CULTURAL QA 08-2022-05 BEING A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Is a slight wobble ceiling fan okay? A1 Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004) Just now In 2003 whileworking in Trivandrum telecom Circle office, an annex building was about tocomplete and on completion my cabin was shifted to the annexed building . The fan provided was wigglingand it was so in all cabins. The reason was weightless motor in the unit.I was using the cabin for more than a year. A wiggling ceiling fan initiallymay create some fear. A google search for the amount of oscillation permittedgives the following result- “While a small wiggle in ceiling fans up to 1/8-inch is normal, morethan that can indicate a larger problem. A noisy, off balanceceiling fan can lead to inefficient operation and excessive wear on the fanmotor”. Q2 Doctors, what is the most importantthing you forgot to tell a patient before surgery? A2 Tiny Nair, Cardiologist at PRSHospital, Trivandrum 2y I was a housesurgeon in the department of surgery. I was asked to take the ‘informed consent’for the patient going in for surgery for ca-prostate (cancer prostate). The standardsurgery for ca-prostate is to do an orchiectomy (removalof the testicles). This removes the source of ‘testosterone’hormone, leading to shrinkage of the prostate cancer. Subject-80-year-old male. Rapidly advancingforehead ‘furrow’ chasing his receding hairline, thick spectacles trying to‘weight-lift’ the saggy eyelids, shrubs of grey hair growing out of the parapetof his ear; all together he had the classical look of the grandpa straight fromthe movie ‘Up’. He looked at me andsmiled. I told him about the details of surgery scheduled for the next day, therisks, the benefits, approximate timings etc. He nodded intermittently; or so Iimagined. ‘Thanks youngdoctor’ he smiled. Operation day. There was a bigcommotion going on. The gentleman was visibly upset; arguing with the anaesthetist. I inched close to investigate. ‘you want to removemy…what? Are you crazy? I am 80…no way’. ‘I am absolutelynot willing’. He was sitting upbolt upright on the cot. ***That’s whenI noticed the chunky ‘hearing aid’, jutting out of his hairy ear, like aabandoned sprinkler in a neglected garden. I had forgottento ask him to put on his hearing aid. My note- ***I am not able to control my laugh on reading the lines. Dr Mr Tiny nair is also a satirical writer. Hisanswer appeared in Quora after a long period. Q3 What are Air India's premium economyseats like? A3 Prasanna Bhalerao, M. Sc. inElectronics & Physics, Fergusson College, Pune Tue I am not aware thatAir India has Premium Economy seating class. At least they didn't have tilllast month. My wife and I travelled to London for our son'sconvocation last month and we travelled via Premium Economy on Virgin Atlantic.I was looking at Air India and they didn't have such a class. Business class was too expensive to pay from own pocket. For the record,Premium Economy has the following advantages: Wider seats byabout 4 inches- Extra legroom by about6 inches- More inclination on seats- Foot rest (some even have calf rests butnot on VA) Seating in thefront (so smoother ride)- Separatepriority check-in- Priority boardingwith business class- Priority exitafter business class- Luggage arriveson belt first Meals are servedwith real cutlery and tea/ coffee in real china. Can't say whether meal wasdifferent or better. Snack bar is alwaysopen (this happens on Standard Economy class also on some airlines) TV is slightlybigger-Overall better Fare service Fare is 1.5 timesmore. In my opinion, it was worth it. Sample pics of VA Premium Economy seatsbelow: If AI does startthe PE class, which they should, I expect it to look like above. Q4 What are some things that only surgeonscan do? A4 Dr. MK, Doctor Mon Cut your body, remove an appendix and sew it back. Keep operating forhours straight with an extraordinary level of focus Mock physicians with '’Surgery starts where Medicineends". Be cool about everything. A person whois confident enough to cut your body, see it bleed and then sew it back tonormal, isn't worried about anything in life. Surgeon will askyou questions from anatomy and ridicule you for not knowing the basics. Surgeons are ingeneral cool dudes who have an easy going approach towards life. No frets. Noregrets Q5 Is it worth it to spend more than 1lakh crore rupees on a bullet train rather than building airports? A5 Deepesh Deomurari, Senior Art of LivingFaculty, Pune, India Updated 2y Yes - Very Very worthy. Bullet train hascapacity of 1250 passenger and 12 bullet trains can make it run - 1 bullettrain every hour. 30,000 people per day or in one month it can move an entirecity to new location! Plane capacity is 200 so it is just 15% of traincapacity. Airplane is two times expensive than Bullet Train! In future, it willbe made in India, generating atleast 2 million employment! Further, time issame - You have to go Airport 2 hours before time and departure also take 30minutes. So eventually it is the same time. In 6 hours you can travel 1000+ kmin bullet train at 320 km/hour. Further train routecan have 8–10 stations while planes can have only 1–2 stops. India is a big country and bullet train is very muchneeded. For example, If I travel from Bangalore toJabalpur, it takes 36 hours! In bullet train it will be 6 hours (including stoppage). So, I can go to hometown whenever I want. Fare of Bullet train will be near ACII tier. So most of us will be able to afford occasional/urgent unavoidabletravel. We arealready very late in introducing bullet trains. It will give very heavy boost to Tier II andTier III cities; which are deprive of very heavy investments due toconnectivity limitations. Also remember,Japan has given soft loan and considering inflation, Bullet Train is almostFree for India as it is under Public Private Partnership. Lets connect andhelp in making India a superpower - Q6 Why is the earth pin on a three pinplug made bigger than the others? A6 Murali Krishnan. Studied at Safety Updated8y To protect you from electric shock. When we useelectrical appliances with metal bodies, we require protection against possibleelectric shock. Ifthere is a fault current (leakage) inside the appliance, the whole metal casebecomes live. If you happen to touch it, a current will flow throughyou to the earth (ie. electric shock). Hence, to prevent electric shock, weneed to ensure that the system is properly earthed (= 'grounded'). This way ifyou touch a faulty appliance, you don't get electrocuted! So, why is theearth pin made bigger? 1. The earth pin on a plug is longer than the live andneutral pins. This means the earth pin is the first to connect and the last todisconnect. When inserting the plug, the earth connection is madebefore the current carrying contacts of the plug become live. When withdrawing the plug, the current carrying contactsshall separate before the earth connection is broken. Thus, the earthingconnection is always maintained to improve safety. 2. Many wallsockets have safety shutters (see image) on the live and neutral lines toprevent children from inserting conducting materials which may result inelectric shock. Insertion of a longer (earth) pin helps in opening theshutters, facilitating the insertion of other two pins. These are calledEarth-pin operated shutters. 3. Though it isimpossible to insert the plug into the socket upside down, one may try to insert the plug top in a misaligned position (for e.g. trying to insert the earth pin into thephase socket with the other two pins further down out of the socket). Hence, the earth pin is made thicker so that even by mistakeit cannot be inserted into the live or neutral hole of the socket. This prevents earth pin from establishing an electrical contact with the liveterminal. As you can see, every effort is taken to protect you from electric shock. Q7 What will happen if the phase andneutral of a ceiling fan is reversed? A7 Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004) Just now Normallyin switch board only phase is available in the switch point.Neutral wire is looped in the switch box. Neutral lead is extended for plugpoints and normally will be looped. Purposely ifneutral wire is cut and connected to a ceiling fan switch, neutral lead will beswitched through the switch. Purposely if you connect phase to the neutralthere will be neutral current all time, It would create short circuit. and fuse will blow off/ circuit breaker will cut off thesupply. If one reverse the phase and neutral IN FAN, fan may rotate in opposite direction. If fuse is notblown/ circuit breaker not cut off , neutral current will give short circuit toall equipment connected and they will be damaged. Just imagine acondition of carrying neutral current through an electric GAIZER . On touching the tap theperson will get fatal electrical shock. Q8 Do train engines ever turn off? If not,why are locomotives kept running? A8 Andrew, I am a Train driver &enthusiast With railway Photographs Updated Feb 23 Modern traction units will automatically switch off after atime, when the driver removes his master key. Older Locomotivesare often kept ticking over between duties as they can be awkward to start. To start a class 37you have to :- Enter the engineroom and switch on the battery, Check Oil and Water levels then return to thecab. Insert Master key into the power control (Forward/Reverse)and turn to Engine Only. This then starts thepriming pump (Triple Pump) feeding water, Oil and fuel to the engine. Leave fora few minutes to get engine oil pressure up. Then looking at the engine stoppedalarm light (Bright Red) press and hold the start button. Wait until the enginefires and the bright red light goes dim… Well that's thetheory. In my experience you need to plug the battery into a charger if thelocomotive has been stood a while. When starting the engine the area disappears in a cloud of smoke. I’ve also at the ofswitching on not had the priming pump start so I returned to the engine room, through the radiator compartment, The door slammed shut behind me....The pumpstarted of its own accord. Q9 Are Watermelons and Yams the only fruitand vegetables native to the Africa? A9 Firew Afera, May 30 Oh, no. Enset(False Banana) is a tropical crop endemicto the South western region of Ethiopia. As the name indicates, it is a``relative`` of the real banana plant and resembles it. However, the tree does not bear anybanana. Instead, this food is made from it: ``Kocho`` is oftenserved on ``Koba``, and Kobaessentially means the leaf of the Enset tree. Kocho is not eatenalone; it accompanies main dishes like cheese, cabbage or meat. Q10 Most of us just can't stand havingthe same food again and again. We have to eat different foods for every meal. Why? What drives this? A10 Alice Twain,Eating and cooking for 40years.Jul 23 The fact of beingHomo sapiens and not, for instance, cat. Homo sapiens is an extreme omnivorous. There are are reallyfew foods we can’t eat compared to most other mammals. We evolved toadapt to essentially every land ecosystem on Earth, and we did so by adaptingour digestive apparatus to be the most indiscriminate possible. This came at aprice. As our digestive system became less and less specialized, it gainedflexibility but lost the very specialization that allows most mammals to drawas much nutrition possible from their food. What gives panda the ability to live and thrive on bambooalone, what makes anteaters able to live on ants and termites alone is theextreme specialization, which allows their bodies not only toextract all possible nutrients from their limited diet, but also to produce ontheir own the nutrients missing from the diet. Our digestive system can digestmost foods, but does digest each of these food in a very bad way. We don’textract all possible nutrients from it (for instance, we can’t digestcellulose), and we lost the ability to produce many of the nutrients we need. Infact, in order to have a satisfying nutrition we need toeat the most varied diet possible. This is notabout taste, this is about having a healthy diet that keeps our body working inthe best way. In order to achieve a good nutrition we need as much variety aswe can pack in our meals. Eatinga limited range of foods over and over it’s just boring, it’s first andforemost unhealthy. And that’s why we get bored so fast. Essentiallyif we eat the same meal multiple times in a row, our brain tells us “this isboring” but it’s actually translating a message from our body which says “Ilack nutrition”. As themechanism is based on food flavor and texture, it switches on also if we eat arepetitive but balanced meal. But overall, this sense of boredom isthe best mechanism we have to tell us to eat more varied food All the above QA are from Quora website on 04-08- 2022.
