pipe itself. If it’s copper or galvanized, you’ll have to shut off the water and open the nearest fitting inthe case of threaded pipe and then replace whatever is leaking. If it’s copper, you can turn off the water, cut thepipe, drain the water and the sweat in a coupling if it’s in the pipe. If it’sa fitting joint, you might be able to remove the fitting and sweat in a newone. Or, you cancall a plumber and the plumber will know just what to do. 2ND ANSWER- Annamalai, Former Chief MechanicalEngineer , Engg Consultant2y The followingmethods are used to plug leak in water: (1). For smaller leak domestic use : steel pipe:Reduce the line pressure, by opening a neighboring tap. Remove/clean the scalesand oxides on the surface. Apply M-seam at the leak location and hold tillhardening/settlement. You may use a band or other holding devices. There arealso other epoxies, for quick setting. People also use Hampel splash zonecompound. People also use: Take a small copper plate, have a small rubber seallittle larger than the leak hole size. Apply m-seal outside the seal, on thecopper plate and apply all at the leak location and hold till settling. Readymade C clamps are also used. (2). PVC. follow the above. Use 2 half sleeve andsolution and clamp at the location. There also epoxies, like Aasirvad,wet-bond, UPVC solution or simply blue solution, to handle with water. (3). For petroleum pipeline leak: Petroleum isdangerous and it will catch fire, if there is spark or static charge. As riskand danger are involved, qualified people and a qualified procedure are needed, for repair work. Plugging the Leak: The pressure is reduced to 30%of normal working pressure. Flow is maintained to wash away the heat. Smallerlength of Bamboo stick to match the hole size is used to plug the leak first. There are ready made steel sleeves from Plidco couplings. Carbon dioxide orargon gas is purged below the sleeves. Welding at the joint. Soap Leak test oncompletion of root welding. Complete the welding. (4). Nuclear Piping: If there is a leak or crack, ahighly risky and quick work is done by qualified people with qualifiedprocedure. Freezing and forming ice plug on both sides of the leak : Heavywater and water are frozen(ice) using high freezing coils just outside theleak/crack zone. Cracked or leaked area is cut and removed and new pipe isadded, by welding. On test completion, water in the pipe, the line will be putinto service. Q8 Why do we breathe into our nostrils? What is the significance of the nostrils? A8 Ken Saladin, Textbook author andprofessor emeritus Jul 25 What you really mean, I think, is what is thesignificance of the nasal cavity. The nostrils are justthe two anterior holes that allow the air to flow in and out. Without them, thenasal cavity couldn’t do anything. So what are the purposes of the nasal cavity? To cleanse, warm, andhumidify the inhaled air and detect odors—none of which the oral cavity can domore than minimally. Q9 Which country has a better railwaynetwork, China or the US? A9 David J Wong, I’ve travelled a lot inChina1y Railways have a different function in the US comparedwith China, carrying primarily freight. And in this, theUnited States rail system is arguably one of the best and most efficient in theworld. I’m always fascinated to see these 200-car, 3-mile long behemoths roarby, loaded with containers or commodities. But with the exception of the East Coast, passengers arealmost an afterthought. Given the vast distancesbetween major cities (particularly in the western US), relatively lightpopulation density, and the general preference to drive or fly, it’s easy tounderstand why. In contrast, in China, while railways carry a lot offreight traffic, passenger travel is far moresignificant. China has by far the largest high-speed passenger rail network inthe world. An astonishing 3.660 billion trips were made by train in 2019,generating 1.47 trillion passenger kilometers — compared to 10.3 billionpassenger kilometers in the US.tl;dr - for freight transport, it’s theUS. For passenger rail, it’s China. My note- I have added the QA for informationabout the rail system in the two countries. Q10 Can a refrigerator act like an airconditioner? A10 Nithesh Ramanan, Did a course in HVAC!Knows few basics! Trying to learn more! 6y Refrigerators and Air-Conditioners work with the sameprinciple. They take out heat from a particular systemand throw it to the surrounding. Refrigerators - Heat is taken from the vegetables, fruits etc ( inside the refrigerator) which makes it the system. It iseliminated to the surrounding ( i.e., Where the Refrigerators are placed maybethe Kitchen ). Air-Conditioners - Heat is taken from Humans,Computers, etc inside a particular space which forms the system and iseliminated into the surrounding (i.e., Outside the house). So if you wantto make your refrigerator to act as an Air-Conditioner, then you’ll have tokeep the rear part of the Refrigerator outside the room and open theRefrigerator’s door. But the Refrigerators are capableof removing heat from small heat sources so they won’t handle large heatsources efficiently. It will take a lot of time tocool the area with a refrigerator. It is great to explore such thingsby asking like this. But it is a bad idea if implemented.
