BEING  A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1         Can arefrigerator stop working if it becomes too full?

A1         GopalaKrishnan,Former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom(1966–2004)Just now

Refrigerators will function, supply indicator will beON, but you will feelleast
cooling even after adjusting switch to maximum. Remove thingsfully and close
refrigerator. After 15 minutes check the cooling. If it iscooled, the problem
is loading.

Refrigeratorsshould not be filled more than 70%. The cool air vents
distributing to each shelf shouldnever be closed with things.

The problem is some lady telling another thatrefrigerator should be fully
loaded and others follow. Shops selling cooldrinks and medical shops selling
medicines which are to be refrigerated andkept if one observe, load them only
70%. More than convenience, it is best way of loading

Q2         Similartrain ACs are closed in winter, so why does the railway
charge for it?

A2         IndianRailways Space, Answered by Swagata Sarkar 21h

The railway still has not developed a system toprovide AC to 72 passengers
individually, so even if they gave an option to notopt for AC in winters,
thereis no possible way to “Not Air condition someone personally”.

But jokes aside, the railway charges for the CONSTANTAMBIENT temperature and
air circulation,  not just the AC.

The Things you see mounted on Air Conditioned coachesare not exactly AC, they
are called Roof Mounted Package Units or RMPUs for short. RMPUs areinstalled on
each end of an AC coach and they don't just cool the coach, theyalso
dehumidify, heat, and most importantly, VENTILATE the coach and keepproviding
fresh air. RMPUs are not turned off in winters, more onthat later.

Since the AC coach acts like a closed environment andthere are no open windows,
the exchange of new air is crucial else Carbon dioxide levels canspike. The
RMPU does exactly that.

Both RMPU units of the coach are connected to amicroprocessor-based system that
automatically changes the temperature insidethe coach according to the ambient
temperature via a system of humidity sensorsand thermostats.

In rainyseasons, this system also dehumidifies the coach and in winter this
systemheats the coach and humidifies the air.

If the AC coach does not have a working AC (becauseeveryone did not opt for
AC), the coach will soon fill with the heat all 72passengers are producing and
it will stay trapped inside because there are noopen windows and since the AC
is not working, no fresh air can enter and soonthere will be CO2 spikes and
everyone will pass out (at the very least).

The IndianRailways charge for the comfort AC coaches provide, not to earn extra
money byjust showing it's an AC coach. When it's -2 degrees celsius outside,
the system will constantly keepit 18 degrees celsius inside. If the RMPUs are
turned off as you said, thescenario I told above will happen but now in -2
degrees Celcius. RMPUs arenever turned off regardless of the weather, season,
ticket price, internationalwars, power outages, hunger strikes, or anything in
general. As long as thereare people in an AC coach, the RMPU has to function.

My note- Clearsimple explanation of RMPU. Still when the coach is fully
occupied suffocation is there, some times more. Many passengers go out for
minutes and stand near doors.

Q3         Howhealthy is it to eat uttapam for breakfast?

A3         ShivaShakti Restaurant Thu

The SouthIndian dish uttapam is made using rice flour. It belongs to the
category of fermented foods. It islight, heavy in carbs, and low in fat, and
each bite explodes with a variety offlavors! By using a combination of flours
from different pulses, adding choppedvegetables, or eating it with sambar (a
vegetable stew or broth), you can makeit healthier. It is reasonable to say
that uttapams should be your go-tobreakfast on a busy day and that you can have
them every day. It's time to makeuttapam, so put on your apron and buckle up.

My note- Is itnot wet rice ground?

Q4         Howfast did trains go in the 1870s?

A4         NicholasStone,Life long interest in trains.Fri

The history of trains is a history of the relentlessefforts to increase speed.

In 1804,Richard Trevithick built a steam locomotive that travelled at an
average speed of 3.9 m/h - hauling 11 tonnes ofcoal. A remarkable achievement
when the only means of transport waswalking and horse drawn vehicles.

By time of the legendary October 1829 Rainhill Trials,George Stephenson’sRocket
steam locomotive achieved a speed of 48 km/h. His locomotivewon the trials and
was selected for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway - the world’s
firstintercity train service.

Trains speeds were routinely reaching 100 km/h by the1860s. In 1904, the first
certified 100 mph (160 km/h) steam locomotive speedwas recorded.

The 9 May 1904, City of Truro steam locomotiveachieved 100 mph (160
km/h)descending the Wellington Bank in Somerset on a service from Plymouth
toLondon Paddington. This stretch of track is now limited to 100 mph for
trains. For trains ascending this bank, the speed is often slower.

More was to come when in July 1938, the Mallard steam locomotiveachieved 202
km/h on the UK’s East Coast Mainline - a steamlocomotive record still held
today. As part of French state owned SNCF’s V150project, in April 2007 a TGV
passenger train set the current record of 574.8km/h (357.2 mph).

Mote- From mymemory the steam locomotives in India  had a speed of around
30KM-40 KM per hour in the Madras- Cochin harbor express during 1965’s.  Most
trains in India had steam locomotives.

Q5         Dopeople actually want to live past 60?

A5         GopalkrishnaVishwanath,While others "know" about ageing, I have
experienced it.Still am.Sat

I am 73 and Iam glad I did not die at 60!

If I had stopped living at 60 no one on Quora wouldhave known me. I joined
Quora at the age of 66 and life has not been the samesince then.

If I hadstopped living at 60 I would never have seen my grandson, who is today
9 years and 9 months old. He was herein India last month. He is back in the USA
now and I meet him over WhatsAppseveral times a week and converse with him.

If I had stopped living at 60, I would never have hadthe great pleasure of
welcoming the first Ph.D in my family. My son became aRhodes scholar, moved to
Oxford and got his master’s and doctorate degreesafter I crossed 60. Today I
have the satisfaction of noting that he teaches atCambridge, a place where
thousands of students all over the world completelyfiercely to get admission as
a student.

If I hadstopped living at 60, my startup company would have been in a mess! My
employees would have had no job and they wouldhave been running from pillar to
post to get their salary dues. My clientswould have been in serious trouble due
to unfinished projects. My family wouldhave had a serious head ache on its
hands, closing the company, clearing alldues, and getting a clean balance
sheet. Fortunately I lived beyond 60 and at62, I sold the company, after tying
up all loose ends, to someone betterequipped to run it and expand it and also
take care of all my old loyalemployees.

If I had stopped living at 60, I would never haveknown the pleasures of living
a retired life! Life has been stressful till Iretired.

If had stopped living at 60, I would never havewritten all these stories about
my life experiences.

If I hadstopped living at 60, I would have suffered the agony of leaving my
wife awidow at the age of 55. I have never wanted that to happen. Whoever
leaves first, willleave a serious void in the life of the other. I don’t want
my wife toexperience that void. I would rather she precedes me and I will
bravely put upwith life alone after her departure.

I have nofigure in mind regarding the right time to leave. As long as I am
financiallyable to meet my livingexpenses and as long as I am physically able
to move and not be dependent onothers for even getting up and going to the
bathroom and as long as my mentalfaculties are intact, I would like to live.
The number is not important. I leave that in the hands ofthe Almighty.

Q6         Isthere a bird that never lands?

A6         ClaireJordan, Degree in biology and folklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary onnewspaper18h

Technically, flightless birds such as penguins, ostriches and kakapos never
land, since theynever take off.

There are birds which stay up in the air forincredibly long periods, years
iirc, and only dart down into the sea to grab afish before flying up again. But
all birds have to land to lay and raise their eggs.

Technically I suppose that if only the female raisedthe chicks, and they mated
on the wing, it would be possible for a male bird toremain in the air forever
after its initial takeoff, eating insects on the wingand occasionally grabbing
a fish. But I don’t think any birds *do* mate on the wing, or if they do
theydon’t combine it with long-term soaring. Aside from anything else, staying
aloft long-term and performing the sort of complex manoeuvres requiredto mate
in flight require different shapes of wing.

Q7         Whatis the best RO water filter for home?

A7         GopalaKrishnan,Former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom(1966–2004)Just now

All RO waterfilters are equal in my opinion. Select the suited one by capacity
for home. Carry out properinstallation. Carry out periodic maintenance with
outfail and replace filters and memory unit. Ensure the unit is switched OFF
while not using. It would avoid heating of motor primary coil and prolong the
period of life.

Ensure thewater fed is possible best quality, by periodically cleaning the over
head tank. One cannot improve the quality of municipal watersupply or water
from bore well.

Comparing tothe old open type, covered type with tank for the RO water fitted
is morepreferred. I amhaving both types in my home. In the old type RO water
coming through aflexible pvc small type pipe is manually inserted to a water
cane. In thecovered present ones, there is automatic sensor which stop the
circuit offiltering while the tank is full.

Q8         Whichdistrict Malayalam slang in Kerala has more Tamil influence?

A8         MohammadNabeel TC,Engineer Thu

Malayalam slangin the border areas of Trivandrum district has more Tamil
influence. They call elders as annan not chettan like in otherplaces .But most
people in Trivandrum city and other areas of the district donot speak that
Tamil Influenced slang. Places near Tamil Nadu border like
Neyyattinkara,Parassala etc this slang is widely popular. But they identify
themselves asMalayalis and its only a different slang of Malayalam. Mammootty
usethis slang in the movie Rajamanikyam which has become super hit mainly due
tohis dialogue delivery in this slang.

Whereas,Palakkad and Idukki districts have more Tamil speakers in Kerala.
Butthe difference is they identify themselves as Tamils not as malayalis.
Palakkad Iyers and Rawuther Muslimsspeak Malayalam influenced Tamil. But they
identify themselves asTamils. In Idukki, Tamil speakers are mostly migrants
settled in theplantations areas from the plains of Theni and Dindigul areas.
Munnar is aTamil majority place in Idukki district. They speak pure Tamil though
they livein kerala for generations.

My note- Many goldsmiths in Trivandrum talk fluently Malayalam and Tamil. There
is no slang. But in central Keralathey talk Malayalam influenced Tamil and
named Thattathi Tamil. My home townhas many Raowthers who talk Tamil to
Brahmins even now, though they claim Malayalees.

Q9         Howcan I get rid of lizards at home the natural way?

A9         NSundaram, One who lives to learn and loves to leave Updated Aug 2

Never attempt to get rid of lizards - it’s my sincereadvice. They are the sign
oflife in a new home. They arrive even before we start living.

A natural insect repellent - you need not spend a dimeto get rid of all the
other unwanted insects Particularly cockroaches.

It chases andeats any small insect (that may enter during the rainy season or
when you keep your windowsand doors open for a breeze or for air) found on the
floor or on the wall.

In the last 3decades, I rarely had cockroaches playing in the kitchen or in the
bathroom.

Lizards move sofreely everywhere at the same time I have never seen a lizard on
my dining table or on furniture or evenin the kitchen cabin.

If you thinkthe lizard is very harmful it falls into your dish, yes 100% but it
is also ourduty to keep our surroundings clean and keep all the vessels closed
when not inuse.

Lizards never come for your food but it comes for theinsects that come for your
food, so don’t spill the food.

lizards may fall into your dish only accidentally andif you are careless or
invite other insects to your area of cooking and eating.

I look at lizards as the most human-friendly domesticcreature and the least
harmful.

The onlyinsect I couldn’t get rid of with lizards is the mosquito. Because they
can’tfly and catch.

However, I have seen lizards catching mosquitoes whenthey are sitting/standing
on the floor.

Once the lizard realizes that we won’t do any harm tothem they guard us. Yes,
it’s true. The lizards in our home, stay close to thebedroom door and catch any
insect passing by also I have witnessed the lizardmoving along the corner of
the wall (in our bedroom) without disturbing us atnight to eat the mosquitoes
that target us.

If you don’tworship lizards it doesn’t matter but don’t kill or drive away them
as they arethe only creatures that help us without invitation. For the help,
you need not even feed them or protectthem. They will take care of every need.
They don’t litter your place withtheir feces. Actually, you may rarely find
them and can get rid of them veryeasily.

If you ask me Iwould say don’t live in the house if there is not even one house
lizard. Idon’t think the house is fit enough for dwelling.

Edit:

They are not attractive (it’s not their fault, it’sthe most suitable body
structure to easily navigate on all walls and tiles, andcan even shed the tail
in danger)

They might fallfrom the ceiling on you or on your food directly (It’s because
you have lots ofcobwebs and your ceilings are not cleaned for ages and it is
the best place for the spider toweave webs and catch insects, as lizards love
insects and have to travel onceilings to catch them). They don’t practice any
bungy jumping from theceiling.

You have lotsof dust on the door hinges and it becomes a breeding ground for
some insectsand the lizard goes there to clean up the mess and you crush the
lizard accidentally, that’s anawful sight and a mess to clean up.

It stays thereon the Kitchen platform trying to catch the insects that have
come for yourspilled food particles. After some time You go there to get a cup
of coffee and you see it andscream. It’s not waitingthere to frighten you.

you keep your system or wiring uncleaned for yearsthen the shrewd lizard thinks
“It is unused by humans so I can stay and breed.”What’s wrong? Where else they
can go?

So, mostly it’s our prejudice, fear, and our ownmaking. It’s helpless.

Lizards couldn’t prove themselves or befriend men evenafter cohabiting with him
for hundreds and thousands of years.

One more thing, you find a lizard in almost every house and occupies his place
even before wearrive, it breedsand we can even see little ones moving around
but you cannot see lizardsinfesting and multiplying and driving you away.

At the most 2or 3, you may find in a house, may increase if there are more
dungeons and insects.

It’s a human tendency that we never realize thegoodness of things around us.

My note-Various types of lizards appear now adays in homes. Not only
Geikos,Some are fearsome.
