Bhagavat gita CHAPTER FOUR

*Transcendental Knowledge*

*śrī-bhagavān uvāca imaṁ vivasvate yogaṁ proktavān aham avyayam vivasvān
manave prāha manur ikṣvākave ’bravīt*

The Personality of Godhead, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, said: I instructed this
imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvān, and Vivasvān
instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed
it to Ikṣvāku.

*एवं* *परम्पराप्राप्तमिमं* *राजर्षयो* *विदुः* *।*

*evaṁ paramparā-prāptam imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ sa kāleneha mahatā yogo naṣṭaḥ
paran-tapa*

This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic
succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course
of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is
appears to be lost.

*स* *एवायं* *मया* *तेऽद्य* *योगः* *प्रोक्तः* *पुरातनः* *।*

*sa evāyaṁ mayā te ’dya yogaḥ proktaḥ purātanaḥ bhakto ’si me sakhā ceti
rahasyaṁ hy etad uttamam*

That very ancient science of the relationship with the Supreme ( YOGA) is
today told by Me to you because you are My devotee as well as My friend and
can therefore understand the transcendental mystery of this science.

*TEXT 4:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/4/>Arjuna said: The sun-god
Vivasvān is senior by birth to You. How am I to understand that in the
beginning You instructed this science to him?

*śrī-bhagavān uvāca bahūni me vyatītāni janmāni tava cārjuna tāny ahaṁ veda
sarvāṇi na tvaṁ vettha paran-tapa*

The Personality of Godhead said: Many, many births both you and I have
passed. I can remember all of them, but you cannot, O subduer of the enemy!

In the *Brahma-saṁhitā* (5.33) we have information of many, many
incarnations of the Lord. It is stated there:

*advaitam acyutam anādim ananta-rūpam ādyaṁ purāṇa-puruṣaṁ nava-yauvanaṁ ca
vedeṣu durlabham adurlabham ātma-bhaktau govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ
bhajāmi*

“I worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda [Kṛṣṇa], who is the
original person – absolute, infallible, without beginning. Although
expanded into unlimited forms, He is still the same original, the oldest,
and the person always appearing as a fresh youth. Such eternal, blissful,
all-knowing forms of the Lord are usually not understood by even the best
Vedic scholars, but they are always manifest to pure, unalloyed devotees.”

It is also stated in *Brahma-saṁhitā* (5.39):

*rāmādi-mūrtiṣu kalā-niyamena tiṣṭhan nānāvatāram akarod bhuvaneṣu kintu
kṛṣṇaḥ svayaṁ samabhavat paramaḥ pumān yo govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ
bhajāmi*

“I worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda [Kṛṣṇa], who is
always situated in various incarnations such as Rāma, Nṛsiṁha and many
subincarnations as well, but who is the original Personality of Godhead
known as Kṛṣṇa, and who incarnates personally also.”

In the *Vedas* also it is said that the Lord, although one without a
second, manifests Himself in innumerable forms. He is like the
*vaidūrya* stone,
which changes color yet still remains one. All those multiforms are
understood by the pure, unalloyed devotees, but not by a simple study of
the *Vedas* (*vedeṣu durlabham adurlabham ātma-bhaktau*). Devotees like
Arjuna are constant companions of the Lord, and whenever the Lord
incarnates, the associate devotees also incarnate in order to serve the
Lord in different capacities. Arjuna is one of these devotees, and in this
verse it is understood that some millions of years ago when Lord Kṛṣṇa
spoke the *Bhagavad-gītā* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/> to the
sun-god Vivasvān, Arjuna, in a different capacity, was also present. But
the difference between the Lord and Arjuna is that the Lord remembered the
incident whereas Arjuna could not remember. That is the difference between
the part-and-parcel living entity and the Supreme Lord. Although Arjuna is
addressed herein as the mighty hero who could subdue the enemies, he is
unable to recall what had happened in his various past births. Therefore, a
living entity, however great he may be in the material estimation, can
never equal the Supreme Lord. Anyone who is a constant companion of the
Lord is certainly a liberated person, but he cannot be equal to the Lord.
The Lord is described in the *Brahma-saṁhitā* as infallible (*acyuta*),
which means that He never forgets Himself, even though He is in material
contact. Therefore, the Lord and the living entity can never be equal in
all respects, even if the living entity is as liberated as Arjuna. Although
Arjuna is a devotee of the Lord, he sometimes forgets the nature of the
Lord, but by the divine grace a devotee can at once understand the
infallible condition of the Lord, whereas a nondevotee or a demon cannot
understand this transcendental nature. Consequently these descriptions in
the *Gītā* cannot be understood by demonic brains. Kṛṣṇa remembered acts
which were performed by Him millions of years before, but Arjuna could not,
despite the fact that both Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna are eternal in nature. We may
also note herein that a living entity forgets everything due to his change
of body, but the Lord remembers because He does not change His
*sac-cid-ānanda* body. He is *advaita,* which means there is no distinction
between His body and Himself. Everything in relation to Him is spirit –
whereas the conditioned soul is different from his material body. And
because the Lord’s body and self are identical, His position is always
different from that of the ordinary living entity, even when He descends to
the material platform. The demons cannot adjust themselves to this
transcendental nature of the Lord, which the Lord Himself explains in the
following verse

*अजोऽपि* *सन्नव्ययात्मा* *भूतानामीश्वरोऽपि* *सन्* *।*
*प्रकृतिं* *स्वामधिष्ठाय* *सम्भवाम्यात्ममायया* *॥* *६* *॥*

*ajo ’pi sann avyayātmā*

* (Brahmam) bhūtānām īśvaro ’pi san ( Pancha bhuta birth are
specie)prakṛtiṁ svām adhiṣṭhāya sambhavāmy ātma-māyayā*

Although I am unborn and My transcendental body never deteriorates, and
although I am the Lord of all living entities, I still appear in every
millennium in My original transcendental form.

*TEXT 7:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/7/>Whenever and wherever
there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a
predominant rise of irreligion – at that time I descend Myself.

To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to
reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after
millennium.

One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities
does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material
world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.

HOW ONE IS NOT REBORN? IN THE FIRST 2 LINES THE FORMULA:
*janma karma ca me divyam evaṁ yo vetti tattvataḥ*

ONE WHO UNDERSTAND THE JANAM AND KARMA (VETTI FROM VEDA; IN 4 8 he SAYS
UNDERSTANDING OF THE GOD IS VEDA AND THAT OF HUMAN IS VETTI, TRYING DESIRE
TO UNDERSTAND HENCE BRAHMA SUTRAM OPENS AS :ATHTHO BRAHMA GIGNASA)//
JAYATHE ITI JANMA , SO AJAYATHE IS THERE IS NO JANMA AT ALL; KAMYA KARMA
ADDS DETAILS OF KARMA WHEREAS NISHKAMYA KARMA DOES NOT ADD TO THE kartha;
it is added to nirjanma purusha; so knowledge of janam and karma is bg and
thus he can remember all but HE cannot) =KR

* man-mayā mām upāśritāḥ bahavo jñāna-tapasā pūtā mad-bhāvam āgatāḥ*

Being freed from attachment, fear and anger, being fully absorbed in Me and
taking refuge in Me, many, many persons in the past became purified by
knowledge of Me – and thus they all attained transcendental love for Me.

*TEXT 11:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/11/>ये यथा मां प्रपद्यन्ते

*ye yathā māṁ prapadyante tāṁs tathaiva bhajāmy aham mama vartmānuvartante

As all surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly. Everyone follows My
path in all respects, O son of Pṛthā.

{ KR Surrender is misunderstood by many including in the vaishavism; it
is not in action of the prostration; it is not in the act of uttering HIS
name and telling all because of you; it is not throwing or casting away the
desire; IT IS THE CONTROL OF THE MIND; MIND MADE TO LISTEN TO YOUR HEART
MANAS ; remaining in the world like a log unmindful of what is happenning
to your body; but remaing in devotion to HIM whatevber may happen to the
body; in totality unaware of the action being performed, yet actoing
roghteously all the time; Krishna in the B G says that : HE need not do
anything; yet he is driving; and assiting arjuna though he is the greatest;
and he is doing it as nonchalant knowing fully well the future; that kind
of mind is need and that is the total surrender. )}

*TEXT 12:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/12/>काङ्क्षन्तः कर्मणां

*kāṅkṣantaḥ karmaṇāṁ siddhiṁ yajanta iha devatāḥ kṣipraṁ hi mānuṣe loke

Men in this world desire success in fruitive activities, and therefore they
worship the demigods. Quickly, of course, men get results from fruitive
work in this world.

Therefore action of desire shall be fulfilled here and the reactions
unasked for, has to be endured also which demi god cannot consider at its
limited powers.WILL SHALL PREVAIL ACCVORDING TO THER EQUIVALENT KARMA
PALANS; YET WILL SHALL LEAD TO THE UNKNOWN ILL ALSO WHICH IS THE KAMAYA
KARMA PALAN SHOULDERED ON THE SELF. KR

*TEXT 13:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/13/>चातुर्वर्ण्यं मया सृष्टं

तस्य कर्तारमपि मां विद्ध्यकर्तारमव्ययम् ॥ १३ ॥

*cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ tasya kartāram api māṁ
viddhy akartāram avyayam*

According to the three modes of material nature and the work associated
with them, the four divisions of human society are created by Me. And
although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the
nondoer, being unchangeable.

KR The word used is SRISHTI CREATION WHICH WILL HAVE THE end ALSO; THE
COMPOUNDED PRODUCTD HAD ARISEN FROM, TRI GUNAS SATVA, RAJASA THAMASA ACTION
WILL HAVE THE REACTIONS; GUNAS ON ACCOUNT OF KARMA THE ACTION IS “GUNA
KARMA “; THE REACTIOJNS OF THE GUNAS ON ACCOUNT OF THE MULTIPLICITY OF THE
characters on this vast earth; by dharma if one acts good karma is the
outcome and that too when transferred to Brahmam as “NA MAMA” then the
absence of ant guna karma will lead one to mukthi ; this can be done in the
karma yoga orgnana yoga or sankya yoga or even sanyasa yoga. Those status
id the convenience aided by the past karmas. WILL-POWER is also given to
use the GUNA-KARMA; and the ressults are desired positive as aspired, then
the will powered results may trigger the reactions which shall also be
faced only by the doer, as HE OWNED THE ACTIONS AND ITS RESULTS. Thus the
karma account is opened. And accumulated; and reacted; and the cycle goes
on; so guna-karma has the results of karma-gunas as will power was used. In
the former action and in the latter action HE has nothing to do; as HE is
not doing it, HE has no p-ower to change it also; Karma reactions are
karmic to endure , Good or bad; Janma and Karma follows. Brahmam is beyond
that or if there is any one like that that is the brahmam. AND BY AHAM
BRTAHMASMI THE VEDAS SAY EVEN YOU CAN BECOME THE ONENESS BRAHMAM TO STAY
ABOVE ALL; so the existence oddf the Brahmam is proved.

*TEXT 14:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/14/>( Brahmam is): There
is no work that affects Me; nor do I aspire for the fruits of action. One
who understands this truth about Me also does not become entangled in the
fruitive reactions of work.

*TEXT 15:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/15/> ( so to become
Brahamam you have to): All the liberated souls in ancient times acted with
this understanding of My transcendental nature. Therefore you should
perform your duty, following in their footsteps.

*TEXT 16:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/16/> ( it is not that easy
as ) : Even the intelligent are bewildered in determining what is action
and what is inaction. Now I shall explain to you what action is, knowing
which you shall be liberated from all misfortune.

*TEXT 17:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/17/>The intricacies of
action are very hard to understand. Therefore one should know properly what
action is, what forbidden action is and what inaction is.

*TEXT 18:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/18/> ( the words)
कर्मण्यकर्म यः पश्येदकर्मणि च कर्म यः ।
स बुद्धिमान्मनुष्येषु स युक्तः कृत्स्नकर्मकृत् ॥ १८ ॥

*karmaṇy akarma yaḥ paśyed akarmaṇi ca karma yaḥ sa buddhimān manuṣyeṣu sa
yuktaḥ kṛtsna-karma-kṛt*

One who sees inaction in action and action in inaction is intelligent among
men, and he is in the transcendental position, although engaged in all
sorts of activities.

KR The palay of the word “KRU” to do is significant: KARMANNI AKARMA A
PASID= IN ALL ACTIONS OF ONE IS FORCED TO DO , IF THAT PERSON ACTS
DHARMICALLY WITHOUT KAMYA OR THE DESIRE FOR SELF RESULTS; {INACTION IN THE
ACTION}; SIMILARLY IN THE INACTION (VIZ ACTED BUT WITHOUT DESIRE AS AKARMA
THAT IS THAT IN THAT INACTION, DID NOT EXPECT ANY SELF DESIRED RESULTS BUT
TRTANSFERRED ALL TO THE BRAAHMAM WITHOUT OWNINGH THE RESULT= ACTION IN THE
IN THE INACTION) =THOSE ALONE ARE CONSIDERED AS INTELLIGENT BUDDIMAN.
BECAUSE THEY ALONE KNEW THE IDEA THE YUKTI OF , 1 ACTION (KRIT); INACTION (
NAKRI= FORBIDDEN ACTION ( ONE MORE IN BETWEEN) AND INACTION (MAKRIT). So
we have to become first intelligent;

Now a debate going on as to whether Tirukkural followed only Vedas or
not ; here is one exampoe of it is; Tirukkural says:

    *குறள்* *466 **தெரிந்துசெயல்வகை*
<https://thirukkural.io/47/therinthu-seyalvagai/>

*செய்தக்க* *அல்ல* *செயக்கெடும்* *செய்தக்க*
*செய்யாமை* *யானுங்* *கெடும்*

*seithakka alla seyakkedum seithakka seiyaamai yaanung kedum*

*action not to be done will become negative resulted as well as action that
is not done will also result in negative. Veda wirds in BG as action,
inaction and forbidden action alone determine the dharma which is shown in
the one division of the prushartha divisions made by the Tiruvalluvar as
Poruladukaram. *

* Therefore the wise knew that which again was writtyen in the tirukkural
also *

*குறள்** 421*

*TEXT 19:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/19/>(SO) One is understood
to be in full knowledge whose every endeavor is devoid of desire for sense
gratification. He is said by sages to be a worker for whom the reactions of
work have been burned up by the fire of perfect knowledge.

*TEXT 20:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/20/> (SO) Abandoning all
attachment to the results of his activities, ever satisfied and
independent, he performs no fruitive action, although engaged in all kinds
of undertakings.

*TEXT 21:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/21/> (HOW ) Such a man of
understanding acts with mind and intelligence perfectly controlled, gives
up all sense of proprietorship over his possessions and acts only for the
bare necessities of life. Thus working, he is not affected by sinful
reactions.

*TEXT 22:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/22/> (THUS) He who is
satisfied with gain which comes of its own accord, who is free from duality and
does not envy, who is steady in both success and failure, is never
entangled, although performing actions.

*TEXT 23:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/23/>(conclusion):The work
of a man who is unattached to the modes of material nature and who is fully
situated in transcendental knowledge merges entirely into transcendence.

*TEXT 24:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/24/> (sserted): A person
who is fully absorbed in Kṛṣṇa consciousness is sure to attain the
spiritual kingdom because of his full contribution to spiritual activities,
in which the consummation is absolute and that which is offered is of the
same spiritual nature.

*TEXT 25:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/25/> ( GUNA-KARMA-VIBAGIS
ARE AS UNDER )Some yogīs perfectly worship the demigods by offering
different sacrifices to them, and some offer sacrifices in the fire of the
Supreme Brahman.

*TEXT 26:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/26/>Some [the unadulterated
brahmacārīs] sacrifice the hearing process and the senses in the fire of
mental control, and others [the regulated householders] sacrifice the
objects of the senses in the fire of the senses.

*TEXT 27:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/27/>Others, who are
interested in achieving self-realization through control of the mind and
senses, offer the functions of all the senses, and of the life breath, as
oblations into the fire of the controlled mind.

*TEXT 28:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/28/>Having accepted strict
vows, some become enlightened by sacrificing their possessions, and others
by performing severe austerities, by practicing the yoga of eightfold
mysticism, or by studying the Vedas to advance in transcendental knowledge.

*TEXT 29:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/29/>Still others, who are
inclined to the process of breath restraint to remain in trance, practice
by offering the movement of the outgoing breath into the incoming, and the
incoming breath into the outgoing, and thus at last remain in trance,
stopping all breathing. Others, curtailing the eating process, offer the
outgoing breath into itself as a sacrifice.

*TEXT 30:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/30/>All these performers
who know the meaning of sacrifice become cleansed of sinful reactions, and,
having tasted the nectar of the results of sacrifices, they advance toward
the supreme eternal atmosphere.

*TEXT 31:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/31/> ( so understand) O
best of the Kuru dynasty, without sacrifice one can never live happily on
this planet or in this life: what then of the next?

*TEXT 32:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/32/> ( VEDAS ACCEPT ALL
TYPES OF WORKS SCHEDULED IN THERE AS THE WAY OF LIFE AS NARRATED ABOVE
WHICH ALONE WAS CREATED AS ACTION ACCVORDING TO guna=KULATHALAVE AGUMAM
GUNAM) All these different types of sacrifice are approved by the Vedas,
and all of them are born of different types of work. Knowing them as such,
you will become liberated.

*TEXT 33:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/33/> ( HENCE SPENDING MONEY
IS NOT GOOD BUT KNOWING AS TO DO IS; JUST NOT WORK MECHANICALLY BUT
EFFECTIVE WORK ; MANAGEMENT CALLS IT AS…) ( O chastiser of the enemy, the
sacrifice performed in knowledge is better than the mere sacrifice of
material possessions. After all, O son of Pṛthā, all sacrifices of work
culminate in transcendental knowledge.

*TEXT 34:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/34/> ( Karkka kasadara
learn well before jumping into the pool) Just try to learn the truth by
approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render
service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you
because they have seen the truth.

*TEXT 35:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/35/> (half begun well is
well begun to complete) Having obtained real knowledge from a self-realized
soul, you will never fall again into such illusion, for by this knowledge
you will see that all living beings are but part of the Supreme, or, in
other words, that they are Mine.

*TEXT 36:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/36/>( this is what later
Lord says “ sarva papebyo moksham ishyami meaning that even a sinner can
start and it shall be the way and such papis are aalone absorbed and not
sinner till 28th aug and prostrating on 29th aug to be absorbed as
christianity says ) { Regret shall change the man and had to undergo the
same knowledge to attain HIM} Even if you are considered to be the most
sinful of all sinners, when you are situated in the boat of transcendental
knowledge you will be able to cross over the ocean of miseries.

*TEXT 37:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/37/>( all sins if
extignguished with the fire of knowledge then) As a blazing fire turns
firewood to ashes, O Arjuna, so does the fire of knowledge burn to ashes
all reactions to material activities.

*TEXT 38:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/38/> (SO) In this world,
there is nothing so sublime and pure as transcendental knowledge. Such
knowledge is the mature fruit of all mysticism. And one who has become
accomplished in the practice of devotional service enjoys this knowledge
within himself in due course of time.

*TEXT 39:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/39/> (hence) A faithful man
who is dedicated to transcendental knowledge and who subdues his senses is
eligible to achieve such knowledge, and having achieved it he quickly
attains the supreme spiritual peace.

*TEXT 40:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/40/> (BUT) But ignorant and
faithless persons who doubt the revealed scriptures do not attain God
consciousness; they fall down. For the doubting soul there is happiness
neither in this world nor in the next.

*TEXT 41:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/41/>( summary)One who acts
in devotional service, renouncing the fruits of his actions, and whose
doubts have been destroyed by transcendental knowledge, is situated
factually in the self. Thus he is not bound by the reactions of work, O
conqueror of riches.

*TEXT 42:* <https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/4/42/> ( clearing the doubts
of anyone as answers) Therefore the doubts which have arisen in your heart
out of ignorance should be slashed by the weapon of knowledge. Armed with
yoga, O Bhārata, stand and fight.
