Q1         Do any animals other than cheetahs runfaster than human beings? What
about birds and fish?

A1         Alex Cooper,Animal enthusiast20h

Yes, plenty ofanimals run faster than human beings. As a wise pig once said:

“Four legs good, two legs bad.”[1]

I believe the pronghorn is thesecond-fastest land animal, at around 60 mph (97
km/h) top speed. Variousantelopes, equines, big cats, canines, even camels are
much faster than us, at least over shortdistances.

Rhinos are much faster than us; hippos would outpace anaverage person;
elephants, who can’t even “run”,can hit 25 mph (40 km/h) with that fast walk
thing you do when a car lets youcross the road.

As for birds and fish?

Most birds don’t have to run since they’ve evolved thesehandy things called
wings. That being said, there are a few species that arepretty nifty in a
footrace.

Ostriches, for example, are the fastest animal on two legs, reaching 43 mph (69
km/h) top speed and a cruising speed of over 30 mph (50km/h). Their ratite
relative the emu can also rattle along at 30 mph.[2]

The greaterroadrunner can apparently hit 26 mph (42 km/h), on par with the
fastest humansprinters and comfortably faster than used-to-be-sort-of-athletic
onlinewriters, albeit much slower than coyotes, wily or otherwise.

As for fish? Idon’t think they’re very good at running at all…..

Q2         What does a fan or blower do on an airconditioner unit?

A2         Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

I am answering fromChennai, India. Here air conditioner is used for getting
cooling air. There is a fan smaller in size whichblows cool air inside. There
is another fan in theoutdoor unit, which cools the compressor. Unless this
large fanwork, compressor may get hot, and AC will not provide cool air.

AC technicians oncomplaint of AC not working first check with tong tester input
current and after switching ONcheck whether outdoor unit is working and fan is
working, beforechecking any other parts

Q3         What are a few unknown facts aboutChennai that are hard to believe?

A3         Tirupati Rao, Lives in Chennai, TamilNadu, India6y

Snowfallhappened at Chennai .

Yes. You hear itright, 200 years ago, Chennai recorded a negative temperature.
Read below.

It's hard to imagine yesteryear's Madras being cold andfreezing. A city known
for its sweltering heat in thepeak of summers was once home to temperatures
that hovered around 11 degreeCelsius - interspersed with cold winds and the
occasional snowfall.

Yes, 200 years ago,Madras told a very different story. The last week ofApril
1815 saw temperatures dipping below the freezing point. A city that nowknows
only three seasons - "hot, hotter and hell" - once also knewwhat it felt like
to blow winter smoke in the dead of the night.

According to areport by The Hindu, thevolcanic eruption of Mount Tambora in
Indonesia was the reasonbehind Madras's chilly weather. The disaster spewed
lava with such ferocitythat it claimed the lives of 12,000 people and was heard
2,000 km away.

Tambora: TheEruption That Changed The World, by Gillen D’Arcy Wood describes
thephenomenon:

"Tambora’s dust veil, serene and massive above theclouds, began its westward
drift aloft the winds of the upper atmosphere. Its airy passage to India outran
the thousands of waterborne vessels below bentupon an identical course,
breasting the trade winds from the resource-rich EastIndies to the commercial
ports of the Indian Ocean. The vanguard of Tambora’sstratospheric plume arrived
over the Bay of Bengal within days."

Wiki.

Madras felt theblow two weeks later which resulted in its temperature
fluctuations. The temperature dipped below thefreezing point, "thanks to the
aerosols in the volcanic cloud absorbingheat from the sun and the earth."

Strange phenomenonoccurred with pumice stones washing up to the shores but
noteven a single incident was recorded during the rule of the East India
Company.Neither did anyone mention a tsunami warning.

The aftermath was, however, far from "pleasant". The ash cloud spread itscover
across the world, making the year of 1816 one "without summer".In India, it was
a year with monsoon where crops failed and plagues wreakedhavoc.

Madras had a richhistory no one really knew about till now. Although nobody
chronicled it inwritten history, it's still definitely one worth remembering.

Q4         Why do Malayalis choose nursing as thefirst preference in profession?

A4         Tiny Nair, Cardiologist at PRSHospital, Trivandrum1y

Welcome to our Home.

Stand anywhere onthe east coast of Africa or the Arab peninsula and blindly
throw a dart;chances are, you would hit a breath-taking length of land with no
breadthcalled ‘Kerala’.

After spending alot of time in troubled waters; finally, Vasco da Gama and his
team reachedMombasa (Kenya). They stumbled upon a Guajarati man, who claimed to
know thesea routes to India, and convinced Vasco da Gama to head straight for
Calicut; notMumbai. The man was quickly hired and after a 23-day bumpy ride,
they sightedthe Ghat mountains and arrived at Calicut on May 20.

It was 1498.

My Bengali momfell flat in love under the charm of my Malayali dad; they
eventually gotmarried and boarded a train to a place called ‘Kerala’; that took
a 5-nighttrain journey to reach Kerala. Coming from the so-calledprogressive
Bengal; my mother was taken aback by the reception offered to theunannounced
entry of an unknown bride in a big family, speaking alien language.

In no time she wasaccepted as a member of the household enjoying hot ‘Kapi’ in
steel tumblers andhotter pickles, licked straight off the finger.

Accepting aliens seems to be in the DNA of the Malayalis.

A state whichembraced whoever came in – From Jews in 1st century, Arab traders
by 8thcentury, Hindu Kings by 12th , Portuguese by 15th and my Bengali mom in
1955;all with equal enthusiasm. A harmonious mixture of religion; despite
ourpoliticians trying their best to unsettle.

Malayali women arenot socially inhibited like the rest of India.

Unusual Monarch

A unusual Monarchwho issued a decree in 1817 that ‘All education should be free
and cost borneby the state to enlighten people’. The royal family started a
‘Women's college’ inTrivandrum 1864; when no one believed that there was a
valid reason or a goodlogic to educate women; a time when the rest of India was
cautiouslydebating the law brought about by social reformer ‘Raja Ram Mohan
Roy’ to stopbride burning (custom of ‘Sati’).

No surprise thattoday the state boasts of the highest female literacy rate.

Too Crowded

Kerala is a verycrowded place with 860 people /sq Km (compared to Indian
average of 382 /Sq Km; US 35 / Sq KM andCanada 4/ Sq Km) there is very little
standing space here especially if youhave a fairly good educational
qualification. So,with their lungi tucked half-mast, boat-loads of malayalis’
travelled to Dubaiand plane loads to US and Europe far before people from other
states could holdthe world map correctly. Remember, there is hardly any
industry orinfrastructure in Kerala other than those provided by nature.

Ready to travel inview of lack of infrastructure and jobs.

Women Rule

Kerala is one ofthose few places where for 1000 men there are 1084 women. For
reference Indianfigure is 1000 : 940.

So males areoutnumbered.

The elderly gentleman recovered from a major Heartattack, but still weak.

Just for a small talk, I asked him ‘what do your childrendo?’

His eyes lit up- ‘Sir my son is in Indian Army and mydaughter is a nurse in
Mumbai’

I could feel pridefilling his emphysematous lungs.

Years before an average Indian considered nursing arespectable profession,
Malayali nurses were packing their bags travelling allover the globe.Social
acceptance and respectability of Nursing as a profession.

Exposed to multipleforeign cultures, the educated, empowered women of Kerala,
quickly leave thecrowded home turf and set sail to all international
destinations. From warring Syria to peacefulSweden and everywhere in-betweenThe
result?

FromKashmir to Kanyakumari; from Texas to Trivandrum patients wake up to find
theirsmiling face and feel the comforting hands of a Malayali nurse.

Q5         Do health supplements actually helpyou?

A5         Orlando Blas Aday Aday,FreelanceTranslator Proofreading
English-Spanish at Freelancing (2016–present)Sep 21

Vitamins and minerals are necessary for your body todevelop and function
properly. While most peopleget everything they need by eating well, others
require a little extra help. That's where supplements come in, giving your body
the help it needs to stayhealthy.

There's a reasonsupplements are so popular: they can help. There is evidence
that, in additionto a healthy diet, some supplements can benefit your overall
well-being withlittle to no risk.

The following are some common supplements that may bebeneficial to your health:

Vitamin B12, whichcan aid in the health of nerve and blood cells, the
production of DNA, and theprevention of anemia.

When pregnant womentake folic acid, it can help to reduce birth defects.

Vitamin D, whichhas the ability to strengthen bones

Calcium is amineral that can help with bone health.

Vitamins C and Ecan help prevent cell damage.

Fish oil can helpwith heart health.

Vitamin A, whichcan help to slow vision loss caused by age-related macular
degeneration.

Zinc, which canimprove skin health and slow vision loss due to age-related
maculardegeneration.

My note-Appollo Pharmacy has recently  introducedDiabetic powder. I am using it
for the last four months. Really it gives anenergy boost in the morning.
Diabetics can make a  try. No waycanvassing

Q6         What will happen to all the electricvehicles once their batteries
have expired?

A6         Steve Baker, Senior Software Engineer(2013–present)Mon

Car batteries from recently made Teslas are expected tolast close to a million
miles - and with an average person driving 15,000 milesper year that’s 67 years
of driving. The electricmotors in all Teslas (including older ones) are also
good for a million miles.(That number is justified because industrial electric
motors of this kind ofsize can be expected to run for similar amounts of time.)

If someonewere lucky enough to be given a brand new new Tesla when when they
learned todrive at age 18 - that car would likely still be running just fine
when theygave up driving at age 85.

Of course over thatimmense amount of time, it’s likely to need suspension
repairs, that kind ofthing. But the expensive bits - the battery pack, the
motors and most of theelectronics should still be working out to a million
miles.

Crash damage is oneof the things that frequently sends conventional cars to an
early grave - butwith Telsa’s active crash avoidance AI, crashes are MUCH less
likely - about 12times less likely than with a gasoline car.

At a million miles, both the battery pack and theelectric motors would be about
ready to die - andnobody really knows which is most likely to die first because
there are noTesla’s which are old enough to have more than about 700,000 on the
odometeryet.

Older Tesla’s havebattery packs that seem to be lasting about 600,000 miles
which is only 40years of driving. So buy a car at age 18 and you’ll need a new
one at age 58…oryou could splurge $10,000 and replace the battery pack so it
would last thewhole million miles. Honestly though - a 40 year old car is
probably due to goto the car crusher.

Anyway - in either case - you eventually have a dead carthat’s not worth fixing.

So the batterypack goes back to Tesla (who’ll pay $200 for it as an incentive
to recycle it)- and it’ll be recycled in their GigaNevada battery plant. Almost
every partof the battery pack goes into the manufacture of new batteries -
except for thefireproofing/insulating plastic which is shredded and sold for
the manufactureof flooring for childrens playgrounds. Even the water inside
thebattery is purified and used in production. Since the batteries are designed
tobe easy to recycle - that’s actually not too hard.

The recyclingcenter is situated right next to the battery production line - so
thecomponents of the old battery travel maybe 50 feet before they are turned
intonew batteries.

The remainder of the car is presumably handled the sameway as a gasoline car -
going to a recycling center - where any useful partsare removed and sold for
spares andthe body shell goes into the car crusher and is recycled that way.
Nothingspecial going on here.

Q7         Which type of food is provided byairlines in flights? Is it
pre-booked?

A7         Shaunak Bhattacharjeee,SoftwareEngineer | Traveller | FoodieFri

It depends on the airlines and the duration of yourflight. Airlines like
Indigo, Go Air, Spice Jet don't provide complimentarymeals; you need to
purchase your meals on board.Usually, finger food like sandwiches, upma,
peanuts, cup noodles are availablefor purchase and are priced quite highly.

On flights like AirIndia, it depends on the duration of the flight. Before
Covid times, the food served on shortflights was decent but now, all you get
are two vegetable sandwiches. But on longer flights whichare more than 1.5
hours, you get a proper meal with a staple and a side dish.If you're lucky,
you'll get both rice and flat bread options like parantha. There's a sweet dish
and either a bread item or curd along with tea and coffee.

On businessclass, you get more food with unlimited servings. I flew one short
distanceflight from Srinagar to New Delhi recently in business class.

For comparison, while flying from Delhi to Srinagar, we got two vegetable
sandwiches in theEconomy class and on the return flight, we got a chicken
sandwich with aminiature jar of tomato ketchup and pudina chutney, a generous
slice of fruitcake and chicken tikka with green salad along with the beverages.
You can guess what could beserved on long-haul flights!

Q8         What causes the electrical outlet toget warm or hot after plugging
in a device for some time?

A8         Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

Simple answer- Noplug and socket connection has zero ohms. Not 100%
perfectconnection. Hence slight warming when higher current consuming
instruments areconnected. Ifleast current consuming items are connected
warmness will be very less.

Q9         Why does boiled water taste badcompared to water before it was
boiled?

A9         info-Search, Answered by,WilliamAlexander ,Sun

Boiled waterusually has an unpleasant taste, therefore, it is usually
recommended that itbe aerated before being consumed.

Back when water purification tablets hadn't beeninvented, campers and soldiers
out in the wild used to boil water beforedrinking it – then, it was common for
them to shake it vigorously, with a spoonor a stick, to bring it back  part of
the gases that are lost when boiling it and make it easier todrink.

This makes me thinkthat sometimes gas is added (CO2)to flavor the water.

Boiling water decreases its ability todissolve certain gases, and this often
results in an unpleasant taste. However, I think there may also beanother
factor at play: boiling water decreases its “hardness,” meaning that
dissolvedbicarbonates turn into carbonates andCO2:

(HCO3)2−1⇒CO3−2+CO2 (gases escape)

As bicarbonates are much more soluble thancarbonates, the latter precipitate
and the amount of dissolved salts decreases, which reduces the charge of ions in
the water and causes the taste to change.

My note- A good answer. I am not able torecollect  whether boiled water
tasteddifferent from normal water. Now for decades I use ROS water  and taste
difference is not felt.

Q10              Which country has the worstgeographical disadvantage?

A10       Utku Özver, Studied at BogaziciUniversity Updated 4y

The winner is Uzbekistan

It is one of thetwo double-landlocked countries in the world ( landlocked by
landlockedcountries that are Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan,
Tajikistan,Kyrgyzystan).

80% of its area comprises deserts. Remaining areas aremostly mountains.

Very limited source of water.

The country is inthe earthquake zone. Huge earthquakes happened in the past.

Climate of thecountry makes life too difficult. The average temperature in
summer 40 °C. However, inwinter it is -2 °C. Sometimes -40 °C is seen in that
season.
