Q1         Howmany engines does a bullet train have?

A1         NicholasStone; Life long passenger. Life long relationship with
trains. Jul 20

Also known as shinkansen, the Japanese bullet trainshave an innovative traction
system.

Traditionally,a passenger train would have a locomotive (engine) providing the
motive power hauling attachedcarriages. Launched in 1964, the shinkansen trains
did away with these usual motive arrangements.

Instead, there are traction motors underneath all carriages providing
motivepower, rather than a separate locomotive. These arrangement improvestrack
adhesion, spreads the motive power along the length of train and
improvesperformance.

Shinkansen 0series rolling stock. There are are noseparate locomotives or
engines. Roof mounted pantographs draw their power fromoverhead electric wires.
This power is then distributed by cables alongthe length of train to traction
motors under each carriage.

Q2         Howdoes coconut oil help your face?

A2         Plug NPlay Biosciences Pvt Ltd, Organic and natural skin care regime
Jul 27

If there is one tree that is revered for its numerousbenefits to mankind, then
it has to be a coconut tree! This is becausevirtually every part of the tree,
from the stem, to leaves and flowers to thefruit, finds application in our
everyday lives.

The coconut isliterally one tough nut to crack, but once it is cracked it is a
treasure troveof minerals and nutritious elements that are extremely beneficial
to the humanbody.

Coconut is very high in protein, carbohydrates, fibre, manganese, copper,
selenium, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, potassium etc.,besides a range of
antioxidants.

Besides its kernel and water, coconut oil too is extremelybeneficial for our
bodies, especially the face. Here are some of the keybenefits of coconut oil
for the face:

It is extremely hydrating in nature. Hence, the overnight application ofcoconut
oil repairs damaged skin and also leaves behind a healthyglow.

Coconutoil    is rich in antioxidants. This notonly helps ourskin to heal
itself, but also, protects it from further damage.

Coconut oilcontains Lauric acid making it naturally anti-bacterial and
anti-fungal. This makes it anideal medicine for treating acne and other minor
skin ailments.

Coconut oil caneasily be absorbed by the skin. This makes it Mother Nature’s
own calming lotion for infants andchildren.

The benefits of Coconut oil become more evident on theface when it is left
overnight. Here is how you do it the right way:

Before bedtime, wash your palms clean and dry themthoroughly.

Take a few drops of coconut oil in your palm and rubit vigorously to liquefy
the oil.

Now massage your face. The massage not just activatesthe blood vessels below
but also improves circulation.

Leave it for some time before washing off the facewith warm water and then
clean it with the help of tissue paper to removeexcess oil.

The next morning, make sure you use a face wash toclean the remaining oil from
your skin.

While coconutoil is very safe, there are just two precautions:

People withoily skin must avoid using coconut oil on their faces.
Alternatively, they canapply smallquantities and thoroughly rinse their face
soon after application instead ofleaving it overnight.

Make sure that you use extra virgin coconut oil instead of thecommercially
available ones. This is because the extra virgin coconut oil isobtained by a
cold-pressed method instead of the hot-pressed commercial method.Cold pressing
ensuresthat all the vital ingredients of the coconut oil are retained.

One of the most reliable ways of procuringcold-pressed oil is using Camia extra
virgin coconut oil.

Camia coconut oil is not just USDA-certified organicbut is also silicon-free,
hexane-free, dermatologically tested, comes inplastic-free containers and is
processed in ISO-certified plants. Even the rawmaterials procured are obtained
from sustainable cultivation partners and byfollowing fair trade practices.

So, if you desire to have blemish-free and glowingskin, then don’t rely on
chemical-based treatments, but surrender to MotherNature and enjoy the
guilt-free benefits of coconut oil for your face.

Q3         Iseating apple seeds harmful or poisonous? Are they bad for you?

A3         LuciaGarcia, Worked at Hospitals Wed

Apples ripen every autumn, and with the help of preservationtechnology, apples
can be eaten all year round.

Apple seeds are not recommended when eating applesbecause apple seeds contain a
plant compound called amygdalin.

Amygdalin is part of the seed's chemical defensesystem and is converted to
cyanide in the body when the seeds are chewed anddigested.

Cyanide is highly toxic, it interferes with the oxygensupply to cells and can
cause death within minutes in high enough doses.

However, thecyanide released by apple seeds is very small, and you need to Eat
About 150 to200 Apple Seeds at a Time to Be Poisoned.

An averageapple contains only about five to eight seeds, and even if a few
apple seedsare eaten by mistake, there will be no symptoms of poisoning

Q4         Whatwould happen if I left a ceiling fan on (non-stop) for 2 years?

A4         GangaShankar, Worked at Tech Mahindra (2014–2017)5y

The fan wouldbe designed for x amount of operational time. By you achieving
that x amount of operation timefaster than intended, the fan would not work as
intended after that x amount oftime.

But you won’tbe able to run it nonstop for 2 years. the motors and bearings
aren’t designed forsuch abuse load and heat

My note- I recollect the incident of fire inTrivandrum secreteriet by running
an old fan over night about three months backor so, forgot to switch OFF after
staff left.

Q5         Whichfood tastes better when it is consumed a day or two later?

A5         SeetaramanVishwanath Iyer,Specialist by profession, voracious reader
by choice Mon

We have this habit of putting water in leftover rice for the night in a
mudpotwe have at home, the rice gets well fermented during the night

And then Momremoves little bit of water and adds either buttermilk or curd to
this rice and also addlittle bit of salt, green chillies, ginger, onions
chopped into fine pieces andmixing the entire thing together

You can keep the consistency as per your convenience,It can be either smooth or
watery and it will go well with your taste buds.

And the bestpart is we don't use artificial refrigeration to keep this cool
instead put a wet, damp cloth to keepthe mud vessel chilled

We have it when it's finely chilled and my Mom callsit by it's local name,
Neeragaram

On special occasions, Neeragaram is consumed withinteresting sides of fried
curd chillies or shallot onions.

This is one ofthe best foods to have for the hot summers to cool down the heat
from your bodyThis Neeragaramoften gives me the village life vibes because it
is also the food many farmersacross Tamil Nadu consume after a hard hot day at
the fields.

The rice can bekept in the water for one or two days as per your convenience so
that the rice becomes well fermented and the tastegets well enhanced. You
should try this at your home too.

My note- Thepresent day chemical manure used rice may give foul smell 2nd day,
if at all kept in fridge. We give to cows.

Another point which came to my mind is old rice is Patthu. Normally
Brahminswill not use it. Especiallyorthodox. I just had discussion of it with
one member, I thought ofputting in group now.

Q6         Whatare the reasons for a ceiling fan failing to work?

A6         RPDeshpande, B.Tech (Hon), Elec., F.I.E from I IT BOMBAY (Graduated
1966)2y

The capacitorin auxiliary winding of fan has deteriorated and its value has
gone down toolow or hasbecome open circuits, to be of any use, or it may have
burnt.

If thecapacitor does not work, a single phase split-phase capacitor run motor
cannot start withoutcapacitor, but can run at some low speed (mostly with
humming noise) if rotatedby mechanical jerk in any direction. If it runs this
way, the motor can burn out. Youmust get the capacitor replaced with same
rating, and the fan will runproperly.

Q7         Whyare caves mostly found in Maharashtra?

A7         Asmaka(अश्मक).Interested in history, Jul 24

There areapproximately 1,500 rock-cut caves in India, of which “70-80%" are
inMaharashtra mainly because of the mighty Sahyadri mountain range.

Pandavleni Caves   Bhaja Caves

These volcanic rocks are good for carving. The traderoutes wound through the
Western Ghats. Most of the caves are along the traderoutes.

Many Scholarsbelieve that the traders would keep their luggage at the base and
spend thenight in a cave.Almost all caves have water tanks or cisterns carved
in the rocks. The volcanic rock of theSahyadris is porous, so from the top of
the mountain, the water would percolateto the rocks below.

Those 2nd century B.C. architects knew how to catchthe stream. There are huge
tanks that have water for the whole year. Even when there is drought outside,
these watertanks never dry and that is true even today

Q8         How doyou know if a tomato is ready to eat?

A8         BrockPan-Yellow, SVP Vegetation Management at my backyard garden (25
years)UpdatedJul 14

Easy. Wait till it turns red.

But that mightnot work if you grow Green Giant heirloom tomatoes. They stay
greenwhen ripe. And theytaste altogether different from any stage of red
tomato. These are not what youuse for “fried green tomatoes”. That’s made from
unripe red tomatoes thathaven’t yet developed enough sugar.

Green Giant is both sour and sweet. Your mouth andeyes won’t believe each other
when you bite into it.

So how do you know if a tomato is ripe, like for real? The best way is to feel
thetomato. If it’s abit soft, it’s ready to eat. Too firm, and it’s still
growing.

After you’ve grown heirlooms for a few years, youstart to see when each
individual variety is ready. But the firmness test isfail-safe.

BONUS: CherokeeGreen is another green-when-ripe tomato. Slice it open, the meat
is lime green.

Way sweeter than it looks. Your heirloom garden is notcomplete without at least
one green tomato plan

Q9         Whyare all dogs banned from Antarctica since April 1994?

A9         LoisL. Kersey,Wed

In the past it was common practice to bring dogs to Antarctica. The dogs served
as draftanimals and helped transport supplies and equipment. Dogs made
itpossible to get around efficiently on the frozen continent. They were
reliableand important to the well-being of many expedition members, who enjoyed
playingand talking with them.

As early as1898-1900, Norwegian polar explorer Carsten Borchgrevink took 90
dogs toAntarctica. WhenRoald Amundsen conquered the South Pole in 1911, he
brought approximately 98dogs to that continent. Unfortunately, most of these
dogs were slaughtered and used as food for other dogs and humans.Only eleven
dogs returned from the South Pole. Later expeditions also useddogs, even after
using tracked vehicles.

In 1994 theAntarctic Environmental Protection Protocol was ratified. Paragraph
15 of theProtocol states that dogs cannot be introduced because of the risk of
bringinginfections, specifically because distemper (a disease of dogs) could
potentially spread from dogs to native Antarctic seals.

Q10              Everwonder why the ceiling fans spin slow in the summer and
very fast in thewinter?

A10       KrishnaReddy, Former Retired Assistant Engineer in HMT Ltd. 2y

Not all thetime, but during peak load hours, the speed of the ceiling fan gets
reduced asthe input supply voltage will be less due to the peak load on the
distribution transformerin that area. Duringsummer season maximum consumers
puts on the AC’s, chiller units, andrefrigerators will be continuously gets on
and off to keep up the settemperature. And during summer season the hot air
available in theroom go to the top roof and ceiling fan blades face more
pressure of the airwhen flows from bottom to top of the room. Due to the above
reasons the ceilingfan runs slow when compared to the winter season.
