BEING  ACOMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1            Why are most restaurants in TamilNadu pure vegetarian while it
has a large non-vegetarian population?

A1            Anbazhagan Ambrose, Lives inChennai, Tamil Nadu, India1y

Elementary my dear Watsonelementary.

No. of meals perweek = 21

No. of vegetarianmeals eaten by a vegetarian = 21

No. of vegetarianmeals eaten by an average non-vegetarian = 15–16

In other words, if a non-vegetarian tosses a coin, 3 outof 4 times he will be
opting for vegetarian food. Reasons:

Non vegetarian food is expensive.    Even a hardcorenon vegetarian person like
me cannot eat non veg more than 10 times a week andthat is very uncommon.

Our non vegetarianfood is very rich doused with lots of oil and that cannot be
eaten for everymeal.

The breakfast and dinner crowd is the main crowdin restaurants. Very few non
vegetarians eat non veg food for breakfast, thattoo only rarely. Many people
also avoid non veg food for dinner.

So it basically comes down to economics. Havingequal number of non veg
restaurants will not be good for the business because footfall will be very
very less.

This whole non vegrestaurant thing is rather new in Chennai. Back in 1980s
“military” hotels were even fewer in numbercompared to the present condition.

Those days going to non veg restaurant wasreserved only for special occasions
because broiler chicken has not yet made its grand entry andmutton was
expensive.

And no nonvegetarian Chennaite with self-respect will eat sea food in a
restaurant whenpaati can make magical sea food.

Q3            What are some good food habits forlunch?

A3            Tanisha Chaudhary, Software EngineerSat

Always includesalad in your lunch as it is nutritious.

Include a dairyproduct like yogurt or buttermilk.

Don’tdrink water after the lunch as it will slow down the digestion process.

Eat a protein richsource like pulses and carbohydrate rich source like rice.

After lunch if you wantto eat some dessert then go for fennel and sugar.

My note-Most drink water in between meals and after finishing meals while
eatingfruits. Most get satisfaction of food after eating fruit after meals.

Q4            How can you test if a ceiling fanworks before you hang it?

A4            Tim Hofstetter, Was a contractor forseveral years.5y

Remove the bladesand their brackets. Wire to a power cord. Invert the motor or
hold it with yourhand while someone plugs in the power cord. If the motor’s
body turnsappropriately at every speed setting, then the fan works. Disconnect,
install,and remount the blades.

My note- It is tedious work. Most technicians firstinstall fan, and if not
working, remove it and  do the above procedure  and if motor is faulty, rewind
the same.

Q6            If the Biharis are intelligent andhard-working, why is Bihar a
poor and backward state?

A6            Balaji Viswanathan, followsgovernment policies closely.4y

Bihar is lost in time and was let to sink for centuries- both under British
rule and during most of the Republic. The region whose cities dazzled the world
had its lights turn off. Pataliputra’sgrandeur would amaze the Greeks who
visited there. It is a shadow of its past. Gaya enlighted theSiddharta and
turned him into a Buddha. It doesn’t now have much more thanpilgrims offering
puja. Nalandaused to attract scholars across the world and was the Harvard of
its time. Now, not a singlecollege/university in Bihar attracts other Indians,
leave alone the world.

What Bihar firstneeds is a major metropolis. If you take out Mumbai from
Maharashtra, Bangalore from Karnataka andChennai from Tamil Nadu, those states
would not be significantly ahead ofBihar.

These greatmetropolises make a great difference to their states - educating a
lot of youngpeople, providing them jobs and filling up government’s coffers. In
the absence of a major city,Bihar’s government cannot provide much to its
people.

People getkidnapped in a large numbers and are forced to marry, pay ransom etc.
As longas those are not stopped, corporations won’t enter.

Bihar should really work on building a world class citythat has great
infrastructure and a strong security. That’s the simple formula in which the
Bihar government should put most of itsenergy on.

EDIT: People ask why is the major city important. Ifyou take out Mumbai,
wouldn’t Maharashtra survive? They might survive but notin the same way. Mumbai
is the biggest tax earner whose revenues are thendistributed to the rest of the
state in the form of farm subsidies, schools, roads, hospitals etc. If Mumbai
vanishes for some reason, the government has tocut down a sizable portion of
the spending and that would in a few generationscompletely destroy the
socioeconomic progress. The rest of the cities - Pune, Nagpur, Nashik would
thenbe flooded by migrants, destroying the infrastructure and social fabric of
thosecities.

That is what happened to Bihar and UP. Their majorcities and tax earners
decayed under centuries of neglect during colonial era. While the English
focused on the coasts from where they could trade, theydidn’t build or restore
any city away from the coasts.

Again, you can takethe example of Kerala. The state has a long coast line that
is parallel to aroad, a railway line and a mountain range. Nobody could have
designed such aperfect transportation option that connects all the population
through a singleroad or railway line. Water and food are in abundance. And so
are touristlocations. Sea is calm without the threat of Tsunamis or major
floods. Noearthquakes, volcanoes or famines either. Trade winds brought traders
aroundthe world to its shores. Rulers have been quite good and the ghat
shelteredthem from the chaos that went out side.

Despite allthese advantages, in the absence of a major metropolis to provide
jobs,Keralites are all over the Middle East and rest of India. For the same
reasonwhen there was a major famine in 1870s, Tamils went out in large numbers
toSingapore, Sri Lanka, Palakkad and Malaysia. No happy population migrate
inlarge numbers.

Cities areimportant. Stateswithout great cities lag behind in economic power.

My note- Inrespect of Tamilnadu,  Coimbatore and Madurai are greatcities. In
respect of Kerala Cochi-Ernakulam is the biggest city. Trivandrum, just a
capital only.

Q7           Whatare the consequences of overfilling a washing machine with
clothes anddetergent?

A7            Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

When clothesare overfilled it is strain to motor. If the overfilling is about
10%, somehow, the motor would try to run the drum. Machine would movefrom it’s
position. If the machine is old, even breaking of drum cannot beruled out.

If detergent ismore, every possibility of clothes even after washing may have
detergent onclothes causing itching on the body of the wearer. Remedy isagain
wash the clothes without adding detergent.

In top loading washing machine it is possible to take outclothes without
straining. Also in semi automaticmachines it is possible to remove clothes.

In fully automatic front load machines, sometimes itis possible to remove
clothes after switching OFF, and waiting for some time,to open the door.
Detergent added water will fall downin the floor while removing the excess
clothes and every possibility ofslipping. Sometimes frequently switching ON and
OFF, the door may openin front load washing machine.
