CULTURAL QA 08-2022-08 BEING A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Whydo non-human apes look more similar to our archaic ancestors? In other words, why did humans seem to evolve far more drastically than the other apes? A1 Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Jul 25 To someextent it’s an oddity of the way we usually imagine our ancestors, rather thanhow they really were. Current thinking is that our lastcommon ancestor with the chimps might have been a bit more like us than it waslike a chimp. But also, it’sbecause we evolved for higher intelligence. Other great apes have more powerfuljaws than us, but they tend to power those jaws by having muscles strappedright across the top of the skull. We got rid of those to enable greaterexpansion of the brain case, but that led to a smaller jaw and shorter face. And we notice changes to theface more than we notice the fact that e.g. chimps are probably much morequadrupedal than our common ancestor was, because they adapted to life in densejungle. My note- If we look at photographs/pictures drawn of great grand pas really there is differencefrom present generation. Q2 Ifliving in cities like New York and San Francisco are so expensive, then how canpeople who work low-paying jobs afford to live there? A2 Ke'Aun Afrofuturist Cosmopolitan Aug 2 Urbanites do not livelike suburban or rural people. Some things thatmake living in NYC or SF while poor bearable: No Car. This is a big one. Most people in these citiesdo not own cars, and if they do they aren’t using them all the time. Poorpeople especially will just use public transport. So the poor are not paying for parking, car note, autoinsurance, repairs, gas, etc. That’s a significant expense for manyAmericans — poor New Yorkers and San Franciscans don’t have to deal with that. More and Better Jobs. Low pay in NYC and SF is anorder of magnitude better than low pay in very different environments. Min wage in NYC and SF is $15 and$16.99 respectively, and most bad jobs will pay a little above that rate atleast. There is also better opportunity for side hustles and extrawork — think the gig economy (Uber, DoorDash, etc) and other such work. Theseside opportunities are much harder to find in smaller locations. Roommates & Family. People always skimp out onthis option. It’s very, very easy to get roommates in these cities. Oneroommate will cut the rent bill in half, which is instantly game changing. There’s also the option to live with family, which a lot of poor people do tosave money. That’s what my mom did when she hit hard times — moved in with herparents in their NYC apartment. Government Intervention: NYC and SF heavily userent control, welfare aid, public housing, and other methods to ensure that thepoor can live in their cities (living well is another issue). So the trulydestitute can turn to City Hall if they have to. It’s very possible to live in these cities while poor. Not necessarily pleasantly, but being poor is not known for pleasantness. My family and Iwere poor in NYC for my entire childhood (and then some). We made it work. Q3 Whatkind of professional can diagnose what’s causing a problem with my gas cooktop? A3 Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now Look at the companymanufactured the cook-top. Call their service number. Company will send theirengineer/technician. If within warranty period parts and service is free.Otherwise you have to pay. Local cook-topservice people are also there. They may charge irrespective of warranty. In India mostcompany technicians are engineering degree holders. Q4 Whatcould be the reason a house kitchen stove would emit fire spontaneously throughthe knob when in use? How do we solve this (stove with 4 burners but fire seenin 1 knob)? A4 Nishant Shrimali, Founder at Kitchen N Appliances(2019–present)2y The chances are, due to any jerk while moving it or something like that theKnob might have gotten a hit. ***Other reason such as use heavy utensils or pressure could be anotherreason. Now as the flamesare emitting, which means gas leakage is there. I suggest you call a skillrepair person as soon as possible. He will just tighten the knob and you may begood to go.*** Many women doesnot understandthey should not keep heavy vessels. For heavy vessels there are special LPGdistribution and stoves. My note- First he has to switch OFF the regulator switchin LPG cylinder before attempting other things. Q5 Whyis 100-degree heat so dangerous in the United Kingdom? A5 Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Jul 29 Because it’s unusual. Our housesare designed to collect and hold in heat, and our countryside is covered fromcoast to coast in dense grass, bushes and bracken which, if they encounter aprolonged dry spell followed by a hot snap, as happened this year in England, become one giant tinder box. Q6 Whathappens to stomach acid after it goes through your intestine? A6 Ken Saladin, Textbook author andprofessor emeritus Fri It doesn’t go through your intestine. It gets neutralizedalmost as soon as it enters the intestine, withininches of the stomach, by the sodium bicarbonate secreted by the pancreas. That’s our own natural antacid, there to protect the stomach wall from thestomach acid. Granted, if you eat habanero peppers, it might feel likethere was acid coming out your other end the next day, but it’s not. Q7 Israinwater 100% fresh? A7 David Thomas, Professional Engineer,Civil, Alaska7mo 100% fresh, as in no salt?Yes. It is distilled water, evaporated from the oceans, lakes, land and plantsand then cools enough through atmospheric air movement to condense and comedown as rain. Only very near the seashore can precipitation have anysalinity. That arises from wave action creating allsizes of droplets from liters that crash back down, rain-drop-sized ones thatfall meters away, to mist-sized and smaller droplets of water that can becarried hundreds of meters ashore. I’ve diagnosed and resolved severalequipment problems with systems located within 500 meters of an ocean shorethat weren’t adequately protected against “salt air”. 100% pure? While it starts off as water vapor, when raincondenses into droplets, air components (O2, N2, CO2) and pollutants (CO, NOx,SOx) will dissolve into it. Hence, “acid rain” fallshundreds of kilometers downwind of coal-aired power plants and limestone iseroded by CO2 in rainwater (and more so, by CO2 picked up in the root zone ofthe soil) making it slightly acidic. Also, airborne dust and pollens will be brought down toground level by rain, so the first rain will to fallwon’t be as pure as rainthatfalls a few hours later. Q8 Whathappens if you put galvanized steel in contact with concrete? A8 Ciro Pabon, B.S. in Civil Engineering& Highway Engineering, Universidad La Gran Colombia (Graduated 1984)Jul 18 Concrete is veryalkaline, so much that it can easily burn your skin, as I have written aboutelsewhere. Ciro Pabon's answerto When curing concrete forms underwater, in an isolated pool or pond, is thewater contaminated by the chemical reaction, as in unable to be used for plant irrigationor watering cattle? Concrete mixesabove a pH of 13.3 react with galvanized steel rebars, which are covered inzinc, forming hydroxyzincates (CaZnOH-H20). That reaction only happens when the concrete is curing. Fortunately, thehydroxyzincates protect the rest of the zinc galvanizing coat, but the essential grip betweenconcrete and rebars is weakened because of the dust created at the galvanizedsteel surface. ***Thus, it is recommended to use (really) chromed barsthat protect the galvanized coat.Chromed rebars evenlook cool You can also addchrome, between 20 and 100 parts per million, to concrete to obtain the sameprotection. However, all thatprocess somehow kills the idea of galvanized steel for concrete because you really need an experienced guy that knows how to use them withoutcreating problems that weaken the structural bond between steel and concreteessential for reinforced concrete work. That happens even taking in account that ordinary nongalvanized steel rebars can oxidize. The issue with rustin re-bars is that the steel oxides occupy a way larger volume than theoriginal rebar space, creating tension in the concrete, cracking it anexacerbating water intake into steel and thus inducing more rust through thecracks. I have to digress abit and comment that is common to use concrete type V with 5 percent calciumaluminate and/or pozzolanas in very wet or marine environments to protectrebars plus 3 or 4 inches of concrete cover. Because of a couple of articles claiming its chemistryprotect Roman concrete from seawater action, which is true.somehow the popular imaginary has concluded that original Roman pozzolanaconcrete must be extolled as the solution to Western civilization problems. However, allow meto state that ancient concrete is way, way weaker than regular modern concretewith maybe 800 psi in compression compared with 4.000 minimum for modernPortland cement concrete. *** My note- Most engineers in Chennai roughlyremove rust from bars by just putting itdown a few times, ifrust is more. Only if slight rust in bars they use it as it is tellingslight rust gives more grip with concrete. Q9 Whydoes India use 220 volts when the USA uses 110 volts? A9 Balaji Viswanathan, follows governmentpolicies closely.6y Like most things inthe US, the 110V AC is the result of a supercharged political clash and an ugly compromise.[See more: War of Currents] US has always had apair of highly electric innovators who fought to make their creation thestandard [Edison vsTesla, Jobs vs Gates, Wright vs Curtiss, Hearst vs Pulitzer, Colt vsWesson]. Tesla promoted theAlternating Current and he was backed by Westinghouse. Edison promoted theDirect Current and he was the powerhouse behind the company that later becameGE [after kicking out Edison & his name]. Edison delivered power at 110 V as the early use wasprimarily illumination that didn’t require a lot of power. Edisoncreated a number of high pitched drama to prove that Tesla’s AC was dangerous. He got the society really scared of high voltage AC. Eventuallythere was a compromise where the US system adopted the Tesla’s AlternatingCurrent but with Edison’s Voltage [110V]. In the meanwhile, the Germans had little ofthat melodrama and none of the breakneck competition & compromise. With amonopoly over electricity production they objectively chose a much betterstandard, deliveringAlternating Current at the more efficient 220V. The Germanstandard became the European standard and eventually the world standard. Indiafollows the standard just like the rest of the world. In the meanwhile, countries that are connected to the United States [most of the Americas otherthan Brazil] are stuck with Edison’s 110V. Q10 Ifeating white rice daily is unhealthy, how come our Indian ancestors are sohealthy though they used to have it daily 3 times? A10 PM Gowindan Nampoothiri, Former GM, RBI (2001–2008)Thu Contrary to popular belief Rice is not an Indian cereal. It was not the original food of our ancestors . Rice was beingcultivated in China. It was brought to India by a King from Orissa and the grainwas called Orisi.Orisi became popular in Andhra andTamil nadu and it was renamed as Arishi in Tamil When itreached Kerala it became Ari Thetraditional food in North India was Wheat and in the South it was Ragi ,Bajra,Njavara etc In Kerala thetraditional food was Tapioca and fish The ricerevolution replaced traditional food in south The rice containhigh level of carbohydrates, starch and other items which are converted intosugar. There is no fibre content also. The high incidence ofDiabetes in Kerala is probably due rice as main food All the above QA are from Quora website on 07-08- 2022.
