BEING  A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1           Isit safe to mix purified and distilled water together?

A1           Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

Purified water and distilledwater are different. Distilled water by hot process
is not FIT for drinking. Itis used in manufacturing batteries, topping up
batteries etc.

Purified water isprepared by cold process and fit to drink. Whateverthe purpose
both should not be mixed and used.

Q2           Whatwas the dirtiest country you ever visited?

A2           jali Shah, Physiotherapy Doctor atApollo Hospitals (2016–present)
Sep 22

What do you thinkthis is a photo of?

Looks like housesin a slum, right? And it should be the dumping ground.Believe
it or not, it is a river.

If you look closely, you can see thatthe garbage is floating on the water. It
is the Pasig Riverin the Philippines. Pasig, the largest lake in the
Philippines, flowsapproximately 25 kilometers (16 mi) from Manila Bay to Lagun
de Bay.

The problem is thatit crosses the most populous city on the planet, Manila, and
as a result, it has become a local dumpingground. After World War II, when the
city's population exploded, the river wasused to dump factory waste, household
waste, sewage and just about anything youcan think of. In the 1990s, Pasig was
consideredbiologically dead, meaning it could no longer support any aquatic
life due tolow levels of oxygen.

But our story doesnot end here.

The image on the right is the Pasig River today. Since2008, the Asian
Development Bank and the Filipino government took an initiativeto rehabilitate
the river. The program required bringingtogether the people of the city,
various government agencies and environmentalexperts.

Filipinosthemselves had run out in numbers, not even expecting to see AfDB and
slowly, the Dead River began to return tolife. Last year, the river won the
Asian River Award for its "beauty"and "utility".

Pasig River won the first prize Asia River prise. That's all I know

respect torecent floods in Kerala homes. There is no brick powder(surki) laying
and tiles providing over RCC roof in Kerala. Some have startedTamilnadu
procedure in Kerala

Renovating  concrete floor to Tiles/ marbles/ granite.

Interior changes inkitchen and rooms

Outdoor tiling orconcreting around home.

Renovating old typetoilets to modern type and providing septic tank in place of
pit

Q4           Whatis the maximum number of tickets that can be booked under the
ladies' quota ofIndian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)?

A4           Rahul Kapoor,Lives in New Delhi(2012–present)20h

The ladies quotaare available in most of the trains. Maximum six seats
areallocated under this quota in SL class, and also fewer berths in AC
coaches.. But, it’s meant forsingle travelling woman or a woman with a child of
<12 years age. Group ofladies (only) can also book under this quota. To my
knowledge, there is nodefined limit of the maximum booking as long as berths
would be available whichgo fast.

Q5           Howmuch do you pay for your maid in India?

A5           Monisha Srivastava, INDIAN OUTLOOK ISCHANGING Sep 30

I stay in NewDelhi. I have two domestic help at home.

One is for doing top work like mopping, cleaning theutensils and washing cloths.
She comes once in a day. Shetakes about 5 to 6 days a leave. We stay in 1bhk.

I give her Rs 3000pm, with annual increment of 10%.Sheis free to take anything
she needs and is very supportive and understanding.

For cooking, meals twice a day for a family of two, I payher Rs 6000. She cooks
really well and neverhesitates from doing extra work. She takes 6 day leaves.
Usually annualincrement is 10% but I raised her wages within 06 months. So my
total spent onmaid is Rs 9000pm

My note- In Chennai, servants are paid bonus  for Pongal/ Deepavalione month’s
salary. 85%  are not employedfor cooking.

Most are hesistant to clean outside the homeand front of home. They feel it is
Muncipality duty.  Though they may use toilet, toilet cleaning doesnot come
under the duty.

In Bangalore I haveobserved they are used for cooking. They clean dining table,
and clean one toiletper day.

In Chennai andBangalore they take off 4-5 days together. In Bangalore their
availability ismore.

Increment is above 30%once in 2 years or so in Chennai. Because of scarcity
servants are paid more whether affordable ornot. Our servant lady comes by
morning 6.45 AM, finishes work by 8 AM atthe most. Cleaning vessels, kitchen,
work area to certain extent, all rooms. Once a while she will clean outsideif I
ask her and specially paid. She is paid 3500-00 plus additional ifmembers are
more with more vessels to clean.

Q6           Whatdoes the best breakfast that you can purchase look like in
your city?

A6           Shaunak Bhattacharjeee, Lives inKolkata, West Bengal, India
(1996–present)Wed

In Kolkata, there are two types of breakfast that one cantry. One is the most
popular type is with kochuri and aloo'r torkari.Kochuri is a deep-fried bread,
while there's a spicy side dish made with boiledpotatoes that accompanies it.

This lip-smackingfood is very cheap and it costs around 5 rupees per kochuri
and for 20 rupees, you can get yourstomach full.

Yes, Kolkata stillremains one of those very few cities where you can fill your
stomach for ascheap as 10–20 rupees. Kochuri torkari is not just a popular
breakfast food butis an iconic dish associated with the Bengali culture that
many visitors loveto try when they are visiting the City of Joy.

On the other hand, English breakfasts are quitepopular in Kolkata as well.
There are many restaurants and confectionery shopsthat serve English breakfast,
the most popular one being at Flury's.

You get two eggs — sunny side up, chickensausages, baked beans, baked tomato,
hash browns, bacon strips, mushrooms, fresh fruit, bread and a choice of
tea/coffee. Englishbreakfast at Flury's is quite popular in Kolkata and it
takes almost an hour inthe queue to get into the shop on Sunday mornings!

Q7           How exactly is energy produced from the reaction of glucose and
oxygen incellular respiration?

A7           Ken Saladin, Former professor ofhistology (microscopic anatomy)Tue

Those reactions don’t produce any energy at all.

The energy is alreadythere in the chemical bonds of the starting reactants like
glucose and fats. The reactions of cellularrespiration release the energy bit
by bit, tiny step by tiny step(challenging the memories of countless students
with exam anxiety). About 34% ofthat pre-existing energy is transferred to the
chemical bonds of ATP. The other66% is given off as body heat.

So where did that energy come from in the first place?Sunlight—every bit of
that chemical bond energy is from the sun.All hail Apollo! All we living
creatures do is move it around from place toplace, molecule to molecule, until
we eventually lose it all as heat and returnit to space.

Q8           Howcan I reduce electricity consumption of a computer while
running on batterypower?

A8           Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

As the computeror Laptop battery becoming old, the hours it can deliver power
reduces from 4hours to 10 minutes or still less. The best optionis replace
battery. Old model computers and Laptops consume more power. Now most use
laptops orcomputers in LAN in big offices.

2nd option ispurchase a new laptop. Depend on your use, Laptops areavailable
from Rs 30000–00 to 1.5 Lakhs in Chennai, India.

I use a laptop costing 32000–00 ACER make.I use laptop keeping on table and AC
power connected, so that battery can beused when power failures and emergency
work is there.

Q9           Whathappens if I don't consume salt for 10 days?

A9           Laura Bailey,Get Fit. Get Healthy.Get Results! 23h

If you don'tconsume salt for 10 days, you may experience some side effects such
as fatigue,headache, and dehydration.

Your body needssalt to function properly, and without it, you may not be able
to perform atyour best.

If you'replanning on doing a salt-free diet, make sure to speak with your
doctor first to make sureit's safe for you.

Q10         Cantwo different species produce offspring that can reproduce and
survive as itsown unique species?

A10         Claire Jordan,Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper Wed

Occasionally, yes, since “species” isa rather arbitrary term. When this happens
in nature the new, mixed group iscalled a hybrid swarm.

We’ve seen thisrecently in Darwin’sfamous Galapagos finches. A male of one
species got blown to the wrong islandand mated with two females of another
species, producing three hybrid clutches. The hybrids probably *could* breed
with the parent species, but they don’t, because they have their own different
mating cry, so the descendantsof those three clutches have become a new species
nicknamed the Big Bird finch.
